You Are Not Rich, Sophisticated, or Handsome Enough to Own the Tag Heuer Meridiist Phone
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 3:00 AM on October 5, 2008
Watchmaker Tag Heuer has put up a teaser video for their forthcoming Meridiist phone, and boy is it a slap in the face to everyday Joe Sixpacks like you and me.
The phone isn't really, as one suit in the video notes, "A very nice... a very nice PIECE OF ART," but when the big innovation is bringing the stunning features of wristwatches to mobile phones (that's right, the Meridiist has a built-in clock!), you can't blame them for reaching a bit. The phone's selling points: made from the finest rubber (?) and alligator skin, creating a "sensual experience," and to top it off, it is "in some way the first pocket watch of the 21st century!" Never mind that it looks like the obese offspring of my first Nokia candybar from 1998 and an HTC Touch Diamond, conceived in a French executive's board room— it's expensive and so you must want one. [Thanks, Nebosja!]

What a load of rubbish. I mean, did the Vertu really sell that much? Or that ridiculous B&O phone? I know a 'sophisticated rich' dude who owned one and dumoed that sucker with three months in favour of an iPhone. I can't believe these companies haven't figured it out: This is a market best left for the big dogs. End of story.

Mercedes and BMW offer better technology and performance than your average Toyota or Ford. But luxury watches (and luxury cell phones) are all image, packaging and hype. I stay away from Rolex, Omega, Tag Heuer and their ilk because they're the ultimate poser hardware. Anyone wearing one might as well stamp "narcissist" on his forehead.

I think luxury brands should go for rebranding current tech like D&G did with the razr. That way they get the best tech and can add their own flare/luxury with unique paint, cases, headsets, etc. too much r&d is wasted on a luxury company trying to make their own phone -- and the results are never good.
do you remember the b&o phone -- yikes!

The sad truth is: Yes, there are people who will buy that piece of crap phone, and YES, they will buy it because of this teaser alone.
Rich people who doesn't know crap about cellphones or technology, that will mostly use the cellphone to receive calls and only that, and are only interested in status.
Because you know, they don't need resources on their cellphones... they already got some sexy polyglot model to do whatever they need.

Idk.. you want a good watch - you pay for the movement inside and unlimited service to fix the watch - you spend the 5+ thousand on a rolex not just for the name, but knowing its going to be a watch that lasts long after your in your grave.

I think the selling point isnt really that appealing.
I mean i was gonna think this thing told you your heartbeat while running a marathon or how far away the next cop is while you're on the Route4 high way.
Calculate the elevation of your private helicopter or the next luxury bathroom....
Bull shxt i wouldn't buy this even if i was richer than bill gates. No point in buying a dam watch for a phone. Especially if its gonna be the size of two snickers bars side by side. I'd rather get a HTC Pro and enjoy spending the 800dollars to get it unlocked and ready to salsa.
