The DIY Quick-Draw Camera Strap That Puts All Other Straps to Shame
Posted by John Mahoney at 11:50 PM on October 10, 2008
SLR Camera straps haven't changed much over the last, oh, century or so, which is surprising considering how awkward most of them are. Then came the R-Strap, a $US44 strap that uses the tripod mount on the bottom of your camera instead of the rings on the sides, allowing for a comfortable over-the-shoulder sling paired with quick-draw action. Even better are these two how-tos, that show you how to make one yourself for just a few bucks worth of hardware (which Charlie from Wired had success with judging by his photo here). Check out the video below of an actual R-Strap in action Taxi Driver style for inspiration.

Now I'm really tempted to try this out with my Sony Ericsson cameraphone just for hilarity points, although I have a feeling the SE tripod mount kit will just fall off the camera

I need a quick draw big-chief-photog camera strap because you never know when some doped up psycho poptart will flash some dugout.
Or if I want to snag a pic of some duckies.

That's nice, but for most of us consumers, our lenses aren't the $2000 variety, and thus don't have the tripod mount. I wonder if it would work with the tripod mount on the camera instead.

@billwilljr: At the part in the video where he has a second camera on a tripod you can see that the camera on the r-strap is connected by the body's tripod socket.

Do we have any English speakers who can translate?

@kalleboo: Hope your SE's camera is better than mine at quick draw snapping, or else you're going to have something that looks like the cover art for a NIN album.

@billwilljr: From their site: "Our locking FastenR connects the R-Strap to the tripod socket located on either the camera body or the lens."
It's also mentioned in the body of this post.

I really like the concept, though I can't say I have the profession nor equipment to need/take photos often and quickly.

@billwilljr: there are plenty of non-$2000 lenses that have tripod mounts... you can get a mount for essentially any moderate telephoto lens.

@FThorn: Sure, he wants this strap so his camera will be ready in case a hootchie shows her cootchie.
...or if there be ducks about.

He clearly shows that you don't need to attach it to the lens - it can be the mount on the camera.
I do shoot photos professionally, and I'd certainly give this a shot...

This is a simple effective idea.
I don't understand why we still have screw based tripod mounting and not quick release mounting. Some tripods come with quick release adapters now, but those are easily lost plus it adds to the size of the camera. Would be nice if camera manufactures made the chassis mount modular so you could "snap" in different mounting options.

The R-Strap and others like it are just copies of single point weapon sling designs with a camera mount, I've actually adapted one of my slings to attach to my EOS XT and gotta say it works great, is way stronger, and was even cheaper than the actual R-Strap.

@Discofunk:
that would be a great idea except that for the first few years they would be fighting about who's quick release was superior and all the tripod makers would need to make plates to adapt to them. of course after a while, they will likely all settle on one just because it's easier for everyone, then Sony will come out with it's own proprietary mount that for some reason does the same thing, but costs more.

this is awesome and i've been looking for something like this for a while, but its debatable whether its worth $44.

If you've ever been on the sidelines of a game with a 400mm lens on a monopod, and the action has come at you and you've need to whip out your wide zoom, you realize how useful this is (assuming it works). The regular shoulder strap doesn't cut it.
This isn't for the photogs that spend 2 hours taking a single picture, or for the artsy crowd. This is for those that take several hundred an hour as a sports photog or photojournalist and need better usability in their equipment.

This is a terrible idea! The bolt in that picture is what screws into the tripod mount, this loosens all the time!
Terrible idea!
