PSP Getting Dual Shock 3 Support Through 'PSP Plus'
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:40 PM on October 9, 2008
We've seen the patents and the rumours that the Sony PlayStation Portable would begin accepting the Dual Shock 3 controller. Heck, we've even seen those too impatient to wait who've modded the experience on their own. But finally, Sony has announced a new feature called PSP Plus that will allow you to play PSP (2000 or 3000 models) with your Dual Shock 3 (or SIXAXIS?) controller. But there are a few catches...
First, the good news. PSP Plus will support controller vibration and add the use of the second analogue stick. Yay!
Then the bad news. It's still unclear just how all of the hookups occur, but it will require you have a PS3. The first supported game, Resistance Retribution, will need the PSP Plus option to be activated through Resistance 2 (which is a PS3 game). This syncing sounds more invasive than a simple A/V out cord to your TV, which may or may not also be a required component of the hookup.
In other words, that dream of a Dual Shock that snaps onto the PSP is not happening. And by requiring a PS3/TV, Sony may have defeated the whole purpose of the PSP. But we'll let you know if/when we get a clearer picture of how the peripheral support works. [Kotaku]

Wow - why wouldn't they just bluetooth all that up?

This just seems to be another way to get their proprietary format (UMD) into your home. If you need to have a PS3 and a TV anyway, why not just make the PSP games downloadable to your PS3s HDD? Oh, wait. Because that would mean that you wouldn't need to buy a new PSP, if you're like me and have a PSP 1000.

Why would I be playing psp while standing next to my ps3 (assuming I had either)?

Reminds me a lot of the Sega Nomad, essentially a portable genesis that you could plug a 2nd controller into for 2 player games. I guess it'd be more handy if you could somehow put PS2 games on to the PSP instead of re buying the port.

@Serolf Divad: Don't forget the cables for your PSP!

@DaveTyranham: PSP doesn't have BT (though why they didn't add it and a camera into model 3000 is beyond me)...
They SHOULD just put a $5 BT Dongle in with the RR UMD ... jmho.

So: you can have a dualshock controller on your PSP for a mere $400.00 (but Sony will throw in a PS3 for free).

I might like to play a few PSP games on my tv with a dual shock but why not just let me play my PSP games right on my PS3? I already download them there.

Here's an idea.. how about just selling the games through their online store. and giving us the option of playing it on PS3 or PSP..
if every game was optional for portability than the PSP would actually make sense.

There's one word to describe Sony and its PSP... Idiocy.
As hanspecans stated... All a new PSP needs is Dual Analog Sticks and Vibration. 2 simple upgrades that would make the PSP a MUST HAVE and the ultimate portable gaming device.
Does Sony care? Nope... Remember, Idiocy my friends... IDIOCY.

Hmmm as long as after the setup occurs you can simply plug a mini USB cable from the PSP to the Dual shock...I am fine with it. If it has to be plugged into and played on a TV...why?

@MaTsKaT: You're right, Fuck Sony for making a portable console you enjoy.
Go ahead, pirate those games, and:
Fuck the developers.
Fuck the American jobs.
Fuck the economy.
All this fucking shit makes me sound really fucking mature, right?
Exactly. Sure, homebrew has it's uses - but it's still a liability for Sony. Also, if Sony "has lost you", then I suggest you no longer buy PS3 games, because part of that money for each game sold goes to Sony (Gasp!).

I think this is like a backup plan for when the PS2 finally actually DIES (seriously, kill it already, it's annoying to see them still on shelves). You want the PS3 to become the new big daddy, you gotta kill the old one. MS did and look, their 360 is loads better with more players.
Well, my guess is that Sony is planning for the PSP to become the next PS2. So instead of a PS2 sitting on your shelf gathering dust, you can fork over for a PSP to gather dust til a nice game that supports PSP Plus comes along.

Alright I gotta vent, but W-T-F. Nintendo did this and everybody griped about it. Now Sony steals it and makes it more complicated. You'll need a PSP, PS3, AV cables for PSP, DualShock 3, USB cable, Resistance: Retribution, and Resistance 2. That's 7 different items, and quite a few seperate purchases. Nintendo had the Gamecube, GBA, connection cable and a gamecube games that supports it. That's 4 items and people flipped out. And all this does is allow DS3 on a PSP game. I hated when Nintendo did it, and I'm gonna gate it when Sony does it.

Plus, live tv ie- Dmb, or FloTv or wireless tv through an account that could host all cable and satellite tv networks online and you log online to your account and watch live tv similar to Samsung's Sch B 600 PDA Smart phone that can watch live Satellite Tv and has a 10 megapixel lens, but I like Karl Zeiss's lens more since it's more compact and it has the facial recognition mode, and I know it could be easily made larger than a 15 megapixel lens and be smaller than a thumb nail, to fit to a new PSP system!

Yeah, with the dual analog thumb nob buttons that rumble? Sweet, it was my idea at first! LOL. Any ways, what's next a larger hard drive, with a ssd hdd, and a Karl Zeiss 13.6 mega pixel lens or larger, a bluetooth cordless head set, and the bluetooth built inside, and have a Pico projector and won't need a dongle peice for it's GPS system? And use it as a remote controller for roombas and rozio's amongst other toys that could fly too? That would be so awesome if it could be compatible with a ssd hdd that is like Samsung's upto 256 gb's or more; and be built tough so that it's water proof ie- H20 Audio styled casing accessory and maybe include the option of a GSM sim card insert or a quantum computing connection ie- OQO's computer phone; since theirs can play COunter Strike and Half Life. But, I also look forward to the Microsoft's sync voice recognition software to be add to Sony's PSP with all of the other specs that I've listed too! But, having it included with a LCD touchscreen and pulsing LED lights for the buttons, and built with a sliding screen that could have a biometrics button would be fun too! Plus, a USB slot etc... Cheerio!

Plus, a wireless s-video connection, so the cable connects to the tv's video and audio input plugs with a wireless sensor, then it can display the PSP onto your tv screen through the wireless s-tv that's added with an USB system too. That would be nice!
