MIT Team Tapped to Design the Airliners of 2030
Posted by Jack Loftus at 9:50 AM on November 10, 2008
A couple of lucky ducks at genius factory MIT have been chosen by NASA to create the planes of the future. The future in this case is the year 2030, to be precise, and they'll have $US2 million with which to do it. The Seaquest DSV-inspired image above is one of the initial designs pumped out by the team, led by MIT professor Edward Greitzer. In addition to designing sleek planes that will probably never see the light of day, the team will also be studying ways to make tomorrow's big metal birds quieter, greener and more energy efficient. And MIT, let's work on *insert lame leg room joke here* too, ok? [MIT]

where are the damn planes that have wings that bend in a fashion similar to birds?
in case people dont know what i'm talking about...ther has been talk in the past of doing just what i stated above. it would still use jet engines the same as the ones we are using today, but i believe the ability for the wings to bend would make it easier to fly and a little greener.

OMG thank god someone else watched seaquest dsv, i was starting to think i was the only one besides the shows actors and directors to know of it.
That plane looks too normal to warrant the investment and risk of a new design. It reminds me of when I reorganized my room and afterward noticed it was the same but rotated 45 degrees to the right. You can /= you should.

I think BAE and Aerospatiale are going to make a Concorde replacement which will guarantee Wows from everyone on this planet .... I do not know about NASA and MIT - They have not even been able to make a plane superior to the Eurofighter Typhoon.
Wait the upcoming F-35 has a British Design by BAE - Awesome.......

NASA and MIT couldn't, but Dassault did :)
Then again I am being partial, I saw the Rafale being put together and was in awe of the wing design and the amount of pieces that go into such a small airframe.

It is still being researched, but blended wing craft don't have a stabilizer fin, and there is also the lack of window seating. Would you like to be cooped up in economy class with the 30 other people in a single row?@DisposableInterloper:

I don't care much for window or center seats. What a BWB design could offer are way more leg room and isle seats, which ar fine by me.

OK, you know what I find interesting. The Rep. are reciting line and verse the same rhetoric they have heard on some red-neck radio talk show. I am sick of this. LISTEN to Obama, make an educated decision about his policies when you SEE his policies. DON'T assume the Democrat will act as other Democrats before him, don't ASSUME socialism until you see it, stop spreading diversity when to accomplish these wide ranging goals as a nation we need unity. OR, just watch your TV, peck on your computer, puke hate out into the world, take sides, and fight for blind ignorance. I f%&king gave five f%&king years of my life dedicated to Iraq and bringing EVERY one of my boys home safe, MY country is better than this, OUR country needs a change! We have to change and adapt, of we will perish from the face of this planet as a nation.

I'd rather have engineers desinging them to be efficient, safe, and green. The last thing I want to see is another design by some concept artist (let me guess, it would be glossy and would have LEDs underneath the surface, see image below).

Am I missing something, or does "greener" and "more energy efficient" have the same meaning in this case?
Will these new planes be lighter and have less mass?

Having just flown on the uber-discount airline of the week, I have to wonder why no one has invented an air craft where all the passengers can be loaded and off-loaded in place. As in, nix the lines to board and deplane.
And yes, Seaquest DSV was perhaps the most underrated show ever. I mean, talking dolphin? Awesome. Shame it jumped the shark, or rather the field in Idaho, in this case.

@Anarian: It's not still being researched. The decision was made as soon as a tube fuselage wasn't shown to the board members. When Boeing lost the contest to build the F-35, it wasn't due to poor engineering, it was because it "looked less like a plane should."
It's just like Dubya science - let's take the results that back up our beliefs!

I would hope they know about peak oil. You would be surprised at the number of people who are unaware of peak oil, including academics. My comment was pretty sarcastic, I know it doesn't come across in text. The IEA is predicting a 9.1% drop in production in 2009. The $2 million could be much better spent. NASA and MIT employ many great minds who I'm sure could do wonders. We should be throwing everything we have at redesigning society (especially suburban America) and developing alternative energies. Not design pretty planes that will never see production.

@OddManOut: You may indeed see straighter wings on the airliners of the future.
Yes, they will cruise a bit slower (Mach 0.77 vs. 0.85) to save on wave drag, but the ability to design for significant regions of laminar flow is much more straight-forward on a 2-D (unswept) wing than it is on a swept wing. With a laminar flow wing, overall drag savings can be astoundingly large (25% of total drag). This wildly improves fuel consumption.
