Unlikely Rumour Says Microsoft Contracting Toshiba Venture For Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Drive
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 3:00 PM on October 10, 2008
Despite Microsoft denying any plans to develop a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360 at least a million times now, rumours are surfacing that the company's already made one and just needs to decide on a release date. If X-bit Labs is to be believed, a joint-venture between Toshiba and Samsung has been contracted to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Microsoft's game console. According to their market sources, the company is aiming at a $US100 to $US150 price point in order to compete with the PlayStation 3.
Really... Toshiba? That should already tip this off to be unreliable, considering Toshiba still hasn't stopped licking its wounds from its devastating loss in the format war. While the manufacturer being a joint venture makes it slightly more credulous, it's still hard to swallow. [X-bit Labs]

I think they're about a year too late for this. I would hope they would include it in the next gen xbox, but I can't see anyone buying a new xbox to play bluray. Anyone that would buy a system for that already has a PS3.

I don't know, you would think if it were actually going to happen they would have ironed out all of the details to get this thing into market before the holiday gift buying rush. The xbox sure could use a boost for this christmas, especially with HDTV's one everyone's list to replace that dead analog unit.

Ok... what is this the 4th time the 'rumor' has come up and subsequently been denied... They sure have been working a really long time on it.
Just quit posting about it until Microsoft actually says they are making one. You're loosing your credibility to keep beating a dead horse.

There's no point for them to go Blu ray. Go digital Xbox you're doing a good job.

I honestly believe that it's going to happen. Usually, on going rumors like this one end up being true in the end.

@daftrok: Better start saving money on bigger hard drives if they go that route.

Yeeaa..NO!
Go digital is not the solution. At least not in this or the subsequent generation of consoles. That is unless you enjoy downloading 50GB games.

Of course they're making one. It's guaranteed. Know why? Because I'm about to buy a PS3 tomorrow just to play Blu-Ray movies. A console I don't need yet. So of course MS will be coming out with one.

I believe Microsoft will go through with making this Blu-Ray drive. They have to keep up Sony after all.

@snakepliskin:
For the 10000000th time: Sony DOES NOT own Blu-ray, nor do they control the licensing issues in any way.
Sony is just ONE of the EIGHTEEN board members of Blu-ray Disc Association.

Lol maybe the leak had Toshiba and Sony mixed up, thought Toshiba was backing blu-ray and won the format war. If so, it's the dumbest thing I've heard in a while.
