Stable, Sane Young Man Installs DIY RFID Implant into His Hand
Posted by John Herrman at 8:13 PM on October 15, 2008
Some people are sick of waiting for the RFID implant controversy to play out, and at least one of those people is taking action. YouTube user Quethe has posted a video demonstrating his own RFID implantation technique, involving a terrifying pencil-size needle and a chip designed for pets, which he is using for a predictably unnerving purpose. Also — and Quethe makes this quite clear — this implant does not mean that he is the Antichrist. Phew! Mildly NSFW video and generally unhinged Millenialist ruminations after the jump.
I implanted a RFID chip in my hand. I injected the chip myself from supplies bought on the internet. This tag is readable from up to 2 inches from my hand.
I am currently using it to open my handgun safe for instant access. I can have a gun in hand in one second in blackness without fumbling with buttons or codes.
If you are convinced that this is the "Mark of the Beast", then from one Christian to another I hope you read the Book of Revelation and apply more understanding to it that what you hear from those who only offer fear.
Get your Gideons/veterinary surgery kits out and check out Quethe's full posting at BoingBoing Gadgets or YouTube [BBG]

That's pretty badass. 20 years from now we're going to be commenting on Engadget (BURN), saying "I remember back when that kid put that vet chip in his hand. Now everybody's got the implant..."
or maybe they'll be saying "remember when the antichrist first revealed himself in that youtube video?"
sorry for the engadget burn, btw... couldn't resist :)

@Wegmans: Just a thought for you, I work at a hospital, and their Internet blocking software only blocks IE, and most staff do not have admin access to install anything else, but I use portable firefox and it gets past everything that is blocked on IE. Give it a try, unless the IT staff at your office are a bit smarter than the average bear.

thats cool. i could see lots of uses for it. and if he has kids in the house with that gunsafe this seems extra safe as he can lock the keys and/or combination in the safe also and only have access himself.

@Curves: I have got to agree with you. This guy's an asshole and a few other colorful expletives I can think of. I have issues with gun ownership (not the least of which being that's NOT what the second amendment says or intended) but guns in the house when you have kids is particularly stupid.

Y'know, he's got a really good idea though. If the only person who can open the gun safe is the adult in the house, thats the safest gun anywhere, at the moment. Especially if its embedded in his skin. No pesky kid can steal his dad's keys to show off to his friends.
I think maybe this should be required for gun owners with children!

I think this is kinda cool. But it's still not safe to have guns in the house. What if the Archangel Michael wakes him up in the middle of the night and tells him it's RAPTURE TIME and to shoot his family. My point is - everyone is unstable at some point in their lives, so it's dangerous to have a gun in the house, period. Particularly someone who is willing to implant RFID chips in themselves and believes in Revelations the rapture.

Other than the nerd-chic appeal, I can't think of a good reason to do this. If you really need that kind of access, why not build the freaking thing into a ring, a wristwatch or some other easily worn accoutrement. Having something inserted into my body so I can log in easier is flat out dumb.

@rsquared: I didnt mean the guns, he can own an arsenal for all I care. He is a wanktard for having an chip implanted when he could have easily put the chip in a ring, bracelet, etc. He deserves the infection he gets as well as the MANY hardward upgrades that I hope hurt a lot. Some people will do anything for internet fame.
As for the kids and guns, kids only sneak into things they arent allowed in or are curious about. Any responsible person who has guns in their house should show them to the children, safely let them handle them (kids are super tactile/very curious) and educate the children on firearms so they know its a danger and why they should leave them alone. Thats responsible parenting AND responsible gun ownership.

@Zomb: all i get from it is we get a militia and WE get guns.
The Second Amendment, as passed by the House and Senate, reads:
" A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. "
The original and copies distributed to the states, and then ratified by them, had different capitalization and punctuation:
" A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Why all this talk of religion? Its just an rfid tag...by the time this become mandatory in order to check for terrorist on plane, escaped convicts, proof of millitary duty - and eventually your personal non-expiring visa card, the rfid implant will be as small as a common needle, dont worry so much.

RFID and the mark of the beast don't necessarily go hand-in-hand; The mark of the beast is more about the application of something like RFID. Use as a device for world-government identification and commerce is what it references in Revalation (The means, not necessarily RFID).

Well to use RFID there is no need to implant anything in your skin, he could just use a card, but maybe that would slow him down. Of course, the best (obvious) solution to his problem is a fingerprint reader or some sort of biometric security. Why put something under your skin when you can use your skin to begin with?
