Nvidia Launch Points to Possible October 14 MacBook Intro
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:47 AM on October 3, 2008
It seems like the stars are aligning for that rumoured MacBook intro event on October 14. Nvidia, which was supposed to launch their MCP7A chipset on September 30, has announced the chipset will actually be available right after the alleged Apple event. Apparently, the new chipset--which is rumoured to be part of the new MacBooks--bests Intel's own G45 in the graphics and audio department.
The built-in audio and video capabilities in the new Nvidia chipset is supposed to be better than Intel's offering for High Definition video decoding, with 24p mode (progressive 24 frames per second video) and LCPM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) multi-cannel audio support. [Homemedia via Macsoda]

It'd be nice if Apple at least tried to be competitive and put the new 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS into a sub $1000 notebook. It kills me that you can't get a discrete graphics card in a Mac without spending at least $2000, and frankly in these leaner times, I think Apple could take a hit from other manufacturers who are producing far faster hardware for much less money.

I am pretty sure the MCP7A is meant for desktop motherboards...

If it was happening youd think that people would be notified, as to get some sort of notice to have some sort of coverage over the event, its two weeks away now and nothing, just photoshoppers mucking up the good name of apple.

I've started to become suspicious of the alleged event.
We all know that the Apple portables are overdue for a refresh, but the rumor mills have been silent for about 48 hours.
Did anyone hear about any "Cease & Desist" letters after the "Brick" rumor?

From what I've read, the recent issues were due to TSMC advising nVidia to use a cheaper soldier when putting their chips into laptops. There wasn't anything wrong with the actual chip, the soldier would become brittle when heated and cooled in quick, rapid bursts (turning a laptop off and on throughout the day) and then the soldiering would crack, slowly separating the chip from the motherboard.
That's all the info I've dredged up so far.

Aah! I have put off getting a new MBP for SO long. I even borrowed a family member's old iBook for the first month of college, but that things is starting to crush my soul. I really hope October 14th is the date. I've held out so long but I'm beginning to cave.

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E: Well, they did adjust the specs for manufacturing to fix the issue, and it only occured in 8000 series graphics chips, right?
If it's an all new chip you don't know if they're problematic or not.

If this doesnt, make anyone speculate a little more or release some new MacBook Pro mock up, I dont know what will, and with all this speculation, still no one has recieved invites to the event, or anything? Makes me just want to give up and get the current MBP.

@Jeremy Hill: the HP that came out yesterday is about the same size as a MacBook but manages to get the NVIDIA card in there. And all for less than a grand. I understand what you're saying, but I just can't understand a mentality of "we can't put that in our MacBook because that's what goes in our MacBook Pro" argument - it doesn't recognize outside competition, which Apple has to do if they're going to increase market share.

@weatherman: true but at the same time, the motherboard would most likely have to be a bit bigger, thus a complete redesign would be implace, and the higher end laptops would have to have some sort of compensation for having the same graphics as the sub $1000, what that would be Im not quite sure, but itd be a hit on apple either way, unless they come up with something that differentiates the higher end models from lower end with the same graphics card.

@weatherman: True, but that would make all their laptops more or less equal, minus screen size, bluetooth, and outer shell, if their going to compete, I agree that they need to up their game, but if they do it in terms of graphics cards for the Macbook series, then their going to have to give the pro's a bump up of their own, otherwise itll just be like the Playstation 2 and PS2, the latter being thinner smaller and just as good, makes people wonder why they ever bought the original in the first place, why by bigger clunkier when you could get smaller compact with the same performance.

Russ Meyers would roll over in his grave if he knew his 1965 Vixen Flick title would be used to promote any video (card) other than his own. Not to mention, the chicks in his movies are way hot!

@Jeremy Hill: a valid point, especially since there doesn't seem to be a video card they could stick in the Pro that would beat the 9300M right now.

I wonder what ATi is doing on mac front lately. I mean look at HD4000 series, it's kinda rocking the desktop. And it's known that ATi chips work wonders on OSX, coreImage and stuff. Just hunt for HD3870's performance numbers over 8800GT on Mac Pro, 8800GT may take over 3870 in PC world, but on Mac it's beaten blue by 3870.
I would take ATi anytime over nVidia in macs, believe it.

@weatherman: @iGo: As the owner of a macbook pro with an ATI x1600, and a desktop w/ HD4850, I have to aggree. my MBP holds its own considering its age (over 2 years) and the 4850 flies. I have a feeling AMD is probably pretty tepid about providing a solution to an intel-based product.
