Mgestyk Gesture Control System Will Make Your Mouse and Keyboard Obsolete
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 AM on November 7, 2008
We've seen gesture controls in gadgets before, but Mgestyk Technologies wants to bring them to your home PC. Using only a 3D camera and proprietary software, the Mgestyk gesture control system is able to capture small hand movements and translate them into commands. These commands can be applied to almost any windows application, including video games. Judging from the clips they have on their site, the system seems to work as advertised, though there does appear to be a little lag. Pricing is expected to be within the range of a high end webcam which by our estimates is around $US150. At the moment there are no details about when this will be available, but you can sign up on their mailing list to get an update when it releases. [Mgestyk via Engadget]

yeah, ok, but how are you gonna watch porn? I mean, your screen would be going crazy.
Unless there is a "masturbation mode". Then right on.

"A little lag"? In a shooter you could be killed twice before your actions are translated into the game... It looks kinda neat, but I don't see this making the mouse and keyboard obsolete.. yet.

This is way sick, but i would probably use it in addition to mouse/keyboard/tablet/etc. rather than in place of.
I don't really understand everyone's beef with having buttons and keys...

Interesting...
Now type me a 20 page essay. Without the keyboard.
But in all seriousness... this would probably be nice for presentations... and maybe as a remote control replacement, IF it works well at a distance.
As far as I see, it uses a camera and recognizes gestures.
If it's anything like any other camera software that uses recognition, it:
1. Uses considerable ammounts of resources
2. lag is innevitable
3. needs a controled environment
4. will be buggy at times
5. completely useless for fps/guitar hero, besides making a video filled with bs that had to be done 10s of times to get it right (or fake)

Total failure. The delay would make it impossible to use properly and down right unproductive.
This is no better then what we saw a few years ago. Did they actually spend money on this R&D to get absolutly no where?

Sorry, but with all of the gesture-based touch-screen mind-control nonsense coming out, is there anyone who really, genuinely thinks we'll ever get rid of solid, mechanical interfaces? I really don't see any of it going away in any of our lifetimes.

@Zodduska: Yeah it would be kinda cool for multimedia crap or REALLY casually browsing the web, but I think they are really reaching with Crysis, the delay in that flight sim was unbelievable!
I'm also wondering what kind of range that camera has, could you mount it on a tv and use it from anywhere in the room, and what if someone who "talked with their hands" came over? Would their gestures constantly be screwing with your HTPC's controls?
Color me far from convinced.

Producing the most output with the least input... I don't know how this is even productive.

Holding your hands up so long is going to be an agony.
With the Wii controllers you can let your arms rest on your legs. Impossible with this crap.
Also look at the way they steer, doesn't seem to be possible to make subtle turns, they only make big short movements for that.

Remember every complain about the Wii? Welll, they were all proven to be untrue because Nintendo is not insane. This company, however, inherits all of those complaints and then some. This idea, while not terrible, could never be mainstream. It's just ineffective and inefficient. Also... kinda need to be able to type. Plus, can't wait to see how leaning back in your chair switches the open window. I'll stick with what's proven.

Eliminate the lag, figure out some way of giving feedback, and I might eventually want to use this, but I'd def have to set up surround sound and a larger screen to do it.

It looks like it has potential but i honestly couldn't imagine gaming with just this, but using it to activate a mic or pause the game would be cool especially if you could use expressions instead of holding up your hand. Imagine this; instead of pressing a button you wink to activate the mic, or you stick out your tongue to pause the game.

i know what will eventually replace this technology: a small hand held device that sits on your desk. you move it about an inch and accomplish the same thing as flailing your arms about.

yeah making gestures at my screen, with emphasis at the prolonged periods of time i spend in front of the screen...
now moving stuff around with your thoughts, that's something we could all enjoy. no more moving around, your muscles are tired and the last thing you need is a mouse and a keyboard, exhausting the little energy you have left.
