Nano Silver May Be Envionment's Silver Bullet
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:00 AM on November 14, 2008
The UK's Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution has recently released a report urging for more study of nano-engineered materials, warning that there is a "major gap" in our knowledge of this technology. We've covered the potential dangers of carbon nanotubes here before, but the commission also warns about nano silver, an antibacterial particle that can be found in a variety of clothing, like socks. And in fact, the commission Chair refuses to wear such clothing at all:
I wouldn't recommend nanosilver clothes and I wouldn't wear them myself. At the moment the concentrations are way below anything likely to do damage, but if it became common, it could lead to problems.
The big problems could be not just on your body directly, but what happens if the silver leaves the clothing during wash cycles. If the nano silver leaks into our water supply, it could kill good bacteria we need for purification, let alone create havoc through unpredicted effects.
The commission would like to see full disclosure of nanomaterials in manufacturing become mandatory, but they warn it could be 20 years before we have enough data to deem many of these materials safe or hazardous. [BBC via Treehugger]

Yeah. Our son was born with golden staphylococcus in his spinal fluid. When he was better, I asked the consultant if we had to avoid bacteria. No, just the opposite. Expose, expose, expose.

and that is why we have successive generations maturing without properly developed immune systems.
The middle classes could be wiped out within 60 years by paranoid, over-indulgent 'yummy-mummys' deluging everything their child comes into contact with, under an assault of anti-bacterial wipes and /or gel.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but would nano silver really kill all these things? If I flush a gallon of bleach down my septic tank, yeah, the bacteria will take a hit, but they grow back. I know the sea contains a lot of dissolved gold, does it not also contain silver? If silver is so bad, wouldn't ship wrecks carrying silver coins be easy to spot by the dead zone around them?

@SewerShark: So what, do you pal around with bacteria or something? If ideas like yours take hold, then the bacteria wins! We can not afford to stop fighting bacteria now! This would be seen as a weakness and a cowardly loss and soon even more bacteria would spread all over!
My first step is to rename Bactria to Freedomia, because it sounds too much like Bacteria. I also renamed Lactobacillus to Lactoawesomeforyou, until I realized it was bacteria, and now I'm campaigning to end the production of all yogurts.
We must stand strong against the bacteria!

The early work with nanotechnology reminds me of early work with radioactivity, you know, like when Marie Curie was handling radium with her bare hands. (Her old workbooks are still considered too dangerous to handle without protection.)

Unless you are hiking for a long period and have to re-use socks I don't see how this is good for everyday situations. Take away too much bacteria and it leaves you susceptible to more diseases.

@flaxseed: i bought some hanes socks not too long ago that advertised this material on the package. after wearing most of them out, i decided i prefer regular hanes over these because these are thicker and i feel like my feet sweat more in them...which one would think would be a perfect breeding ground for the bacteria they claim to reduce. counterproduction!

@MobileMilitia: The silver socks more than likely didn't hold onto the sweat like the thicker socks, which is actually better. If it's holding onto the sweat, that sweat is not evaporating, thus not cooling your feet, but also keeps your feet moist, which can lead to fungal growth.

@Git Em SteveDave loves this guy-->: But Nano particles NEVER break down by natural methods. Chlorine or the like eventually waters down, breaks down and stops becoming effective. Nano silver might dilute a bit but will continue to kill bacteria and things it contacts FOREVER. That's the real issue. Plus even trying to contain a "spill" of this stuff.

The Commission Chair noted: "At the moment the concentrations are way below anything likely to do damage, but if it became common, it could lead to problems." Note the words "if" and "could." One signals a precondition; the other signals a possible consequence of the precondition being met (i.e., you don't get to the second unless you get over the first). Even if the concentration of silver nano-silver at [INSERT LOCATION] were to become substantial, consider the fact that bacteria multiply at relatively large rates. It's true, more studies are warranted, but let's not panic.

@SuperMacGuy: Chlorine would break down to chlorine, wouldn't it, since Chlorine is a element. As for silver, it kills whatever it contacts? Then wouldn't these socks, or the thermal shirt I own with silver in it, kill tissue and turn it necrotic. In all the time I have worn mine, as well as washed it, it hasn't killed my skin or my septic tank. We had it pumped about a month ago for maintenance, and everything was OK. What about the shipwreck problem?

The consequences of inaction in this crisis could be so severe that we dare not take a "wait and see" attitude. The lack of evidence should not prevent us from taking drastic action. I propose an immediate "cap and trade" tax program for nano-silver products.
In other words, if I don't wear silver socks, and your feet stink, you can send me a dollar and ruin the environment without guilt. I will spend the dollar on nano-silver offsets. (Minus, of course, expenses, shipping and handling, etc. On second thought, better make it $5.)
I'm Al Gore and I disprove this message.
