Xohm's WiMax Coverage Quietly Live and Working in Six More Cities
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:15 AM on October 7, 2008
We saw Sprint/Clearwire/whoever's Xohm WiMax tested in B-more with speedy results. And now, news from a Xohm employee in Baltimore is that the service is also live and working (albeit in an "unsupported" test capacity) in Chicago, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and northern Virginia. So anyone with WiMax-enabled hardware in those cities, let us know if you're picking up any sweet 3 mbps pipe out there. [MP3Car]

I don't get it... How can there possibly be something good that is unavailable in NYC? Unacceptable.

It is working awesome in the Northern Virginia region outside of Washington DC. I am pulling 7mbps down from a server in New York!

If this pans out, a Nokia Xohm-enabled N810 will be the device to own.

@adamator: Imagine the infrastructure that will me needed in the big markets like NYC. I's surprised they didn't start off in small markets like Aspen or Lake Tahoe or some other small town with rich people willing pay for the service and to be guinea pigs for the new tech.

Looks like Sprint has gotten wise to this work-around of entering a Baltimore address. I'm in Washington DC area and have decent XOHM coverage but cannot get connected. I have my account activated and all but am jailed inside the XOHM.com domain. Meaning I can't connect to anything outside of their domain. Grrr

Well, I got good news. Just got home from work and I got access. So I'm not sure if it just took a long time to process my activation request or if the system just doesn't do address verification that often. Most likely one of those two things. I don't think it was specific to my area as I've heard from someone else on another site that was connected and browsing here in DC yesterday evening.

@reddingofish: If they could do it in Boston or Baltimore, they could do it in Manhattan. The island is tiny. The whole point of WiMax is that it needs very little infrastructure. GIMME MY INVISIBLE INTERNETS TUBES!
