New MacHeads Movie Trailer Keeps Freaking Me Out
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:30 AM on October 16, 2008
Kobi and Ron Shely, the producers of MacHeads, have released a new movie trailer coinciding with yesterday's MacBook 2008 event. In case you don't know about it yet, the movie is a documentary on the almost-religious fervour that some Mac users feel towards their computers and Apple. Yes, the one that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak dislike so much (with good reason). It looks like it may be a good one to watch, however, even while the new trailer freaks me out even more than the previous one. [MacHeads via Cnet]

Wow. I love Macs, but damn it if I'm to be labeled as one of those people... Ironically it was the users (my Mac friends) that kept me from switching for the longest time, they used to get really annoying with the "oh Windows, did you remember to update your anti virus?".
Now, when I feel like praising the OS, you start by saying how Windows is great (get their attention), then explain that although Windows is great, OSX is much better. Every now and then throw an "I wish Macs had [feature than Windows has]" so that I don't loose them, and make my whole presentation look unbiased.
Or you can go with "Don't you get tired of viruses?" and see if people switch that way.

This pretty much sums up a lot of my co-workers and social media friends. All work stops whenever Steve gets up for his quarterly 'events' (aka his sermon on the mount.) After that there's a lot of ooohing, aaahing, blogging and Twittering about whatever was discussed. And then of course there's the subsequent field trip to the Mac store to buy the latest iWhatever. More power to them I guess as they seem to get a kick out of it and I like seeing my friends happy. But it's more than a little creepy sometimes from the outside looking in.

When is this thing coming out? I remember seeing a trailer (which I think was this one) quite a while ago. And their showing Macword 2007.
That's the problem with doing movies about technology. By the time it hits the theaters, the technology has become dated.

@Ron-Mexico: I feel compelled to show people the advantages of one OS over the other when people ask me for advice on buying a new computer.
I'm a .Net developer, so I'm stuck with Windows for work, but for personal use, I don't even think about using Windows. When I'm off to play games, I never even think about running Leopard.
I used to think just like you do, before I actually bought and used my first Mac. And most Windows users that don't get why Macs are better (more expensive) but much higher quality than PCs.
Ron, have you ever owned a Mac? If you say "I'm never going to be caught alive using a Mac", then you should never be caught alive bashing one either, since you have not enough information to make a valid argument.
Kinda like you knowing nothing about me, but still making an assumption that I'm just like the people highlighted in this film

You obviously don't like Macs, and that's an emotional attachment the way I see it.
And again, you're just assuming that every Mac user is emotionally attached to their machines.
Stop lumping all Mac users into a common stereotype and you will be fine. As a matter of a fact, that should work for any group of people.
FYI, that's what ticked me off, stereotyping. I don't care if you're an Apple user or a MS user, bashing each other over their OS or Laptop is just stupid, as you pointed out yourself. So please stop doing so.

@Alex7575: My first computer was an Apple ][c which I used for years. And I worked on them off and on for years back in the bad old days in the 90s before OS X. And I still use them VERY regularly at my office where it's 50/50 Macs/PCs (I'm on a Thinkpad.) They're nice machines for sure. But at the end of the day, they're all just machines. Even with a great user experience (which I get from most computers these days) I don't form any real emotional attachment.

@Alex7575: Hmm.. but are you not bashing MS by openly trying to get people to switch to mac? Also you seem to have embraced the apple's evangelical philosophy completely. I only say this because it seems (by your first comment) that you go out of your way to keep other OS users attention while you attempt to fill them with apple propaganda.
I honestly never have and never will get the "Mac Thing" and I'm very happy that way. I use them when I have to, but I've never found them to be "better" in any way. They have some strong points, but they also have just as many weak points. I just can't ever imagine myself creaming my pants over a mediocre laptop like most Mac users do. Frankly it's the whole "we are better than you" attitude that really turns me away. IMO in order to have an attitude like that, you better be, hands down, the best and I can assure you NO computer or OS is hands down the best.
Bottom line, IMO, the whole "Mac Movement" is a PR scam that has run out of control. I wouldn't be surprised if you find some MacHeads praying to or even having sex with their computers.

If the person is completely computer illiterate and has tons of cash and just wants to surf the net and do basic stuff, I'd recommend a Mac.

@KLanD: Being the curmudgeonly snipe that I am, I generally oppose things simply to get at others, like being one of the few NYers that root with Boston Red Sox fans to piss off zealous relatives.
But on the computer end, the industrial design, layout and details can appeal to the various tastes of others. I generally recommend Macs to people for the reasons I like them for, but will gladly point someone to a PC if I see that they're more budget conscious and have other requirements that may steer them in that direction.
But a more interesting question would be: If someone were to ask you for advice on a computer, would you recommend a Mac, after considering that these may be the optimal system for him/her, or would you just stick firmly to what you like, simply because you don't like the alternative?

Oh yawn..... This mac verse windows or linux debate is so last season. They're machines that perform a task. If you don't like mac, don't buy mac... if you don't like windows don't buy it either. If a mac nut becomes all evangelical tell them to sod off! If a windows user insists on telling you how useless mac is compared to their Os they can easily bugger off too. Use whatever the hell you like to use... it's personal choice. I use mac. It suits my needs, but I'm not about to get into a penis measuring contest over some hardware and software.
As for the movie it looks funny. It does make all of us mac users look like a bunch of nuts.... but I'm thinking any mockumentry that you pre-decide is going to have a certain slant you can easily edit it so you only use the interviews from the crazies... you could just as easily find a few nuts who use other Os's. I have a mate who is so passionate about linux that he preaches about it quite often... to the point that it's creepy. I think for sure their are mac users who should probably keep their opinions to themselves... I think it is a great product so I can understand why they get excited about it.... but to each their own.

I hate Apple fanboys/fangirls. They will defend ANYTHING apple does. I own an Iphone and I built a hackintosh, and I still hate Steve Jobs attitude and the way he will treat his employees. Just take for example yesterday, at the macbook pro demonstration of the unibody design, he got angry at the people in the back, impatient with them for taking his time up. They could be potential customers and want to see your product Jobs, and you're going to be mad with them? (he was a little mad, he just didn't seem it because he was trying not to look so in front of everybody) He still isn't that great of a CEO because of this. And most of all I hate the fanboys, as I've explained before. They say they are so open-minded, but they are only open minded to what jobs or Apple says or comes out with. They would never consider using something like a Zune, a laptop by another company or something rather like those items. They will only get something from Apple if there is an alternative, even a better and cheaper item in some cases.

PS. This "we're a family" because of a prodcut stuff needs to stop. Period. I'm not really against consumerism, but people, we've gotta stop assigning real emotions to things, brands, whatever!
If something works for you, great, but this whole "us versus them" and "we're in this together" as a straight-up consumer of a manufactured product needs to cease. It's exactly what companies WANT you to do... to get some bizarre emotional attachment to their brand, to their product, so that they can shovel crap to you and you'll pay more than its worth (because then you're part of the family).
GM tried doing this with Saturns and their "family picnic" BS, Nintendo has done it coming out of their underdog generation with the GameCube, and Apple's been doing it since they actually made a product everyone wanted, the iPod.
Just... stop buying into it. Please. Buy what works for you. Don't act like it's your personal savior.

I don't *hate* Apple.
I don't like many of their products, but that's personal preference. But, I'm glad to see someone taking the fanatics to task Trekkies style over their obsession with the brand.
I think it's funny to go to a place like Austin, TX, hit a cafe in the middle of the day, see the young white kids with dreadlocks in dirty skinny jeans, t-shirts with ironic slogans or indie bands on them, and watch them unload their cache of Apple items to do... nothing.
Ask these same kids about multi-national corporations, and they'll tell you they're evil, and destroying our way of life. Meanwhile, they click along on their aluminum and white-slathered, overpriced electronics made by (gasp) a corporation.
So, there it is. I don't hate Apple, it's just not for me. I do hate the utter self-righteous hypocrisy that most fans indulge in to act like Apple is the "fourth" part of the Holy Trinity and Steve Jobs is its prophet.

They put up with the ugly and amazingly crappy Windows UI and make fun of anyone who prefers a better user experience. Nobody is more closed-minded than a PC fanboy.
