New Apple Notebooks May Start At $US800, Made From Actual Bricks
Posted by John Herrman at 8:31 PM on October 9, 2008
Amidst a flurry of alleged pictures and some wise words of caution, another Mac notebook rumour has surfaced: the Inquisitr claims that, according to their source, Apple's new line of notebooks will start at $US800 and come in twelve configurations. To put that into perspective, the current range is made up of eight price points, the lowest being $US1099. A $US300 drop in MacBook prices or the likely possibility of an entirely new model are both tantalising, but some are finding reason to be suspicious:
According to Macrumors, the leaker's claim that "retail outlets usually get the price lists 10 days before products hit the market" is simply not true, damaging his credibility. If the rest of the rumour holds, however, this means that the new notebooks are not just imminent, but coming out early next week. The wording of the rumour implies that the source is in retail and therefore probably wouldn't be the only guy to have gotten the new price list, so we'll look out for corroboration from other leaky types. I read a post on JKontherun about how JK thinks Apple can't afford to ignore the netbook. I tend to agree. If you can get a fully fledged OS (i.e., Windows XP) on a netbook for $400, you won't be inclined to get an Apple unless something is within range of that.

Most new laptops get 1 article showing them when they are announced. Apple laptops get 6 articles on the case design alone, and probably another 20 when the thing actually launches.

Damned straight they are!
At the moment Australian prices (where I'm living) are incredibly good. The lowest MacBook goes for $AU1499 (which is $US1,005), so I can only hope this keeps up.
Although the AU$ was almost toe-to-toe with the US$, but that's all been fudged with the current financial response.
Much better than not that long ago where it was less "Apple Tax" and more Foreigner Tax. I think the EU gets (or got?) a pretty bum deal, too.

I don't care if it's made from a brick of anything. But I do care about price.

@cobaltage: As popular as the Macbook Air is, I think it was a mistake to introduce it at a time when Netbooks were quickly becoming the "Next Big Thing".
For example, if they release a Netbook now, with really good configurations (as they should), then they have to be careful not to steer customers away from the pricier Macbook Air. After all, a Netbook offers almost exactly what the Macbook Air offers: Ultra-portability.
It'd be interesting.

The regular PC notebook equivalent for that $800 macbook will cost $500.
Which leaves us with $300 for beer.

Good!!!, after hitting hard the mobile phones market and the mp3 palyers market, the only front left is the computer market, something not very hard to do thanks to the windows Shitty-Vista.
This will also put the shut up to all those who claim Apple“s products prices as a reason for not buying them (yes guys, the iphone at $300 is soooooo expensive compared to a HTC at $600, you are right).
C'mooon Stevie, you can do it mannnnn

@macpro2007:
It's got a piece of plastic applied to it to keep it from scratching. Peel it off, and it's good to go.

this pic has to be photoshoped because if you look at the speaker its all glossy witch means that the holes are covered up witch will ruin the sound coming out of the speakers.

I'm no fanboy. I currently have 3 systems all running winxp, and i've dabbled in a bunch of nix distros, but this is pretty exciting. Only thing that has been keeping me from owning a mac is the price. I've done the whole osx86 thing to death, but it's not fool proof and sometimes the systems can be buggy. Definitely stoked if this is true.

@cobaltage: Another problem with the netbook would be the price bracket. Apple has their cheapest notebook at more or less USD 1000 with a full OS and all the bells and whistles, and the iPhone at 600, with a very much dumbed down OS and more buck than bang. There is simply not enough room now for a netbook, it would heavily cannibalize credibility (if not sales) from the (overpriced) iPhone.
If it were a netbook done right, it would offer a choice of SSD or 1.8" HDD, 1-4 GB, HSPDA, WiFi, bluetooth, card slot and OS X. Add an 8" screen, and it would be hard to justify a USD 200 price difference to an iPhone, let alone a USD 400 to every other netbook. Apple currently simply doesn't have the price slot.
Drop the iPhone to 400 in the 16 GB incarnation, offer a touchscreen-only (but full OS X) netboook with the other features mentioned above, and now you can justify the 700-800 USD price tag. At least to me:-D I would be over it as if it were Jessica Biel bathing naked in the swimming pool behind my house:-P
But Apple has a history of never listening to me:-(

@faunaman: If you ignore desktops, Apple are considerably dominant in the computing market.
In 2007 the market share rose to just under 18%, with only Dell and HP above them. Go Steve!

@Aturayd: And it's awesome!
It's time to set auto DVin' for obvious Apple complaints, I reckon. You could most probably get a bot to do it, as they all seem to follow three or four almost always identical themes.
