Nintendo Offers Solution to Wii Storage Problem, Uses Wii Points to Lure Users Onto the Net
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 3:53 PM on October 2, 2008
More from the Nintendo Press Conference: the company will let you download games onto SD cards on the Wii, starting Spring 2009. Yes, you'll have to wait another four or five months before you get to unclog the Wii's paltry HD, but at least it's something right? Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also talked about an initiative to get more people using the Internet features of the Wii. The company will release a new Wi-Fi adaptor (possibly with mesh networking capabilities) and offer you 500 free Wii Points if you help a friend get connected. [Kotaku]

Wii doesn't have a paltry HDD of any kind. It has flash memory, 512MB IIRC. But we know what you meant...
You can already store games and whatnot on SD cards today, but you need to copy content back to the internal flash mem before accessing it. This update removes that step and would allow direct access to the card. Good solution.

Just read on Engadget that the Wii only supports SD cards up to 2 GB. While an excellent solution, I'm sure a lot of people would want just one huge card they can pop into the Wii and just forget about it.
Then again, the extensive time I had with a Wii wasn't messing with it's storage features, so maybe the Wii takes up very little space with it's files and such.

I'm down with free points, but not even getting back half the points spent on Megaman 9 would get me to use the Wii for internet.
If I'm using the Wii, I'm home. And if I'm home, I have my computer waiting right here with all the webnets I need.
Now, since the channel and Wiimote are intended to have a television-ish feel... if I could stream videos from my workgroup...
that would be nice. Maybe I could cure my XBMC addiction.

Why haven't they done this since launch? Seriously...

@Anticitizen: I wonder if its because Ninty decided to not pay the extra money for a HCSD slot, and just going for a regular one instead.
(afaic non HC SD cards tops out at 2GB)
While I can understand their reasoning for cutting costs, not being able to slot in a 64GB SD card into my Wii and never having to worry about swapping cards is a real letdown.
Then again, for the price of a SD card that size I could buy another Wii, or two, or three.

Apple announces anything and Giz turns on all the bells and whistles, liveblogs, 731 posts, and stickies it for all to see for the next week.
Any other 'player' in the gadget world [like the big N] announces and... meh, not so much.

Why don't they fix their hardwire ethernet connection dongle? The silly thing won't work behind an Adtran NAT router, how broken is that?

@TheLostVikings:
nearly all SD hardware is SDHC capable by simply a driver update.
I'm fairly confident they could update the box to read SDHC cards just fine.

@edmicman: I have a feeling it may be due to memory limitations. After all, Wii only has 88 Megabytes of usable system RAM. Plus the CPU is allegedly only 729 Mhz so certain codecs may be too much for it.

You want me to use more internet features on the Wii? Then upgrade the damn Flash player. YouTube works, but most every other flash video player site I try is broken. Hulu, PH, RT, YP, etc....are they all wrong or can't Nintendo get Opera and Flash to get their s- together?

@Anticitizen: I remember reading somewhere that indicated that the limitation was probably more software than hardware. If that is the case then a software update should fix that.

@Nintenboy01: No, it's due to the fact that the Internet channel hasn't been updated since the Wii's release, and still uses Flash 8.
I swear, I've got half a mind to try my hand at porting OWB to Wii Homebrew...

@Jhwk: Well, let's be fair. They did liveblog on Android... mostly so they could crap on it.
