Motorola Q11 WinMo Smartphone Lacks 3G, Common Sense
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 10:05 AM on October 9, 2008
We've known that the Motorola Q11 (an update to the Q9) was in the works, but today Motorola made it officially known. Maybe I'm the last person you should listen to when it comes to this particular Windows Mobile line, but I don't even think Motorola cares about this baby. It does have the requisite Wi-Fi, GPS, microSD support up to 32GB, a 3-megapixel camera and the ability to read H.264-encoded video, but with the same tight 2.4-inch LCD and no 3G data connectivity, the rest is for naught. Unwired View predicts that this omission is a sign of a low price, still unannounced. Me, I just see it as another example of Motorola running around like a chicken with its head cut off. No 3G is lack of common sense?
When almost every nook of the United States that ISN'T a major city doesn't have 3G, I guess it could be common sense.
Seriously - what's so great about 3G (other than the data speeds) if it's not everywhere you go?
I was travelling abroad and I asked a friend what he gets for cellphone internet speeds. He simply replied "Broadband."
The US is lacking in its' network infrastructures.
And AT&T should *really* be improving its' coverage in the US instead of boasting how great they are if you travel abroad.

Oh, and how wonderful, still only 64MB of RAM...
Thats ok Motorola, we didn't want to run too many things in the background of a phone - especially when WinMo Smartphone ed. takes about 13MB or more just for its own resources...
Uhg... Disappointment... its like they are aiming for it.

Last statement really makes the whole thing with them...
how late do you plan on making it to the party (The party of big screens, nice UI and CPU speed) before you missed the boat...
How the hell do they think they can still stand on this Q series is beyond me - the Original Q was a little groundbreaking considering it was somethign different than RIM and it was at the begining at the whole free push-e-mail with Exchange 2007...
but now - its old - out of date - tired...

OMG! Ponies!

The Javelin also has no 3G. And given NYC's crappy 3G service, I'm not sure I'd miss it.

BTW wasn't there a 'bash the Q because its not the iphone' post a couple weeks ago?

The screen isn't centered on any of the Q models, the backlight is on the left.

I love how the screen isn't even centered. It's like someone threw it together in photoshop during his lunch break.

Isn't Motorola the company where a senior engineer wrote an anonymous letter to the Board detailing how they fucked up the company and completely lost their way due to Senior Executives taking the treasure chest and jumping ship?

So much hate for the iPhone. We bash the Q because it doesn't ship with 3G (not because it's not the iPhone), which is like a television not shipping with a remote control these days. Even the Q9h had 3G. And 3G coverage is getting pretty widespread. We have it here outside of Charleston WV. Not a large city by anyone's count (just over 50,000 people).

@djfoxx64: Seems to be a lot of wasted real estate on the face of this phone...

@djfoxx64: Because it's a Motorola Q.
I have a Q9C and while I really like the phone, the screen size leaves a lot to be desired.

Arg, no 3G???
....faaaaaaiiiillllll!!!!
Seriously, how can anyone consider this an upgrade to the current Q9 Global if it has LESS internal memory and no 3G? And, no, WiFi itself does not make it an upgrade. With decent 3G, WiFi is usually unnecessary.

The reason blackberries and iPhones are so cool is because they aren't the Motorola Q

3G is really nice but it doesn't kill a phone for not having it. When I'm out 3G often doesn't work. If the price is low, it would all be worth it right?
