This NES Cartridge Now Stores 250GB of Anything
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:00 AM on October 7, 2008
To the modern modder, the NES cartridge is a tool as versatile as a Swiss Army Knife, or maybe one of those blade-things that fits in the credit card slot of one's wallet. Regardless, the NES-Box is an NES cartridge stuffed with a 2.5" 250GB SATA drive. Connecting to any computer via USB, the drive needs additional power to operate. And the best part? This baby is actually on sale for $US180. We find it hard to believe that the one in stock hasn't been purchased yet, but maybe if you ask the Etsy seller real nice, they'll fashion another just for you. [Etsy via ubergizmo]

Wow they're making, what? 110 dollars profit on that AND destroying a SMB3 cart?

250gb portable hard drive: $70 [www.google.com]
NES cartridge (for a shitty title): $1-$2
removing drive/board from portable hard drive enclosure, replacing NES cartridge guts with aforementioned drive/board and thus saving $100+
just don't want anyone getting shafted is all

for $180 I'd expect John Madden Football or better.

This isn't really that impressive, y'know...
Just buy a 250 GB Passport drive or something similar, murder an NES cartridge and put the two together. I think such a drive would fit inside a SNES cartridge without modification, which would be at least a little cooler.
My other main problem with these mods is that the more awesome the final result, the better the game you had to destroy.

Damn, and I needed SMB3 for the NES.

@centipedex: agreed, that would make it way more cooler than just an empty NES cart shell with an HDD in it.

But does SMB3 still play when you put it into a NES? Now that would be impressive.

would be even cooler to make it swappable for a single machine like this NES Mac mini . But it would run into trouble if you had to always blow into the cartridge to get it to pair...

Well, when you consider an original NES game costs $40-$50 for an oldie, but a goodie, this price of this version of a HD seems to make some sort of marketing sense.
Consumer sense? None. I wouldn't buy it.

Ever taken apart one of those 2.5" external hard drives? yeah, this is an easy, easy mod. Come to think of it, I should mod mine into a bunch of old slot A heatsinks. Pretty AND functional...

@centipedex: Actually, it's feasible assuming you use a small enough hard drive. Since the actual circuitry for the game takes up less than half the space of the actual cartridge casing itself, you can easily fit a 1.8' hard drive in there. Then you can have a working game + Storage!... Ok, I'm going to have to do this now, I'm pretty sure I have a 1.8' hard drive lying around here somewhere...

You guys know this is probably an item that is considered by the artist "a work of art" and albeit a Portable HD, if it does not work, the main function "is to serve as art."
So that's likely why one would pay so much.
For a) No warranty and product is implied to "work" but does not have to and b) The peace of mind knowing that you have a piece of pop culture that your friends will like.

"mod" just reached a new low on my concept today...
I mean, really, opening a nes cartridge, removing the chip and placing an HDD inside is considered a "mod"?
Anyways, it's the owner's call, but I don't think I'd have the guts to do that to a Super Mario 3 cartridge...
But maybe I'll do it to my BigFoot cartridge. :P
