Reggie Denies HD Wii in 2011 Rumour...Sort Of
Posted by Sean Fallon at 2:45 AM on October 8, 2008
You know the drill. First a rumour spreads across the internet. Then an executive in the company offers up some sort of vague denial of said rumour. Time passes. An announcement is made. Guess what? The rumours were true all along. Obviously, that doesn't happen in every situation, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case with the recent rumour that an HD version of the Wii will hit the market in 2011. In a recent interview with Venture Beat, Nintendo of America Pres Reggie Fils-Aime referred to the story as "speculation" and claimed that showing a prototype to the game development community is "not the way they would find out" about a project. While this may be true, rumours tend to stick around in the absence of a flat-out denial. [Venture Beat via Crunchgear]

This kind of sucks, I mean, my current Wii will be useless in 2-3 years?

The Wii is just an appetizer. Big N's next system is gonna be killer. That way when the next generation of systems come out, everyone will say that the xbox and ps3 have the same graphics while everyone will go bonkers over Big N's explosive (hd) graphics :)

I don't see how he could flat out deny it. The next Wii would just about HAVE to have HD capabilty if they want to continue their trend of basing their platforms on tech that was big in the previous generation.

It's the obvious next step for the Wii. And is Reggie Fils-Aime really famous enough to be on a one name only basis (especially in the month of October which belongs to that other Reggie guy)?

@Glare: Its been out for about 2 years now, so a 5 year life cycle aint bad for a gaming system.

@Earthslide: WOW! I thought your first comment was a joke, but you actualy seem to believe it! Are you realy looking forward to Super Mario HD? Why? It won't do much to improve on Nintendo's art style. Cartoon graphics are just that, cartoon graphics. They don't need to be in HD to be impressive. You will still get the EXACT same games looking EXACTLY the same. Zelda or Metroid might benifit from an HD facelift but the rest...not so much.....

Perhaps it isn't a update (ala DS) but a brand new console.
And as we know Nintendo is almost as tight lipped as Apple when it comes to new product announcement.

Most consoles have life span of 5 years. By 2011, the Wii will be 5 years old. This is a good thing, Glare, because 3 years from now the Wii's graphics will be horribly outdated.

@Glare: I'd say mine has been more or less useless since I bought it. Sure, I've bought a handful of games and I've played the hell out of Wii Sports Bowling, but compared to the gaming time I've gotten out of all my previous consoles, the Wii comes up _way_ short. And there's not much on the horizon that makes me think this is going to change.
Maybe Big N will be in a much better position with third parties after winning this round of console wars, and the Wii HD will end up seeing the kind of broad high-quality library a console needs.

@Heart-Skull-Kid: Wii graphics already are horribly outdated.

I wonder just how "HD" Nintendo will go. Will they bring the graphics up to what next gen consoles will be or will they just say "720p is good enough, only 50% of the market has 1080p so there's no reason to support it!"

This won't happen. There is no reason for Nintendo to do this.
