T-Mobile G1 Unboxed, Ready For Belt Clips Everywhere
Posted by John Herrman at 8:50 PM on October 2, 2008
Here's the first full unboxing of T-Mobile's G1 Android phone which, despite the rabid anticipation of the device, manages to be pretty boring. We're glad to see it out in the wild, but the lame carrying case and decision to include the trademark uncomfortable HTC earphones, complete with a chunky mic. But as my mother (or probably the head of marketing at T-Mobile) would say, it's what's inside that counts. [TMoNews]

I think they're trying to make the G1 unattractive on purpose so they can work out the kinks with a limited rollout, and avoid souring Android's rep if there were problems with a more compelling first phone that people bought in droves. Kind of like a public beta purposefully uglyfied to keep it limited, so it doesn't prematurely impact Android's reputation.

Wish I could play with a G1 just to get a feel for it - can you do that at T-Mobile stores like you could with the iPhone at AT&T stores?

ive played it, and it does take some time to get used to... the internet is great, but the design is just disgusting. the screen could of been a bit bigger, and they could of removed that curvature in the bottom. the keyboard needs to get used to... maybe its this blackberry that doing it to me.

I think they are forward thinking in this design. Most cell phones just get thrown out after a year or so, I think Android will be propping doors open for years to come.

What I don't get, is why include a data cable if you can't sync it to your desktop.
Is it so you can charge your phone from your PC?
Or, does the device show up as a removable memory on your PC and that would be the way to transfer media files to the phone?

i like how there are SO many people on giz that are bashing the g-1. but then you look at tmonews and everyone is drooling over it. LIke its been said before...Settle down all you iphucks...its all we (t-mobile) have...Sorry if the g-1 doesn't cure aids or give abortions

@Spaz6to8:
I don't really see it. I'm an Android fan, but I don't see any g1 bashing. People just have different opinions on the phone design. But this is true of all designs, it's based on subjective opinion. Don't get offended by it, just ignore it and make up your own mind.
I still say that it isn't bad when you look at it in better photos (this one looks to be the same kind of grainy cellphone photo that the original leaked version was) and it videos. Probably in person it's not bad.

@frigg:
I have seen that theory a lot. Others also point to the many input options: keyboard, trackball, touchscreen, as a device to let developers really try out their apps to the fullest.

There seems to be a big movement against the design of the G1. Personally, I don't find it to be the sexiest phone out there, but I think the criticisms are pretty harsh, especially for a piece of hardware which is almost all about driving focus towards the software, which looks rock-solid. I can't wait for mine to come...it'd be great if the UPS guy actually ring my bell for once.

I'm not gonna lie, T-Mobile hasn't had too much in the past (to my disappointment...), but this thing looks kickass. All the haters out there are macfags and those with AT&T.
I can't wait to get one.

The carrying case may look lame, but i'm using a similar one with my HTC touch and it's perfect. Lightweight, small, protective enough to survive falling lots a times (real life experience enough with that :p) and it's not flashy like most.
I used to have a really sturdy one with my Q-tek S100 with fugly belt clip [www.datakits.co.uk] It was the best ever (once i removed the sad belt clip, sorry). But this one is a decent second. I don't like any of the covers that show the entire screen or make the buttons available. I prefer taking it out of the pouch to using those ugly silicone skins, fattening leather covers or whatever.
