The Herman Miller Embody Chair, or Aeron Part II
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:40 AM on October 7, 2008
Can Man place a pricetag on the comfort of his rump? Yes. Yes he can. And the Embody chair—the sequel to the iconic, $US1.5 billion grossing Aeron chair by Herman Miller—is probably way, way too good for your posterior at its $US1,600 asking price. But that doesn't mean you can't gawk for a while.
Built from non-toxic and ecologically sustainable materials, the Embody is 96% recyclable. Though its mass appeal, of course, will be comfort. Packing seven different knobs and levers for every kind of adjustment you could desire, the seat is comprised of four layers—the bottom is a series of plastic bands providing suspension, the second is a sheet of coils for support, the third is a system hexagonal rings that shift with your weight and the final layer is a mesh that allows air circulation to keep the sitter cool.
The chair makes wild claims, like lowering a user's heart rate and helping oxygenate the blood stream. We can't affirm or deny such points, but we're pretty sure that the Embody is the snazziest looking office chair we've ever seen. And that's good enough for our butts. [Fortune via DVICE]

@Alex7575: WTF? why is the sky the limit? that's actually a good idea! Multiple people could use different seating positions at the same workstation, stored on the computer. Hell even my saturn has power seats. Why not this?

Pump unlimited coffee through that thing and attach an IV and I'll buy it. Oh, the coffee can't taste like the crud they serve at my work.

Is Herman Miller finally making a chair that is as comfortable as the Freedom Chair by Humanscale?

I'm going to have to purchase one of these someday.
As a side note I used to know a guy who worked for Herman Miller. They played Aeron Chair hockey each day at the office to blow off steam.

I have a nice lazy-boy desk chair right now that cost about 700 new. I can imagine my ass' comfort level if I had this puppy.

@Geisrud:
Well,
Since sky's the limit, how about putting a gyroscope in the chair so it prevents the user from sitting with bad posture, that should help with a lot of back related pains due to bad posture.

I shouldn't give away this idea I just had, but hell, I'll never do anything with it...
"They" should make a chair that can be adjusted via computer interface - wireless usb/bluetooth/wifi - take you pick, IDC. Or even with some wired connection for the duration of adjustments.
Could be powered via a standard power cable, and again, removed after adjustments are complete. Pneumatics will keep chair in position after disconnected just like chairs are now.

I used to have one of there nicer chairs and let me tell you what they are so worth it. On my last day I so wanted to steal the office chair because I knew what the price tag on those bad boys are.

Crap,
I already traded my first born for the older model.
Time to pick up the second born from school, and head to the furniture store...

While I can't justify a $1600 chair, I do have a $600 office chair and holy crap does it make working a lot more enjoyable. I'm a graphic designer, so I'm sitting a lot and it's a damn fine investment.
This probably is wildly comfortable.

@jpitsch: Ya know, I have a Freedom and it really hasn't done THAT much for me. The 'butt pan' tilts too far forward and can't be adjusted. Still, better than the old computer case I was using to sit on.

From what I see, you're the one criticizing mine, since I was being quite serious about it.

I have a Mirra (the actual Aeron v. 2) at work, and it is fantastic. Definitely beats the $150 Sam's Club special I have in my office at home (although I can't justify spending that kind of money for my home office chair. I just don't sit in it enough.)

I don't understand why manufacturers keep using those hard plastic wheels. They're very noisy and scratch hardwood floors.
I bought a chair several years ago that has roller blade wheels. They're fantastic. My floors still look like new and they're virtually silent.

We used to have fully loaded Aeron chairs at the mid-sized internet consulting firm I used to work for. I'm now doing consulting work at a business unit of one of the largest companies in the world and I'm sitting in a broken down office chair that probably cost less than $100 new. I'd say that the Aeron chair is worth the extra money. I work at a computer for a good deal of the day and having an ergonomic chair makes a huge difference.
I was hoping that this new chair would bring the price of the Aeron down, but it probably won't at its current price point.
@kaylix: Herman Miller offers different casters/glides for different types of flooring.

i have a Aeron chair at home and they are well worth the money!!!!!!
It's not often chairs (even ergonomic ones) come in sizes that will fit someone that is 6'5".

I used to wonder what idiot would spend a kilodollar on a chair, then I realized I was spending that much a _year_ for computer upgrades. I've had an Aeron for over 9 years now, and (until I saw the above) I couldn't imagine life without it!

That thing is hideous.
Looks like a prop from the old show UFO.
And whats up with that color??!!
I can't believe the Aeron is 14 years old already.

The concierge at my condo just got an Aeron chair. Considering that I sit in a chair that costs a fraction as as much as the on in my office I was a bit jealous until I realized that I work 10-5 in shorts and a t-shirt and make 4 times as much as he does letting my drunk ass in at 2AM on a Monday night in a suit.
Then I went to my office and saw my sad chair and realize that if I asked my boss for a $1,200 office chair he would laugh at me and tell me to get out of his 5 room office suite that is bigger than my condo and I was frankly a little jealous again.

Considering that many investment banks are outfitted with Aeron chairs, we should all be able to buy preowned ones for really cheap!

@silence04: I have the same, but opposite problem - I'm 5'0" - my feet dangle like a kid on most chairs! But I do have an Aeron at work and with a footrest it's amazing. I haven't been able to convince work to buy me the smallest size of Aeron ... yet... :)

That is retail price, in the office furniture world they automatically take off 50% and usually another 10-20%. The hard plastic wheel are for carpeted floors.

Looks like something Dr. Dave Bowman would site in.
I have an Aeron. Meh. I find the story about its development more compelling than the chair itself. Especially when Malcolm Gladwell tells it.
This chair however is tres cool: [www.supporto.co.uk]
