New MacBook 2008 Alleged Aluminium Case Photos Hit the Web
Posted by Jack Loftus at 4:18 AM on October 13, 2008
Chinese blog MacX is showing some very legit looking pics of what they allege is the MacBook Pro casing today. We will have to wait for the MacBook 2008 event this week to see if it is real or not, but they are crystal clear and in line with both series of previous leaked images.

ok looking at the 2nd and 3rd pics closesly I noticed a few differences!!! for examle in the 2nd pic the placement of the first 2 ports differs from the 3rd pic!!! In the second pic the larger square port comes first then followed by the smaller square port!! Where as the 3rd pic its the other way around!!!
Also in the 2nd pic after the 2 small round (audio?) ports there is a large rectangular opening which is missing from the third pic and it seems to have been replaced by what looks like a firewire port on the 3rd pic!!!
so either thses 2 casings R from 2 different models of a laptop or totally fake pics because they do NOT match!!!!
Please correct me if Im wrong!!!!

One is probably a 15 inch mac pro and the other the 17 inch mac pro

Possible differences could be one is a Macbook and the other top section for a Macbook Pro.

@halozcalling: I REALLY hope they do not migrate the Pro keyboard over to the standard MBA keyboard. For someone who does any amount of typing, the Pro keyboard is so much nicer, without foolish gaps between the keys. It doesn't work ergonomically (for me anyways.)
If they change the keyboard, I guess I'm going to be keeping my current MacBook Pro for a very long time... (Actually, I'll be keeping it a long time anyways.)

I think this is a big deal for the Pro, the design looks more simple than the previous generations assuming the keyboard will be black and not aluminum punched out squares ([www.apple.com]) Even the speaker and power button look more simple. And supporting the brick rumor, there doesn't look like there are any screws on the sides like the current macbook pro.

@jozen: My guess is that they are getting rid of DVI for HDMI (Micro HDMI specifically). You probably already know this but for people that don't, DVI is video only while HDMI can carry video and audio. It would make a lot more sense if you're trying to hook your laptop up to a large TV without having to run two wires.

Those edges look painfully sharp. I'd be worried about cutting myself.
Who else noticed (more visible in some of the other pics) that there is a very obvious division between the upper half (keyboard) and lower half (trackpad) of the hollowed-out part? Would this be part of the implementation of the larger battery that we've seen in some older spy shots?

There are more photos on the original site, one of which shows the keyboard and trackpad in place. The keyboard clearly has the apple trademark "Command" icon.
Also, the plasticized look of the casing is due to the self-sticking vinyl sheet affixed, probably for handling purposes during the manufacturing process.
These are definitely not fake. Gizmodo should show all photos from macx.cn

Second from the bottom pic, far left port, with a white tape or something covering it. That's a new port, immediately left of the track pad. Weird, as that's usually where the HDD is. The size and shape is similar to an eSATA port. Hmmm. Weird location, though, anyhoo.

Absolutely awful. Looks like the logic board is again [iBooks, older PowerBooks] going to be attached to the top case. At least, from the look of the ports being part of that top case Apple typically has the lb physically attached to that part.
So that means it's no longer an "easy" fix to replace your keyboard if something were to go wrong as the current models are now. Both MacBooks [not Air] currently have top cases that can be removed seperately and fairly easily. Both models have the ports on the bottom case, which has the lb attached to it.
For the Pro, the keyboard is seperate from that topcase, however, for the MacBook, when replacing the keyboard you get a whole new top case. For both, the trackpad is part of the top case so that gets replaced.
For the Pro, you had to remove the top case to replace your HDD. So, unless they completely redesign the interior as well to reflect that change, expect to have to completely remove the logicboard in order to get to that and other parts [optical drive].
Apple is a serious pain in the ass for technicians. The look is nice on the outside, but once inside everything is mashed together and difficult for even the technically inclined to work with. Kind of like how the old 12" PowerBook had to be completely taken apart to replace the optical drive.
Removing the current MacBook top case is no real peach either, though not that difficult once you've done it a few times. The Pro, while easier than the MacBook IMHO, had removable latches on two sides [bottom and right] that could be easily moved out of place and sometimes held together so tightly that the act of removing that top case would bow it and cause it to not come together "perfectly".
It just pisses me off, really. I would say that other than their "Pro" desktop towers and the original, pre-iSight iMac G5's, Apple specifically designs their machines to not be repaired or taken apart easily by the do-it-yourself-er. Once you do that, many times they do not go back 100% due to the difficulty of it.
With Apple, you pay a premium. Especially if you want the "convenience" of adding or replacing parts yourself which is indicated by their past and present towers.

what i want to see is a 270-degree clamshell with a screen on top and a keyboard on bottom and solar panels in between. So basically, you have it closed and it's a tablet. Then when you open it 2/3 of the way and lay it screen-down, it charges itself. and when it opens all the way... voila. you have your classic notebook style laptop.
knowing apple and their rapid technological advancement, this could be a possibility

I'm going to take a guess and say that the motherboard and all other internals will be mounted on a bottom case, and this case will just drop over the top of of. perhaps they want to make servicing easier ... just take off the top case and you've got access to all internal components.
