Mobile Phone Concept Has a Sweet Looking Glass
Posted by Sean Fallon at 10:00 AM on November 21, 2008
This isn't the first mobile phone concept to incorporate glass, but I'll be dammed if it isn't one of the prettiest. There aren't any details on functionality, but it is clear that designer Mac Funamizu's "Glassy Glassy" concept takes minimalist design about as far as it can go without ditching the physical phone altogether and implanting communication devices directly into our brain.

That'd be beautiful...behind a glass window.
As a phone it'd be one big greasy fingerprint smear.

Too much crap around the edges.
I'm going to take a photo of a single pane of cut glass, slap on a keypad overlay and call it a cell phone concept.
It'll sell meeeeeellllioons!

Any device that's advanced enough to work in a shard of glass would've also outgrown a 20th c. GUI. If you call your mom on a glassy cellphone from the future, I doubt it's going to have those numbers and icons.

One problem is that our world is not always a monochrome shade of colour.
That device would have very poor ligibility with a real background.

the designer forgot that processors and memory are not see-through. And as soon as he/she designs conductive material that is also transparent, can he/she please let me know ASAP.
And if the phone internals fit in the hinge, then I'd rather carry just the hinge without the two pounds of glass.
Design-schmesign... Looks like a buttload of bologna to me...

I've developed a concept for a holographic phone which can project a 42 inch screen in mid air to watch movies stored on it's 300GB internal memory. It's small enough to be worn on the wrist and allows for interactive 3d video calling and has an auto-felatio button. It has a 6 year battery life too.
Sorry, but it might look nice, but if it doesn't take into account actual technical limitations of our current state of technology (battery, aerial etc) then it's not so much a concept as a prop for science fiction.
Sure is purdy though

@Nickrick2641: no
its a piece of glass. just a piece if glass
i can make a mockup thats just a piece of glass
heres my microwave concept
heres my laptop concept
heres my ebook concept
a piece of glass is not a concept
it cant possibly be real at this point
it doesnt solve any previous problems with technology
its just a piece of glass with nonexistent touch buttons

Let me guess. A Yanko Design. Surprise, surprise. Yet another concept that has no basis in reality whatsoever. Can we have a jetpack design too for the future that's also seethrough?

So all of the electronics are 100% clear and see through? That would be a bitch to put together if you can't see the pieces once you put them in the phone

If it could actually work with present-day technology, it would be absolutely beautiful as a functional. However, it can't, which makes it not only a useless concept, but actually makes it pretty ugly. Face it, if your design concept relies on technology that doesn't exist, then the artistic concept better be ASTONISHING.
Take the iPhone for an example. It's a beautiful piece of design because it's also highly functional (and I aint no fanboy, my iphone is the first and only apple product I've ever bought). But if it looked as it did as a concept that didn't have working technology behind it, it'd actually be kind of ugly.

hmmm.. where did the glass speakers, the glass antenna, glass camera, the glass wires and motherboard and all that stuff go? I wonder. It probably has glass screws on there too. He can patent the design, but I don't know if he's going to make money off of it anytime soon. The designs are sweet, but they don't factor in all the space required for the stuff that's 'non-glass'; unless they manage to fit all that into the frame.

It'd be interesting if it had some sort of video-phone tech on it. Something seems visually striking about seeing someone's face appear on a transparent screen to me.
