Worldwide LHC Computing Grid Online, Just in Time for LHC to Go Down
Posted by Mark Wilson at 12:00 AM on October 7, 2008
Well, the LHC may be out of commission until April, but the LHC Computing Grid, otherwise known as the world's largest computing grid, was just switched on. The system is comprised of combined computing power from 33 countries. That's 140 computer centres crunching 15 million gigabytes of LHC data per year (or roughly six CDs/second at its peak).
The network uses fibre optic transmission to send information to 11 primary data centres in Europe, North America and Asia. From these centres, the data is passed to 140 secondary centres globally.
The processing architecture not only distributes the heavy processing load to computers across the world, but it allows 7,000 scientists to share access to LHC data, to sift through the mountains of information for a nugget of valuable data. And when it comes to understanding the fundamental nature of our Universe, we'll take all the eyes we can get. [China View]

Hopefully in before the Skynet jokes come rolling in.
I wish I knew more about this device so I could even comprehend what the hell 15 million gigabytes would be about.

Funny thin is, that while it is true that Germans tend to love David Hasselhoff, it's because of Knight Rider. Most Germans actually have no idea that he sang or sings or every played different roles other than Michael Knight. Knight Rider runs till this day on German TV :D P.S.: I live in Germany

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E: Its all collision data, there are something like 1 billion collisions per second at each detector, then there are 3 detectors (I think, ATLAS, CMS, and one other main one) then each of these pictures is stored and ones that look 'special' are analyzed.
Which = 15 x 1,000,000,000,000,000, apparently.

@ciscokidinsf: How much of that is dl/ed Hasselhoff MP3's? B/c studies have proven that Germans love David Hasselhoff.

Who's the dude in the upper right corner? He kinda looks like Riker. Damn those Starfleet guys and they're ability to travel through time...

How did this turn into a discussion of David Hasselhoff?
This is like the ultimate thread derailment.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: I'm just wondering why we haven't seen any more pictures of Gordon Freeman. What exactly are they trying to hide?

I was going to add the LHC to my BOINC account right before it went down. After that I figured there was no point. Speaking of BOINC is anyone having any issues with that? I'm doing SETI, Einstein, and (I think?) the Lattice Project. Only thing is SETI is the only one working. Is everything but SETI always down for repairs?!

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E: OMFG, It's Skynet!
No, really, that's an assload of data there. I'd be happy with 15 million gigs of storage.
Then again, I would have no idea what the hell to do with that much storage space.
