Where to Watch Tonight's Presidental Debate Live Online: Hulu, VCAST and More
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 5:00 AM on October 8, 2008
Whereas a live online stream of the first presidential debate was a bit harder to pin down, our pick for tonight's at 9PM Eastern is Hulu. Its live stream of the final two presidential debates is actually Hulu's first ever live broadcast, which is something they might do more of following the debates. (Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it'll be in HD.) But there are, of course, other options.
If you're not near a TV or computer tonight Verizon's VCAST service will be streaming CBS's feed live. Of course, there are streams from CBS's regular site, CNN and C-SPAN, who has probably the best and most forward-thinking—for Web 2.0 fanatics anyway—online coverage around. Hulu's Election '08 hub also aggregates everything from speeches to punditry to funnies from The Daily Show, Colbert, Conan and more if you want to flip something more engaging during a particularly snoozy stretch of the debate. Or if your politics appetite is just insatiable, there's Obama's maybe game-changing iPhone app if you want to put your fingers in your ears whenever McCain speaks.
Where else are you guys planning to peep the debate? [paid content]

Dugg down as irrelevant.
FiveThiryEight shows polling numbers strongly in favor of Sen. Obama with a projected 345 electoral votes and InTrade shows an even wider margin.
Unless Sen. Obama invites Rev. Jeremiah Wright on stage to cook crippled babies over a fire of burning flags and Bibles, the race is over.

I've been watching the debates on CNN.com. They also show a lot of campaign rallies during the day. I actually watch live streaming video on CNN all day at work in a small window in the top right of my screen and people that come into my sop are often amazed and intrigued by it.
However this HULU broadcast looks good too, as I'm a big HULU fan.

The sad truth is the Obama and his ACORN folks are at the root of the current economic collapse. Over decades, constantly hounding the lenders via lobbying in the federal government, ala Sen.'s Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd, bullying and finally compelling lenders to offer for high-risk loans to low-income, risky borrowers. The rest is before you today. McCain and then Pres. Clinton, (Bill) wanted reform and regulation back in Clinton's terms but the Democratic party flatly rejected it. The irony is voters are blaming McCain due to the simply party affiliation. So much for the informed American voter.

@ripfire: Because he figured he could get Hillary voters and Christian Conservatives in one fell swoop. He failed to realize that a pro-Hillary Christian Conservative is a fictional animal.
He would have been far better served by selecting Gov. Huckabee who tied for second in the Republican primary, is unassailable on family values, appeals to Christian conservatives, is extremely affable and carries numerous Midwest States.
Instead, by choosing Gov. Palin, McCain sacrificed the "experience" card, alienated moderate voters who agree with McCain's economic and foreign policies but detest Gov. Palin's social policies, and made an issue out of his own judgment.
On top of that, a sentence that he wrote when he thought his Presidential hopes were over came back to haunt him:
"I make [decisions] as quickly as I can, quicker than the other fellow, if I can. Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint."
It was repeated enough throughout the blogosphere and even the mainstream media through September in connection with the Palin pick, that the "risky" candidate is now McCain.
Sen. McCain's fighter pilot instincts may be good in the short term but history shows that there they do not give him the ability to plan for the long term. Gov. Palin was a quick fix and shows that he does not act - he reacts. That's not leadership.

Only to go back two days later with no reform in sight. After the bailout plan was approved, the stock market and economic indicators have shown nothing but a shitstorm for coming year.

Zogby (generally the most accurate) had it today at just a 2.6% (rounded to 3) lead for Obama which is a statistical tie. Races usually tighten up toward the end, and you also have the "Bradley Effect" to consider. It is bound to come out eventually that the people responsible for a good bit of our recent economic woes are now working for Obama, or are at least Democrats. I'd love to say otherwise, but right now, it is too close to call, IMHO.

OK, Obama isn't helping his case of stop the finger-pointing he mentioned earlier in the debate, and yet he continues to finger-point. Although, some of it is justified to shut McCain up when its deserved.

I think McCain did a bit better here, but we heard nothing new on either side, and all either one did was shore up their decided voter base...

@GadgetPlay: I'm more concerned about "The Diebold effect", y'know the one.

Is not watching this thing in HD really a huge bummer? I mean, we all like to eake out full value from the old panel... but really, McCain in high-def ain't pretty for anyone.
Actually... that is a reason to do it, so that 'maverick' has more chance of getting his butt kicked into a deserving loss. Since this (well, his, espcially) campaign seems to be more about appearances than substance. The only real threat he presents, besides ignorami who don't condone birth control (damn those extra voters!), is in Palin. And if that's a convincing turning point in anyone's opinion or vote, well - I know we're pretty screwed already, but that'd just take the cake.

@GadgetPlay: Zogby's data is more than a week old. Go to FiveThirtyEight.com. Nate Silver aggregates the polls from all the major agencies. The vast majority of State and nationwide polling data has been pro-Obama for over a week now.

@GadgetPlay: The polls in general are showing a increased lead for "the Obamanator"...but will it last? Who knows. I wonder if the world economy will even exist by Nov. 4th! Screw the election, head for the hills!

@Rabid Penguin: Try all of them.

Give that a read before you read any more chain emails. FYI: I don't blame the McCain campaign for these emails. They usually originate from some pretty slimy sources. Both campaigns use some wild exaggerations, but these chain mails are almost always completely full of lies.

@johnnyabnormal: Are you saying Obama has no association with known domestic terrorist Bill Ayers? Why does Obama have sooo many known questionable associations? Of course Obama is going to try to distance himself from these people... but he's trying to run for president. Are you trying to tell me that Obama's crazy pastor never spewed his hate filled bigotry in the 20 years that Obama attended? Pretty much everything he said (in his "chain letter") is pretty accurate.
Our country is so screwed. I don't want to be socialist.
