Nintendo DSi Not Coming To US Until 'Well Into' 2009
Posted by Adrian Covert at 2:25 AM on October 3, 2008

Here at the Ninendo Media Summit in San Francisco, NOA President Reginald Fils-Aime stated that the Nintendo DSi would not make an appearance in the US until "well into calendar year 2009." He cited the popularity of the current DS Lite as the primary reason for the prolonged release of the new system. For those (like me) still clunking away on the original DS, the wait just got a little more tortuous.
AU: Great. That pretty much means 2010 for Australia. (Not really, but it will feel like that).

Maybe it's just me, but it seems stupid for NIntendo to wait till 2009 to release this. Who in their right mind would purchase a DS Lite NOW knowing that a new one with many more features will be out in a few months. Seems a little stupid to me.

@LazyPanda: This is for people that have yet to buy one and make it more attractive, since they probably don't have big stocks of the old one, why do you wanna buy another? just to get a camera, mp3 player, SD card support and downloadable games and a official store for the homebrew creators to sell their work??
I will get one, but you don't have to.

@Seinosuke:
You less than 3 Nintendo, don't you? I actually more or less describing myself who will most likely buy this thing even though I did all the described actions of my first comment. I'm a sucker for blue.

@LazyPanda: SD card support (which will definitely be fooled around with my someone to make it play ROMs and homebrew and such), and a wi-fi download store.

I wonder if the DS Lite will see a price cut in the US prior to the DSi release.

@tridtaei: Chill, dude. If you don't like it, don't buy it. I highly doubt that the fact that Nintendo announced this instead of something omg-i'm-shitting-my-pants amazing is really shattering your world THAT much. Take a deep breath, and move on.

I dunno. I've got a lite and I don't see any reason at all to upgrade to this. My cellphone has a better camera, the screen is perfectly big enough for me on my current DS and I happen to really like the long battery life.
Were there any other reasons to get this one?

what does the "i" stand for? "i" got a sh#tty camera? "i" made the smallest improvements to a game system that already has been update once? "i" will soon be available in other colors so you freaks can sell back your basic white one for a blue one in 6 months.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: Did you really get THAT used to playing your DS for 15 to 19 hours straight? Just charge it when you're not using it. Problem solved.

@JEmlay: I know it isn't explicitly mentioned in the owner's manual, but the DS is not to be used as a spare hockey puck.

The first DS Lite was not region locked, so i bought it almost a year before it was released in the US (and still have and play it everyday). i wonder if this one will be region-free as well? (fingers crossed)

Well that sucks! I've gone through FOUR NDSLs and even my fourth one is broken. All 4 have had completly dead shoulder buttons. I got it swaped out three times under warranty and refuse to spend more money on another one UNLESS they improve it. Well, here it is and now I have to wait "WELL INTO" 2009?

@firteen888: Someone who doesn't want the cameras, thinks its ugly, wants a GBA slot and wants a DS thats not $180?

Lets hope retail outlets post pre-order signs to thwart Nintendo's plans of pushing off the Lite to unsuspecting customers... The "core" gamer knows about it... but the "casual gamer" is their prey...

If someone thinks it's ugly, then they would think the DS lite is ugly as well. It looks exactly the same.

Although a crappy camera on my portable game player sounds very useful, I think I am going to stick with my current DS lite.

isn't the camera 3MP? with the smaller one being 0.3MP (VGA)?
3MP doesn't sound that bad at all. i understand the "More MP = More BETTER!!!" inanity... but has anyone seen any shots from it? know anything about the optics? the chip? anything other than the MP count?

@firteen888: No. They are similar. Not exactly the same. That camera looks cheap just like its tacked onto the outside of the DSi when folded IMO. The thing isn't glossy (glossy is in whether you like it or not). The overall build just looks and reaks of cheaper plastic.

I still have the DS fat, and the touch screen is completely messed up. The horizontal location of the touch is off by roughly half a centimeter depending on where on the screen I touch. I bought it (Japanese version) a month or so after its release, so it's been with me for quite a while now.
So this is good news for me: Either I could buy the DSi (I think they might have the Japanese version in HK when I go there! Unless it's already sold out by then), or I could hope for a major price drop on the DS Lite.

Being Nintendo, they'll probably claim the "i" stands for "improvement, intelligence and influencial".
Can't they just say the i stands for iPod design cues? (I'm a DS fan but Nintendo piss me off sometimes, and i'm not an apple fan. at all.)

3MP camera on the DS is higher resolution that the 2MP on the iPhone. I wonder how good the music player will be. Maybe I'll ditch my iPod and use this as my camera, music, game, wi-fi all-in-one. Will it play movies?
