T-Mobile Launches G1 Emulator to Pass the Time until October 22nd
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 10:00 AM on October 5, 2008
If you can't wait for the T-Mobile G1's release, or just couldnt figure out if it's available or not and missed your chance to pre-order, T-Mobile has released a pretty full-featured emulator to play around with. It doesn't have everything (GPS is missing and a few functions just give an error message) but it'll give you a good taste of what's to come on October 22nd. [Cell Phone Signal via Engadget Mobile]

With the tightly integrated java apps and intent-based service registry...I really hope this takes off and isn't neutered by carriers. The gphone represents a real opportunity for developers as long as there are sufficient sales.

It gets old after a minute. Its because its an emulator made for passing the time before the device comes out that lets u pass the time on the go. Also the fact that this peticular device lacks multi touch is a huge flaw. Multi makes things like zooming in and out on photos fun. Tsk Tsk... Maybe the device the release for sprint will be multitouch.

Interesting. Makes me want an Android phone moreso than before, actually.

I wouldn't say the emulator is anywhere near "pretty full featured"... I'm not ripping on giz I just think it's worth noting that there are many functional discrepancies between this and the sdk that I noticed (buttons don't do exactly what they actually do). This is a bit of a distortion of the term 'emulator'. If you want a preview of what android will be like, better to download the SDK. It is pretty-full-featured but missing some apps and functionality. http://code.google.com/android/download.html

But i like how they used a brown one. i like the way the keyboard looks. Im also kinda glad they didn't do white. From the pictures i've seen, it makes it look cheap. But i do wish they did the red from a while back

Supposedly it CAN do multi-touch but nothing has be written for it that uses it yet.

hopefully you can change the size of the font. everything is so huge. but they probably did that to make the emulator more usable

@Spaz6to8:
Actually I think the comment by a rep was the screen can support it but they didn't write Android to support it. The reason was said to be "IP," probably has to do with Apple's patents on some specific multi-touch gestures (ie. the most intuitive pinching).
Not having multi-touch isn't a deal-breaker. There are plenty of alternatives that can replace it. So far the only really useful thing for it is zooming. Besides from that, it is pretty much useless, mostly because people haven't figured out other good gestures for it.

Alas, my laptop lacks gps, compass, accelerometer... all the things that would make this emulator fun.
If only it had come out last week. I puchased an iphone last week to pass the time until my contract is up and I can get a G1 (3-4 months). If I'm lucky Android will be ported to an iphone by then, but I won't hold my breath.

that pull-down thing from the top bar is strange. i also don't like the menu buttons and what they do. i honestly think i'd rather use my old sony ericsson w810i, which wasn't a smart phone at all. the interface just wasn't intuitive for me, and i'd like to think i'm not a complete retard.
also, it looks like you can set 3 alarms. that's pretty good since a lot of phones only allow 1 or 2...but i like how you can set as many as you want on the iphone.

That's actually pretty sweet. I wish they would do this for all new mobile devices.

Very cool G1 people, but as I have 22 months to go with the 3G it's too little too late.

@stopcrazypp: advantage of non-multitouch is that it takes only one hand instead of two.

@tkohrs2002: count on it. if it isnt look on the bright side its gonna be on sprints ev-do network as well as have a chip for their upcoming wi-max network which is probably what they'll do to make the phone seem more appealing to those people that dont really know they havent released it yet.
And if they have then boy do i need to get on giz more often

@ShawBabalon:
I'd love to try the emulator included with the SDK, but I can't get it to work. The install directions are useless to me. :/
