Panasonic Smart Home Probably Won't Try to Kill You like HAL 9000
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 8:00 AM on October 5, 2008
Panasonic demoed their Smart Home concept at CEATEC this week. Smart Home seems to be an integrated system that controls the electronics in your house, from lighting to air conditioning to multimedia. Even the television will slide to follow you around, which actually looks sort of creepy and desperate.
The mirror isn't a mirror at all but a huge touch-based LCD equipped with cameras, so you can touch icons of clothes and see an animation of how you would look without having to try them on. This is the first step towards robopocalypse, if you ask me, but the models in their pristine all-white apartment don't look too scared.

HAL 9000? I would've thought you would've went for the Ultrahouse 3000, from The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XII.

The moving TV made me laugh. The last time I looked into any moving TV thing they were in the $3000+ range. For that price I'll just buy another TV or 2.

Having the TV follow you around is weird. Thinking about going to the bathroom and having something follow you?
Besides that it would be pretty cool to have the lights in your hall way automatically turn on and dim when you go to the bathroom at 1 am. Not to mention having your TV pause when the phone rings.

I have had a similar idea going in my head, but then again, what geek hasn't?
I think houses like this need their own avatars so you can interact with them in a much more awesome way. (Think "Jarvis" from the Iron Man Movie, but with a digitally modeled body)

@Jeice: With pretty tatas, long black hair, and a knack for wearing nothing?
Yeah, I think we're on the same page.

The mirror thing was so fake it made me laugh. The mirror image starts to move and then the actress moved to mimic it, not the other way around. You can see this obviously when it stretches or whatever and she takes like 5 seconds to start doing it.

More like... the people follow the TV, not the other way around.

What about Demonseed? Anyone remember that about the super computer that rapes the creators wife to replicate itself?

@jakeyjohn1: "Thinking about going to the bathroom and having something follow you?"
Ever have kids? I had a two year old who would wait outside the bathroom door, slipping notes and toys underneath it until I finished.

@dead_red_eyes: Great episode, but not everyone can make obscure Simpsons references...like half of my friends :(

I'd rather have the push-button control panel that Daffy Duck installed in Elmer Fudd's home, complete with the Red Button you push in case of a tidal wave.
(Just don't forget to have them install the Blue Button to get you back down!)
