Netflix No Longer Selling Used DVDs
Posted by Sean Fallon at 1:30 AM on November 5, 2008
Netflix has decided to discontinue the sale of used DVDs through their website in order to focus on their core rental business. Starting on November 30th, all of their previously viewed overstock will be passed to a wholesaler—effectively adding a middleman. I suppose it doesn't seem to make much sense, but selling all of this overstock to a wholesaler greatly simplifies the distribution process (and might even save the company a bit of money as well). Plus, Netflix has been looking towards the future lately by putting a great deal of effort into their "Watch Instantly" program (TiVo, Xbox, Roku and Macs to name a few). [CNET via Electronic House]

Well, I never used it, but I certainly am sad to see it go.

I am going to complain the them, and I may even cancel. Only the fact that I have a 360 at home will keep me hanging on a while. Gotta see if that streaming option works well...

I've been considering getting Netflix for a long time. If they make a PS3 app, I may have to sign up. I don't see that happening though since Sony is renting movies through the Playstation store.

I <3 you Netflix. Forget those cheapskates who want used DVD's. Your rental service is the bees' knees.

@Andyr2120: seriously? you are considering cancelling because a RENTAL firm won't sell you their used overstock? WFT is up with that? sensitive much?

Maybe because those discs barely work when you rent them.

This does not seem like it makes much business sense as they already have a system for billing and shipping of disks.
The large movie houses have been gunning for DVD resale for a while now. I wouldn't be surprised if the streaming TV licenses and agreements required the DVD resale business as a sacrificial lamb. You can have access to the Starz network provided you no longer resell your DVDs.
Oh well. I'll just buy my used DVDs from someone else.

I haven't bought a DVD, used or otherwise, since I signed up with Netflix. Why clutter my shelves when they'll store them and send them to me whenever I want?
In the last couple of months I've been using the "Watch Instantly" feature more and more. My Queue has sort of gone ignored for a while because I watch so much stuff on line. Especially TV shows!
