Sony PS3 Update Will Sell You Premium Themes

Sony has dropped a brand-new feature on its PS3 console that will let you buy Premium themes--specialised themes that contain high-quality graphics, customised buttons, and (sometimes) special sounds. Since they cost real money, PS3 users will have an option to preview the images before deciding to drop the cash. The company plans on releasing 6 to 10 premium themes every month, which will run the gamut from anime-styled to NCAA-franchised content. It's pretty, but is it worth your penny? Not at all. Themes are nice, but not so important that I'd pay money for them, just like I wouldn't pay money for ringtones or game demos.
On the other side of the coin, there are people out there that actually pay money for ringtones, and pay money for demos (Qore?); so there will certainly be people that will drop money on this...

I have my PS3 playing music and stuff when people come over. So, if there was a really nice one, I'd drop $1 - $3 on it.

MS has been milking gamers spare 'points' for this stuff on the 360 for years, so I'm not surprised. A shame though. One of the things I enjoyed about PSN was there are quite a few high quality PS3/PSP themes for free right now.
Just leave the pricing structure on PSN alone Sony. I better not start seeing $9.99 games selling for 800 'PSN points', then only being able to get said points in blocks of 1000 for 12.50.

There are lots of indie themes out there. Most of them are horrible unless you are really into the game itself.
There are, however, software apps out there to create your own themes, if you have the time and the inclination.
The software is also free.
I think you'd have to be insane to pay for a theme. Maybe I should start a business creating them...

Sony even provided detailed instructions on how to make your own. Someone smart enough could even replace the sound files if they dug around some.
The problem as mentioned above is most themes are lazy or plain sloppy. I think I made a pretty nice one for the kingdom hearts franchise, only thing missing is the trophy and internet search icons.
But most are crap, if not totally buggy.
So 99 cents to $2 for most people who don't have the patience or photoshop skill to make their own icons and backgrounds isn't too horrible. Sony also said in the blog they're not dropping free themes.

I love to read from all the little kids crying like babies about what should be FREE. A lot of the themes they will be releasing wil be LICENSED material. You have to PAY the original creator. It's not about Sony making ton'o'money off of you.

Now if 360 would only copy them and let you preview themes before buying. It's hit and miss on whether you see any screen shots before buying, and that's the #1 reason I don't buy more themes.

Pretty themes...that's really something...now if the PS3 can come out with some good games instead, I'd dropped the cash for it.
