Sounds dandy. In the meantime, a second battery that I can swap quickly will probably be the cheaper alternative whenever this drops (thankfully, my laptop restarts back to where it was rather quickly when batteries are swapped).

In actuality the laptop makers will start selling batteries 1/8th the size at the same cost as the current gen batteries. You'll be able to get one that maybe, "maybe" doubles the battery life but it will cost more then 2x the regular battery.

Too bad we will never see this on old laptops like UBER batteries that we can use to upgrade our old laptops with. A 48 cell equivalent would be more than welcome for me. Actually I doubt we will see this in use anytime soon... What happened to the quick charge toshiba batteries?

We already have laptops that can last a coast-to-coast trip and still have juice left to go. The benefit will be smaller size with that battery life. Our sales guys (who are traveling 4 days a week) love the HP 2710's with extended battery slices that we outfitted them with. They are always commenting on how long they last.

It has been known for a long time that Silicon can absorb a lot more Lithium ions than current cathode materials. This claim of 8x is not unrealistic. The reason Silicon is not used today is because it expands as it absorbs Lithium ions, bloats up like a balloon. If they have overcome this mechanical challenge, then we are in for new era in battery life. Bring it on!

I really need one of these, my laptop will only survive about 4 minutes when unplugged from the outlet. I mean the damn thing is about 5 years old and it is still running XP. 1.4ghz processor, 1 1/2 Gbs or ram and a 64mb AMD radeon Express 200m video card. not the greatest Latptop but still running like a champ.

All batteries have cathode materials, otherwsie they don't work, and further It's the anode that they are changing, not the cathode. Silicon anodes have many problems to address before being commercialized, for example the will expand in size a few hundred percent. So you have ot start with a smaller battery, and it also leads to the batteriesd degrading much quicker. So maybe you get more runtime, but you have to replace your battery more often.
