Podcaster Version 1.1 Available on iPhone App Black Market
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:45 PM on October 1, 2008
Podcaster, the app that just won't quit no matter how many times Apple tries to shut it down, is now up for download on Cydia as version 1.1. People who want Podcaster can now get it through the iPhone app black market, though questions about why it was blocked from legitimate channels are still left unanswered. [Thanks Ameet and MN!]

Don't bother with Podcaster - there's also a free alternative on Cydia, can't remember it's name.
Podcaster will only give you a 14 day trial, whereas the other one is completely free.

2 things; 1. There will be a 14-day free trial on Cydia which asks you to register ("buy"?) after 14 days (via @iPhonePodcaster on twitter). 2. people like me who already have it installed on their iPhones from before it was banned off the ad-hoc distrobution will still be able to get updates without jailbreaking

Is anyone surprised that developers will turn to the alternatives to distribute the software they effort into developing when the App Store turns them down?
I stopped jailbreaking when I moved to 2.0, but Podcaster is the one application type I've missed since I got rid of my PSP. I'll be jailbreaking again just for Podcaster.

ok so it was banned or being a lot like the one they "already provide" and could be confusing to the end user but how do you explain the one that is exactly like the weather app??
a hacked iphone is a happy iphone!!

Yeah Podcaster is tight. I'd like to try it out. I just may have to have a friend do some jb'ing. They shouldn't stop. They don't need to put up with Apples crap. Podcaster schools Apples current podcast implementation.

The things is, it provides functionality that the iphone doesnt, such as direct downloading of podcasts over the air right? so, if apple wont approve it, it seems the only reason could be that apple is working on an app of their own.

@kellygeorge:
Sure, then when Steve rolls out a new software update, it gets touted as "Apple's Innovation!"; then Apple rakes in the $10 OS upgrade fees while the original author gets the cold shoulder. It would be an absolute fiasco.

I want to jailbreak again, now. But last time I jailbroke 2.1 with QuickPwn, it made my iPhone REALLY unstable.

Here is what the banner should really be. And what Podcaster has done makes me feel real good inside. Like watching a villain brought to justice I suppose.
Heres to all the apps that were kicked to the dirt! May they all get a second, fair chance on Cydia.

Is there a resource that can help users convert their legit iPhone app to a black market one?

Trying it out on the 14 day trial. So far it works very well. Even if I don't use it frequently, thinking seriously of buying it just to stick it to the man. Anyone willing to produce useful applications should be rewarded.
BTW, contrary to what Apple says, I was not very confused by any (lack) duplication of features.

Out at about the same time is the much better, IMO, MobileCast (also distributed via Cydia) and it happens to be free. I've tried them both and one of the major differences is that with Mobilecast you can search for podcasts and add them directly with the app, or you can use a [free] website that lets you search, subscribe and then sync with the Iphone app. In contrast, the Podcaster app forces you to painstakingly key in a podcast source manually (a task made all the more unbearable without cut and paste).
On another note, I don't really see Apple adding this functionality in a future update as it would remove control from Apple's hands which currently ensures that every podcast subscription on Itunes gets their approval first. Bypassing Itunes as both the Podcast and Mobilecast do would remove that ability which is why it got rejected in the first place.

With Apple blocking a perfectly good app all because they didn't think of this functionality first, they SHOULDN'T quit! Even Windows Mobile will run apps that extend overlooked functionality! And MSFT doesn't get into a tizzy and start demanding these apps get blocked. Thus shockingly WM is actually a more open platform.

Only problem I see with the app "black market" is the fact you have to jailbreak your phone to get the apps. And once you jailbreak, it's too UN-resistible for most folks to not go to ipr0x.com and get all the apps for free. Podcaster included.

@addiktion: They don't need to put up with the iPhone? I think you may have missed a key point here abou....OH, you mean that kind of crap from Apple.

People put hard work into Cydia and Installer and I doubt they want their work referred to as black market...
