Sega Returning to the Hardware Biz with Vision PMP for 2009
Posted by Jack Loftus at 5:00 AM on October 6, 2008
Sony's PSP is currently getting its butt handed to it by the Nintendo DS, but don't tell that to Sega. With its upcoming Sega Vision PMP, due out in the UK sometime in 2009, the former hardware company-turned-sub par software maker is hoping to take on the jack-of-all-trades portable market. The prognosis for such a device is OK, but then again how could it not be? After all, this is the company that brought us the 32X, Saturn, and the Dreamcast—the only direction any Sega hardware offering could go from this point forward is up.
As the comments about this device over at the Register suggest, this is one butt-ugly portable that probably shouldn't have been compared to the PSP, let alone a DS. The "games" it plays are actually Java-based affairs, and its strengths, should they materialise in 2009, would be as a portable TV, movie player, camera, and even an eBook reader.
It's a device you should probably watch in the dark or after a few pints, but it does in fact mark a return to the hardware business for Sega after two generations away from the game. We're just having trouble figuring out what the hook is. Consumers aren't likely to be swayed by simple branding, Sega's storied history or not.

i just dont understand how the company can be so not consumer-minded. how could they not have hired some good designer?? how did that design ever get past EVERY. SINGLE. STAGE. OF. DEVELOPMENT?? i just dont understand how a company can spend considerable amounts of time and money and come out with such a lacking product in so many ways. it blows my mind.

The sad thing is, Gizmodo thinks this is a real Sega product, as opposed to the millions of other Chinese knockoffs that just use an official brand name. Look at the damn thing, it's a cheap knock off with a Sega brand.
Where's the official press, official sega page? All we have is some youtube video as PROOF? C'mon guys, where's the credibility in that??

What the hell is this? Not only does it not have it's own game format, all the media features look run-of-the-mill, and the actual device looks ugly and too big.
Make a new Game Gear, with a proper game format, and stop fucking around, Sega.

Giz, you're definitely wrong on this one. Sega is NOT making these things and thus have hardly "returned to the hardware business". They are indeed just a Chinese knockoff. They're also not even selling them. They're putting them in as prizes in their arcade UFO catcher games in Europe. There's no reason why this should be blown up to more than it is. A cheap Chinese "MP4 Player" stamped with a Sega brand and put in as a cheap crappy prize by Sega Prize. That's it.

You know, my first reaction was pretty much the same as everybody else's here, concerning the design and features listed. But then I noticed that this is the size of a credit card! Take a look at the video at the 1:00 mark...
This thing does not need to play games, just because it's Sega. If Yamaha can specialize in (musical) keyboards, and motorcycles, and if Bic can do lighters, and pens, then gosh darn it, Sega can do videogames, pachinko machines, and PMP players!

Fugly and the interface is very weak on par with Web 0.5.
Sega deserves to be bitch-slapped a few more times for their undeserved product arrogance and h/w shovelware not to mention their nationalistic bent (they never support Sega of America and always pander to the whims of SoJ).

Throughout the whole video, I thought the thing was the size of a DVD case, maybe smaller. Then that final shot sized it up to a credit card. That's not bad, not bad at all. The design is still late 90s and won't cut it amongst it's competition.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: I'm inclined to agree. I just went through 4 months worth of press releases on Sega's corporate site and haven't seen ANYTHING on the "Vision". I think someone dropped the ball on this one. If not... I think SEGA's marketing department would probably have a better time pushing this as a novelty gift of sorts. I mean they need to add cell phone capabilities and GPS before I'd even become remotely interested in something like this.

@jewsrock: good point man... they never seem to design stuff that well and they try to beat everybody releasing new technology which lets them get there asses kicked...aka gamegear, sega cd, 32x, saturn, dreamcast...
not to mention all there design flaws... none of there controllers were that comfy or ergonomic... 32x is just a bitch to install... there was one cool looking game (forgot its name.... commercial was in a butcher shop of some kind) and when i go to rent it i find out that you need a 32x and a sega cd to play it...

they should really nail out the kinks... they always seem to have a few too many kinks with there gear...
-sega cd was an epic fail
-rented a segacd game and it turned out that the game needed a 32x and a segacd to play it...
-there console controllers were always bulky and shitty.
-virtua fighter got its ass kicked by tekken...
-virtua cop got pwned by time crisis...
-most of there good games are racing arcade machines that you have to dump money into (ferrari f355, rally champs, daytona, super gt)...
stick to racing/arcade cabinet games sega...thats all your good for...

hold up....why rip on the dreamcast. The DC could be one of the greatest consoles of all time. WAY ahead of the nintendo 64 and PS1. that thing rocked. Load speed, graphics quality, controller setup. How about the personal screen on the controller? That brought Madden to a whole new level. Calling plays without your opponent seeing anything. C'mon. SEGA led the way. Maybe this thing sucks but I doubt it. Game Gear still kills. WAY ahead of the comp back in the day. Stand up arcade units? Forget about it.

Yeah, right, that's Sega alright with that Genisis era logo and the rabbit ears for the v in vision. Not. And they want me to use this thing which they say is the size of a credit card? This better be a Chinese 5th grader's beginning photoshop/vid production class project or all things Sega need to be razed to prevent further contamination of the tech gene pool.

Sorry, but this just doesn't strike me as impressive, let alone able to entertain. Even the promo video was stupid. Way to simple with weird music to boot.
Sure, you have tv on the go, but how reliable will the signal be? You can play movies, but who will just give up their 120gb iPod Classic or even 8gb iPod Touch for some SEGA hand held that can only boast 2gb? With the DSi having a .3mp camera (weak), I can't see this going beyond 2mp, maybe 3mp, so it won't be the next camera for your picture taker. And the thing looks hideous.
"Even play the Java Mini Game" - My personal favorite. I love how they call it THE Java Mini Game.
I personally think SEGA has lost it's touch over the years. Now I just see their feeble efforts and cry...
@ LittleBigPlaneteer: I'm with you on that.

Really SEGA has no business just putting out another dime-a-dozen PMP. Truthfully, I'll bet it's not all that bad. But really, a company like SEGA to put out a piece of technology that doesn't even remotely utilize it's vast history of game development; shame on them. Without harping on them too much, I have to say a TV is handy, but not at all ground-breaking (it was an enhancement for the GameGear). Plus it's also important to ask whether it's a digital tuner or analog.

The Dreamcast was awesome, Soul Caliber II, phantasy star online, twice the power of other consoles at the time, just it was up against such a straight down the middle of the road mass market device such as playstation is all.
Remember tomb raider was exclsive to saturn once, then ps came along and nicked it - marketing disaster that started the end of sega imo.
