Nintendo Points Are Non-Transferable Between the Wii and the DSi
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:40 AM on October 8, 2008
By rebranding "Wii Points" into "Nintendo Points" you would think that a system would be in place to share points between the Wii and the upcoming DSi. But that is where you would be wrong. Simply put, the points are locked to a single system—they cannot be transferred. That is a real bummer—especially because I have a few hundred points that have been collecting dust on my Wii for months now. [Siliconera via Wiifanboy]

on the subject of the DSi i dont think its supposed to be a complete successor of the DS so the lack of GBA port is excusable and i imagine the DSi games not working on DS has to do with them using the camera or maybe even the Sd slot in some way, and probably the different software it uses. though the DSi costing more is inexcusable. Now on the subject of nintendo points being non transferable is just stupid if im not mistake the ds can connect to the wii and they could just redo the wii store so that the ds stuff and wii stuff is all there and you can just redeem the points in one place

@daftrok: And don't forget that we don't get it until God-knows-when next year while Japan gets it next month...
... fuck Nintendo.

@Clockw0rk: To be fair, although they come online last, they at least have a wireless card in their console. (fucking 360)

Every post I read about Nintendo makes me want to hide all of my money from them. They seem to make some terrific products but really shoot themselvs in the foot on customer service and satisfaction. makes me glad the last thing I paid them for was a Game Boy Advanced.

First they alienate customers by having DSi games that won't work on the DS. Then they get rid of the GBA port without any form of adapter announced. THEN they price it MORE than the DS. And THEN they release it simultaneously with the DS. Now they're making points non transferable? Have they learned nothing from the mistakes that Sony and Microsoft made? At least Sony's PSP added functionality that can be replicated amongst the other iterations (with the exception of TV-out). This is inexcusable on Nintendo's part.

Nintendo knows how to do niche/gimmick hardware. They held onto carts longer than anyone, held onto proprietary disks which held less content (and still didn't curb piracy), and finally came online dead last.
It's really no surprise that when they finally figure out how to do the online store across multiple products, they do it poorly.
The only thing Nintendo has left is exclusive intellectual properties that gamers love. Casual gamers may have signed up for Wii sports/fit/music, but the people who continue to buy software are there for Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Brawl and co.
Nintendo could become a software-only company like Sega did and peddle their wares on the other platforms and the majority of gamers would applaud not having to keep their dusty Wii around for the occasional worth playing.
I'm a Wii and DS owner.. and I can confidently say that Nintendo is "past it". Time to step down from the hardware/infrastructure game. Or at least improve enough to stop screwing your base.

@Clockw0rk:
Nintendo should stop making niche/gimmick hardware? Maybe you have been living under a rock the past few years, or maybe you are just an idiot, but damn.
Nintendo is making money on its hardware, and has been from the start -- something Sony and MS cannot claim. The DS and the Wii have consistently outsold competing MS and Sony products worldwide month after month and Nintendo has made billions and billions of dollars in the process.
I don't disagree that this is a stupid move by Nintendo, as was region-locking the DSi, but to say that Nintendo is "past it" in the hardware game is just outright foolishness, at least from a business/sane person perspective.

Why?
This makes absolutely no sense.
Oh well, it's not like I'll ever buy a DSi to use the shop.

Have people forgotten simple things where you get something that is tide to ONE online account or one PC. Lets see you can only install one copy of a game or lets say windows one PC. the points are tied to One system. Just like many other companies have done. but everyone wants to flame Nintendo for following excepted practices. They are Nintendo points and can be used on one Nintendo system, not shared between you and your friends systems

This seems to be a common problem with the current consoles. You say, "It would be cool if..." and they say, "No."
Then after the competition eventually follows through they allow it. just do it from the beginning and be a leader!
(and I'm not talking JUST about these Nintendo points)

@regnez: Yes from a business standpoint they are making a ton of money so you are correct they won't be stepping down from games systems for a long time to come.
But the original post is not off base. Their systems are designed with backwards thinking. They haven't made a really innovative game since Smash Bros on the N64. And their newest IP Pikmin wasn't all that great. They have very little intention of pleasing their old fanbase it seems and are more content to release crappy tech demos to show off their newest attachment.
Nintendo has lost my support as a gamer with their current generation so far. Maybe if they can get their heads out from between their legs i will go back. But with news like this all i see is them putting it in farther.

LOL Wut?
/people are complaining that points can't be transferred from their home console to their own handheld system. IE, one person, no friend involved.
/also, points == the virtual currency used to buy downloadable games. So I don't see WHY you shouldn't be able to transfer said points to a friends account if you wanted to.

Um guy...calm down a little.
Remember, there is no online system like xbox live for Nintendo.
Your Wii and your Ds/DSi have System Codes not gamertag/username. There is no way to link either one right now to a single system so how the hell would they be able to tack Nintendo points to a person unless they completely overhaul their online setup.

@Zarian: Everything you say is true, and it makes sense that they couldn't have combined their setup without overhauling it. However after seeing the Xbox Live system (I don't own an Xbox) I really think Nintendo should consider overhauling it for their next gen console. This current method just doesn't make me feel all that connected to anything. Perhaps that was their intent all along, to keep the children safe in some way, but .. eh enough rambling. You're right, but I guess we wanted some break in Nintendo's schizophrenic online ecosystem.

And for the record, given the current state of economic affairs... I would like to assert that business != sanity.

I was thinking that this was (new DSi) a clever ploy to get DS users (like myself) to stray away from homebrew... but they just keep redundantly stalemating themselves with these limitations. I'll stick to homebrew on the DS and the Wii.
