Motorola Working on Android-Based Social Networking Smartphone
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:20 AM on October 15, 2008
We already knew that Motorola was looking to resuscitate their mobile phone biz by developing for Android, but a recent job posting on Coroflot may have revealed a twist in their plans. The posting calls for an Interaction Designer "responsible for leading and actively participating in the concept, design, documentation and development of user interfaces for our mobile products including our new Android Social Networking SmartPhone."
So, it appears that Moto is going to actually try and develop an Android smartphone built around the concept of social networking. The buzz here is that going niche like this might help Motorola stand out from the avalanche of Android phones coming down the line. I couldn't agree more. But, of course, there has been no confirmation of Motorola's plans, and any real-world product is most likely in the early stages. [Coroflot via AndroidGuys via BGR]

If they got rid of that stupid moniker: Moto, shit would go well with them.

@ibelli: So that more people can be unemployed? For all you know, they might be working on a very innovative new product because of their desperation.

Motorola actually has some cool software technologies, it just seemed like they couldn't figure out how to properly implement them between their phone architectures... I am not at all surprised at the social networking integration rumor, and I'll leave it at that.

This could really save Motorola. Hardware was always their strong side. Software was always their week side. Android comes and problem solved!

What I'd really like to see is more carriers of Android phones.
As soon as I mentioned to my friends that I was considering a Gphone, I was bombarded with a bunch of "T-Mobile's network sucks!" commentary.
Which is technically true.

Too bad urgency is not the priority (get a well-made, good looking piece of Motorola hardware with current Android). It looks like Motorola will fidget with UI which will enable a sub-par UI team to delay an Android phone even further into the future so it is as late and out-of-sync with the market as the last ROKR.
Maybe the stock drop to all-time-lows was justified in this case.
