Sizemodo: New MacBook and MacBook Pro vs. Their Forebearers
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:34 AM on October 15, 2008

The new MacBook and MacBook Pro may be moulded by hand from a single piece of adamantium or whatever, but how do they size up to their previous versions? The new MacBook Pro actually has a larger footprint (X Y) than the old MacBook Pro, but it's also slightly thinner (tough to tell in person). But the new MacBook, on the other hand, has a nearly identical footprint (X Y), but seems much thinner than the old MacBook. And the numbers agree.
In other words, to the naked eye, big improvement on the MacBook dimensions. Minor improvement on the MacBook Pro dimensions.
3.3mm doesn't sound like much, but combined with beveling, it makes the new MacBook look and feel much more like premium device.

@Mr.Purple: I agree. This is just a huge gap that they created between the pro and the regular model. Just when you thought that they were creating a mini-Pro out of the Macbook, they took away a vital part.

@revolution-inc: They didn't, it's just printed really small on the option key. It's never been the primary text. Also, taking a second look, the command leaf logo is now at the bottom of the key, in line with the text, which now only reads "cmd" rather than "command". And the expose logo on F3 now has a filled-in look, with more windows open. Now it has 3 windows open, and there is just a box with three smaller boxes within. The new keyboard has a box, filled in, with 6 non-filled windows within.

@PCLoadLetter: Apple Care, my friend. It has to be fixed too, because the hinges after time warp the screen/ case. I tried NOT sending it off the second time, but it started to get fucked.
Apple Care for that one computer has saved me SO much money, it is unreal. I they have had to replace (after 4 repairs, each) 2 computers now. This one now is on it's 3rd repair for the disk drive.
I am not hard on them, either. I have other computers that have lasted for ever. After the first one got replaced, I stopped taking it places as much and it turned to my desktop, pratically. It still needed an assload more repairs. Now I use this one like I should and it is good case-wise. The DVD drive has gone out twice, though. Weak.
The good thing is that I will never have to buy another computer. Every year Apple pays for a new MBP for me at my inconvenience.

@mths: I'd also like to add that not only is it major redesigns of a big companies products, but they are also items many people use, and are popular in the media. I mean, what gadgets do you guys really want to read about instead..a TV review? perhaps PC laptop reviews (which are posted BTW)? perhaps coverage of major PC events? Fujitsu and HP dont exactly have big product redesigns every few years of items known for aesthetic appeal. Perhaps a USB humping dogs/robot?
Most of the gadget reviews/gadgets here have nothing to do with me, but I dont bitch about it, I read them anyways...Mostly because I like gadgets.

@unkpku is therefore i am: agreed. no need for the disemvowelling. you guys let people go on rants elsewhere in this post about excessive mac posting and gizmodo being a bunch of mac fanboys, only to have people stand up for you. then you follow it up by disemvowelling someone for showing that they're not impressed by things that really aren't all that impressive (see my post buried in a thread further up for more detail on that) while he wasn't even being hostile or even a straight up apple hater.
you're not exactly helping your case, gizmodo.

Posted 4:10 AM 16/10/08
@redkamel: i'm not anti-apple or even complaining about the coverage, but you seemed to make an argument against the coverage here. these product redesigns are primarily that: redesigns. sure, they make the obligatory performance enhancements, but they're not exactly earth shattering. this is evidenced by the fact that we see sizemodos and an ooh-ahh piece on the new case, but the specs for the things are tacked onto the anouncement with no comment.
and the multitouch glass trackpad? should we all be tripping over ourselves with praise for taking the iphone interface (sans display, no less) and plopping it into a laptop? if so, our standards for being impressed (at least by apple items) has really fallen. i can only imagine the adoration we'll see when cut and paste get added to the iphone.
now, all this being said, those that are complaining about the coverage are idiots. it's been relatively tame this time around by comparison to some of the events over the last couple years (though 14 posts related to the event still seems a bit excessive when you consider the content of the event), and no one's forcing anyone to read the apple posts.

I'm sorry to brust your bubble, but in fact the new pro is smaller. Basic Math people:
Old Pro: 14.1 (9.6) (1)=135.36
New Pro: 14.35 (9.82) (.95)=133.87
You better start making numbers instead of guiding by common sense, .05 less in thickness is more (in percentage) than the increment in the other dimensions.
