Pandora and Other Webcasters Saved By Act of Congress
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 9:50 AM on October 1, 2008
Today the otherwise preoccupied Senate quickly passed the Webcaster Settlement Act many of you petitioned for, granting Pandora and other net radio services the right to negotiate royalties with the record industry's SoundExchange coalition for the years 2006 to 2015. OK, that's a mouthful—what it means is, they will likely not be driven to bankruptcy due to unreasonable royalty rates. I say "likely" because they still need to dot i's and cross t's on the royalty deal itself, but here, Congress approved their ability to do that, and just in the nick of time. Anyway, the world itself may be collapsing, but at least you know our legislators listened to your pleas to keep your favourite web radio broadcasters in business. [Digital Media Association]

Hey, Giz! How about a question of the day along the lines of "What internet radio stations, if any, do you listen to?" I'd love to see what my fellow Giz readership listens to.
For me, it's a 50/50 split between Radio Paradise and SomaFM's Indie Pop Rocks!, one or the other broadcasting 24/7 throughout my apartment. So this announcement from the Senate is great news.

@Beta @ Random:
While Last.fm is a great service, in my opinion Pandora trumps it as far as recommendations go.

Screwing webcasters they way they have, the guys running SoundExchange need to be stripped naked and dropped in a prison shower room on "Free Viagra Samples Day".

@bosskev: Sky.FM - has a wide selection of music I like, and specifically has a solo piano and solo guitar channel that are great for work.

@92BuickLeSabre: Tim's not so bad once you get to know him. He and his group take you to this nice compound in NE and they teach you about music recommendation. My name is no longer Robert.
Now, it is Tanya.

Thank God! I just discovered a brand-new artist that I'd never heard of before just by listening to Pandora this evening. I quickly went out and bought the album.
SoundExchange/RIAA are evil and idiots not to understand how important net radio - especially services like Pandora - is.
Viva Pandora!

Fack!
Now I can't monopolize the internet with my pirate radio station!
:(
Damn you Congress!
Whoever thought that charging royalties from internet radio stations was a good idea is most definitely a puppet of the devil, fully including the hand inserted through the hole for devil operation.
Congradulations!

Meh. Pandora lost my confidence when I wasn't able to surf to it from Hong Kong. No that I'm in NYC, I really didn't use it anyway.

@Darkest Daze: Yes, I was so freaked out that Pandora might close down, that I forgot to check on the foreclosure of my house... /sarcasm
Seriously, am I the only one who thinks lawmakers should be concentrating on how not to make a bigger clusterfuck of the economy, rather than worrying about Internet radio?!

Is there a list of which members of congress voted for/against this act? I'd be curious to see who supported it, and who was against it.

@blackmage439: You arent the only one. But that doesnt make you 100% justified. There are a load of those ...erm... "people" working on the economy already. Theres like over 500 of them, and honestly, too many cooks spoil the broth. So while a number of them are working on the economy, its good that others are doing other things so that other issues arent completely ignored.

@wiregr: It was a voice vote, so this info isn't available.
"In legislative bodies, a voice vote is a decision-making process in which those present make their opinions known orally as a group, rather than standing or dividing to be counted. This means that there is no formal record of who voted in support and voted against the measure under consideration..."

@blackmage439: We don't need a bailout...what these politicians who embraced the free market a few weeks ago want is marxism! They didn't pass the bailout monday, and the consequences were supposed to be instant armageddon, and they weren't. the market will correct itself...

@blackmage439: This can be a game-changer in the industry in the future of radio. The economy clearly is important, but this was highly necessary.
As for the potential foreclosure of your home, perhaps you shouldn't have bought one outside your means so you could, you know, actually pay your bills.

Not bad, and while the MAFIAA and it's co-conspirators conspire with their conspiracy to bite the hand that feeds, what are the unintended consequences of government involvement here that will make us all hate the bill?
