Mozilla CEO: First Firefox Mobile Alpha Release 'In a Few Weeks'
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 5:00 AM on October 7, 2008
When we saw Firefox Mobile in action a few months ago, it looked pretty snazzy, but we were a bit concerned by a few reports floating around that it might be a long wait to actually get our hands on it. Happily, that's not the case. Mozilla CEO John Lilly says that we'll see the first Firefox Mobile alpha releases "in a few weeks." Is anyone else psyched for Firefox Mobile and the start of a whole new browser war? I am pretty bummed that the iPhone won't be one of the battlegrounds though because of the SDK restrictions. this would be a great alternative to the G1's browser?

I would be excited for this, but I don't really use my browser much on my blackberry. I check out movie times and such every once in a while, but not often enough for the crappy blackberry browser to bother me.

Also bummed that this won't make it to the iPhone. Not that mobile Safari is bad, but competition is good!

Echoing my questions in the post about the impending update to WinMo IE: Flash support? Java support? Aside from overall usability and flow of UI, these are the points that will decide who rises and falls in the impending Mobile Browswer Wars.

I hope there's a blackberry version for this. What I'd like to see is a mobile version of VLC so I can play any files on my phone. If not for blackberry, at least for the G1... my next phone if I can get one.

I am Proximo! I shall be closer to you for the next few days, which will be the last of your miserable lives, than that bitch of a mother who first brought you screaming into this world! I did not pay good money for your company. I paid it so that I might profit from your death. And just as your mother was there at your beginning, I shall be there at your end. And when you die - and die you shall - your transition will be to the sound of...

Gladiators... I salute you.
That's what I feel like sometimes when I look at the closed platform Apple has us locked into on the iPhone...
PLEASE... firefox on cydia??

Correction, competition is required by law. It is a monopolistic practice to only allow Apple's browser on the iPhone and not Firefox.

Mozilla, please don't ignore the BlackBerry like all the other mobile browser developers (looking at you SkyFire).

Has anyone asked Apple if they'd allow Mobile Firefox on the AppStore? It seems like they'd take a major PR hit if they denied it.

@aqtrans: Whether it comes via the AppStore or jailbreak-style, I'm not gonna care. It'll be nice to port my Mozilla loyalty to mobile devices! Wee!

@aqtrans: Apple doesn't really care about PR hits. They'll get a couple of indignant posts on digg but coincidentally all of the forums where people would be outraged at are also full of fanboys.

Guys, I don't think there's going to be any iPhone port of Firefox, jailbroked or not. Mozilla said they're just not going to develop it.

Sure thanks for acting like the iPhone is the only phone in the world by mentioning that the iPhone won't get it. How about maybe, just maybe letting us know which phones and platforms WILL get it.

Thank you! I'm still trying to figure out if I can get this on my Blackberry. The BB browser and Opera both suck on my phone.

It's not mentioned in the post. For WHAT platforms will it be developed?!?
As a java applet, like the Opera Mini?
Android? Linux? WindowsMobile?

Does the dropping of the iPhone Developer's Non-disclosure Agreement have any bearing here?
