On a Gigantic Swing, Man Fulfills Complete Flip Dream of a Million Kids
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:00 AM on October 9, 2008
When you were a kid using the swings at recess, you always would get just high enough to feel the chains go slack at the top. You always imagined getting so high that you'd go completely around the top bar and come down on the other side, but it always seemed like an unattainable goal. An impossible dream, if you will. Well, now we have proof that if you have balls of steel, it's possible to do the fabled full loop. Good god, this is a terrifying video. [CollegeHumor]

No chains, and the guy's legs are almost certainly bound to the step also. You can see that his anchor is on his feet and not his arms when he's at the apex of the turn.

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E: Right, either you have enough momentum to maintain tension on the chain, or you don't.
Usually you don't. In the case of this guy swinging, he definitely did not have enough momentum.

@noone1569: I think they need to re-visit that one. The crash test dummies may have the weight of a human but they still cannot duplicate a live person in the swing. Body shifting back and forth, legs pumping. And they fired the rocket while the dummy was stationary. They should have pushed the swing and given it a head start. Grant needs to build some crazy leg swinging robot and try this again.

@noone1569: While the show is great and a ton of fun to watch, their methods are often not very scientific since they are in the business of entertaining, not scientific fact. There are a number of ways you could achieve the fabled full rotation, but none of them could really be considered swinging.

Pussy. Do it on a steel chain-link swing next time. Oh yeah, and not back-asswards either.
Mythbusters proved you could do it, but only with a rocket strapped to your ass to keep momentum up in the arc.

@noone1569: With enough thrust you could do it no problem....
Did they use bottle rockets? It seems if you have enough thrust going radially inward toward the center point (enough to counteract the weight of the person, swing, chains) you could do this no problem as the person would never fall!

@mcg1969: Mythbusters found that you can doa full 360 on a chain swing, but you had to be going 36 ft/sec. On a rigid arm swing, it's relatively easy, as you only need to be going 10 ft/s.
They needed rockets, providing 400 lbs of thrust, to get a 65lb dummy over the top of a swing with shortened chains.

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E:
You'd never get that far with a chain swing unless you could produce the extra momentum to get from the height of the bar to going over it in one pass. Once you start getting higher than the bar, you'll drop straight down into the chains, constantly dumping any gained momentum. The only way you'll get high enough to hit the bar is if you've got _really_ short chains, like in a backyard store-bought set, and judging by the one my neighbors had when I was growing up, you might tip the whole thing over before you get quite that high.

The only way I could ever see it being possible with a chain swing is if maybe the chain connection point was forced horizontally with the swing at the right time. In other words: Swing on a rolling platform with an outside harmonic force of some sort. Do that and you might be kinged as the biggest geek in the world. And probably lucky to be breathing afterwards.

The reason they weren't able to do a full rotation on MythBusters with the rockets (and i remember this from only ever watching that episode once quite a while ago) is because chains don't have enough stability to both keep the rockets propelling the swing in a complete circle, and... well.... because it was on chains. Fairly certain that little thing known as gravity won't let a full rotation on a chain swing happen.

@rjp: yea, but what would make it even more suspenseful would be if they made it so that the truck had a customized rear towing mechanism for designed to hold the treadmill in the air and hold enough weight, so if the guy even stopped for one break, the treadmill would lunge him into the street, and he would land at about the speed of the truck and the treadmill's belt combines, which wouldn't be too great for the runner. It would be funny though. OH, and for those of you thinking there would be an emergency stop system on the treadmill like pretty much every treadmill made today, this one wouldn't have one, no. It would instead speed up if you were lagging behind, which would make somebody who stops go even further!

holy crap thats alot of negative comments on a video... were you people offended by the fact that u were dumb enough to assume that the guy did a 360 on chain swing or did u not notice the GIGANTIC part... which only makes it like 20x more impossible than a normal chain swing
im pretty sure the main appeal of this video is the sheer size of the swing... not the rod style of it, im getting real sick of people bitching about something that didnt make them give a standing ovation or die laughing... just quit whining already
