Using mac os 10.3.9 I trialled Twonky Media. had no problems streaming from external HD to PS3, 360, networked machines and wirelessly to mobile phones etc... good piece of software. Although the current Aus exchange rate is preventing me from purchasing the app which is priced in Euros. Seemed to work exceptionally well. Browser based also.

I don't see why both Xbox 360 and PS3 have both gone the UPnP road - it's overcomplicating the issue. Why not just have a SMB share and pull the files off that?
Hell, you don't even need to install anything on Windows box to do this, and setup on linux (not sure about mac, but can't be too difficult, after all it's supposed to be the easy operating system) is braindeadly simple. Add to that the fact that the system has been around for ages, so you're not relying on buggy implementations of an emerging protocol and I think we have a winner.
Xbox Media Centre for the original Xbox did a fantastic job of this... if only the software ran on the 360 or PS3.
Just another reason my glorified Pentium 3 is yet to be replaced.
