The Paperclip iPhone/iPod Touch Stand
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:00 AM on October 1, 2008
If $US100 is just too much for you to pay for a homemade iPhone stand, then this paperclip version might be a better option. And to anyone who has ever paid more than 50 cents to hold any pocket electronic, hopefully this fan-made pwnage will keep your money in your pocketbook/child savings accounts next time. And you could use bandage tape to make a 'white' one..

But be sure to bend the paperclip EXACTLY to the measurements of his printout, or it simply won't work!

It needs to be wrapped in electrical tape or duct tape before I do this do avoid scratching the back on my phone... even more.

The cameraman whispering 'awesome' when he turned it around sold this video for me.
This'll be perfect next time my back goes out; just McGyver up a stand and I'm watching Tina Fey on my phone.

Yep, took the 5-10 min it takes to make one at the office (though honestly I just bent the thing in six places with out worring about obtuse or acute) put my touch on there and admired my handy work.
The I started to wonder WTF I was ever going to use it for since I didn't even bother keeping the free one that came with my touch.

Why not just use the little plastic stand that comes with the Touch? (I didn't listen to the audio, so I don't know if he said anything about it)

awesome hack man! now drop that thing in some some plastic dip (plastidip.com) and you can help avoid potential scratches.

I've used a simple business card holder. I created an iPhone web interface for my firm's web-based app, and wanted to demo it a tradeshow. I already had a number of business card holders, so voila! As cheap as 30 cents at OfficeMax/Depot/Staples.

Actually I was impressed with myself the other day on a plane. I didn't have a paper clip or would ever be that industrious...BUT, I wanted to watch a movie on my iphone but holding it was so uncomfortable.
Wait, what's this on my head (and probably yours) during this flight? Sunglasses.
Yup, I found folding up the sunglasses and placing the iPhone in between the lenses and "Arms" was a perfect impromptu stand.
I know I always have my sunglasses (Florida) so thats a perfect solution for me....not sure it would work on all types of sunglasses tho...
Begin experiment...

I used the business card stand method ([www.instructables.com]) out of some mounting board lying around.
Guess this one's worth a try too, though I worry what the scratch-making ends of the paper clip may do.

I spent the last 15 minutes wasting time at work perfecting this stand. (ie: making sure the back angle is steep enough for the stand to become stable) I initially wrapped the paper clip in scotch tape to protect the iPhone from unnecessary rubbing. It looked a little ghetto but worked. Then I saw an unused coffee straw sitting on my desk. I slipped that over the paper clip and bend another stand. Waa-laa... an instant protective cover to the stand.
