Netflix Watch Instantly for Mac Now Live (for Beta Users)
Posted by Jack Loftus at 6:30 AM on November 3, 2008
As we reported last Sunday, Netflix Watch Instantly was "coming soon" for Mac users. Well, coming soon is today, dear readers. If you're into being a beta user, head over to Netflix to opt in at the sign in page, and give her a try. Of course, there are a few things to understand before you start streaming. You'll need to download Microsoft's Silverlight; and Netflix is imposing a six machine limit (PC, set top, whatever). Additionally, not all movies are available for viewing through the Silverlight player. Still cool though. Bye-bye DVDs?[Venture Beat]

Scratch that....there is just an extra period on the end of the link that needs to be cleaned up. Thanks for the tip!

Only issue I've had is fullscreen not working and resolution feels a little iffy sometimes. Great for catching up on documentaries (best part of the catalog at this point) and TV shows.

I used it yesterday, the install didn't even require me to restart my browsers to install the MS Silverlight plugin!
Microsoft, impressed I am.
I love you Netflix. Oh, and evenone should watch Falling Down, for free, on netflix streaming!

Macs ARE PC's :^)
I'm impressed with Silverlight too. Some of my developer friends think it's better to work with than Adobe Flash. Hopefully they'll have more titles in soon.

The link has a period inserted at the end of it, just remove the period and reload, it will work then.

@LindsayJoy's MBP is into S+M (it takes after its mistress): I had to restart my browser to use the plugin, even though it didn't force me to quit while it installed.

@Tyranicus: Seems fickle, it stalled for me the first time, worked fine after that.

Netflix is doing an awesome job integrating their streaming client into set-top boxes (Tivo, Bluray players, Roku, etc.) in addition to PC's and now Macs. The selection is still inadequate, but hopefully that will change soon with their DRM changes. (Not that I'm a big DRM fan - I don't want it in music I buy, but I'm okay with it in things like movies that I'm only only going to view once.) The combination of selection, convenience, and all-you-can-eat subscription pricing will be tough to beat.

It works great -- I'm watching 30 Rock right now. This should be a pretty big boost to Silverlight's popularity.

works great, quality isn't as good as Hulu but I'm sure it will eventually, beyond Beta.
Finally!

The article makes it seem as though this beta were specifically for Mac users. This beta is actually something everyone has been looking forward to; Mac compatibility is just part of the big picture.

With this now in place is there not even more reason for me to pick up a Mac Mini while I still can vs an Apple TV?

A brilliant move by Microsoft marketing machine. They finally made me install Silverlight on my mac.
As for the Netflix bunch - I still think they are on the less bright end of the spectrum.

conveniently enough i signed up for Netflix yesterday specifically based on the upcoming Mac compatibility and the November 19th Xbox 360 compatibility.
thought for sure i'd have a few more days/weeks to go before i could try it out. nice!

I'm loving this. When they said a Beta would be coming soon, I had no idea it would be this quickly. It looks really good. I had Silverlight installed earlier for the Olympic broadcasts they had on NBC. I'm sold.
Now if I could only find a way to hook it up to one of my components hooked up to my projector. PS3, Apple TV, or DVR. Any suggestions?

@x23:
You just called me a "sick asshole".
What is wrong with you? I am American too.
So you just described me an non-American sick asshole for a netflix Mac plug-in post that was nice and informed for no reason.
I don't think I've ever seriously asked for this, but can someone please ban this guy?

I just tried it and for me the IQ with the old Netflix streaming worked much better than the beta. I tried it using both Firefox on my Mac and IE using VMware and XP also on my Mac and the image is much more pixelated and jumpy than it was before.
I would not suggest using the beta unless that is the only way you can use the service, even using the old system on my Mac via VWware was much better- SD DVD quality in my case. Once you opt for using the beta you can't go back to the old service on any machine with your account. I'm sure the quality will improve, but I'm bummed I tried the beta now. I do look forward to using my Tivo HD when that goes online- should be very convenient.

@x23: Well, I'll tell ya what D-FENS would do, he'd probably shoot up in the air and watch you lay a turd in your dweeby slacks and not bother to call anyone an asshole for no reason. These sorts of unprovoked shenanigans sort of pisses all over the comments thread, so whydoncha buck up n' be nice cupcake.

@x23: @x23: Improper attitude guy. I'm looking at this and racking my brain wondering whether you hate dominatrix gear or have a personal vendetta against Michael Douglas and/or the movie Falling Down. Just ask yourself this one important question:
What would D-FENS do?

@Kaiser-Machead's Cookie-Powered LEGO Machine: I don't think it's the Dominatrix gear he has a problem with, I think it's something else. Then again, could be the plot of the movie Falling Down, who knows.
