Microsoft Settles on 'Windows 7' For Official Name of Next OS
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:00 PM on October 14, 2008
Here we were, thinking "Windows 7" was simply a codename (and a fairly boring one at that--where's Longhorn? Whistler?). Now, on the official Windows Vista Blog, MS has come out and declared "Windows 7" the official name of Vista's successor, dev-only pre-betas of which will be released at the upcoming WinHEC and PDC developer conferences. The reason why probably makes sense, to someone, somewhere...
The decision to use the name Windows 7 is about simplicity. Over the years, we have taken different approaches to naming Windows. We've used version numbers like Windows 3.11, or dates like Windows 98, or "aspirational" monikers like Windows XP or Windows Vista. And since we do not ship new versions of Windows every year, using a date did not make sense. Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista, while evolving and refining the substantial investments in platform technology in Windows Vista into the next generation of Windows.

Thank god. I am so sick of the names they come up with. They are starting to realize that to overcome the competition, they need to become the competition. Mac has OSX, and it will always be called OSX. I am so glad they didn't come up with some gay name. I mean, after "Longhorn" I felt like throwing up for some reason. Even though it was just beta. When I read about "longhorn" on Gizmodo years back, I thought it was a joke.

These rips on Windows and Balmer are getting a little old. Lets not forget 96 out of 100 people like and use Windows. The other 1 use Lynux, 3 Apple and 1 other. In fact, I'd bet 80 percent or more Mac users need to run Windows via Parallels just to get their work done. I don't think making fun of Microsoft all the time is as fashionable as seems to be assumed because time after time people buy and rebuy it. They must be doing something right even if their marketing is goofy. I'm running Vista 64 and although the first months after release it had issues, it kicks ass now. I wouldn't trade it and I can't wait for 7.

@token_y_chromosome: Well I am in Marketing, and I completely disagree with you. The Windows naming system has gotten increasingly more and more obscure, and it no longer means anything except for disappointment. Vista has had such a bad reception that Microsoft needs to find a way to "start fresh" in the minds of the consumer so that they venture into new OS territory. What better way for a fresh start than to go back to basics in terms of naming. This naming system is saying that THIS is the next generation of Windows.
It's no different than something like the Resident Evil series of games. After RE3, they had a bunch of unnumbered sequels and they got increasingly terrible and RE was earning a bad reputation that was starting to stick. When they finally put their foot down and took it seriously again, then finally RE4 was released.
A return to quality is what it represents.

@jopari: Leopard is just the codename for it, though. It will be 10.6. Apple actually has decent tablet compatibility and I highly doubt they will make a tablet computer anytime soon. That's been the rumor for at least 5 years now.
They have already stated that nothing "new" will be added to 10.6. It will mainly be optimizing their code to be Intel only and smooth out all that was released with 10.5. Hopefully making Time Machine not a ridiculous on-the-hour-every-hour backup solution that I find retarded; very few people need that often of a backup.
One simple setting to make it adjustable would be nice, but then again something so simple would confuse a hell of a lot of people and would allow too much configuration when Apple would much rather seal up the machine and not even allow ports on their computers for people to fuck it up their "flawless" design.
I sure love to hate Apple.

@vista64guy: I think a lot more people don't switch to OSX because of the "fear of learning something new" factor. I know plenty of people that would have bought a Mac had it not involved "re-learning" an OS. Not everyone is a computer guru—I switched because I was interested in learning a different OS without having to struggle with Linux; however, many people simply have no desire to do that, and thus end up buying the new version of Windows.
But I must say, excellent commentary. You are very correct.

Oh WOW! Thank so much for that bit of information, sir. That clears up EVERYTHING! By the way, it's TEN, not X. It's a roman numeral. You learned about that in grade school.
On second thought, I don't think I can handle them saying, "It's an oh-es-ex-eye [or oh-es-ex-one] computer." By the way people, it was never CompuSERVE [referring to CompUSA, or as I like, com-pu-ssay] and the Apple store across town is NOT the iTunes store, or the iPod store, or the iMac store. Please stop referring to it as such. And no, the new iPhone isn't the G3 [we had no less than 20 people on "that day" call it that].
And one final pet-peeve, please know what kind of laptop you have before buying a charger. Excuse me for thinking some asshole would know something so simple after spending $1000+ on a computer. You know you're car doesn't take diesel [at least I hope] so please put some amount of effort into it before telling me that the charger is for an oh-es-ex laptop!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!

What Microsoft generally has going for them are these three things:
1)Familiarity
2)Ubiquity
3)Compatibility
Guess which ones they built their position at their height with, and guess which ones they started tossing with Vista.
Oh, and in a wholly unrelated note, Windows has lost marketshare. Your numbers are a little old. Currently they are at ~90%, with OSX at ~7, Linux at ~2, and other operating systems accounting for the remainder.

@darundal: I am curious to see where you get your numbers as I'm fairly sure Apple has 3 percent. However; if you have a more updated source I think that going from 3 to 7 percent is quite an accomplishment.
I also agree with your reasons but would add:
Cost
Reliability
Style
I use Macs at work and I am no Mac hater. In fact, I really like them a lot and enjoy using them. With Vista though I get a similar style experience at home and my reliability and speed are fantastic. I have had no compatibility issues since SP1. The only thing that bugs me is boot time (about 1 minute 30 seconds). I'm a bit spoiled from the Macs at work in that regard. I don't buy the Vista montra. I've been using it for over a year and I honestly think it crashes about as much as my Mac at work, which is hardly at all. I also enjoy gaming which isn't an option with many titles on a Mac. I built my computer for $640 and its specs are better than iMac 24". I used my 24" iMac at work as the comparison and literally 1-upped each part in the entire computer and still landed at $640. Plus, its all modded, glowing, 8 fans and all that jazz.
The Mac hardware is just so darn expensive and we know there is nothing special about it. They don't use the IBM processor now as it was admitted Intel out-performed it and everything but the box is farmed out. Until the day that Steve Jobs went to the dark-side on that issue the Mac guys were still ripping and dissing the Intel processors and then when Steve said they were great, everyone changed their mind. You guys are just willing to pay SOOO much for basically the same thing I'm using. The crazy part is that you can't do 30 percent of what I can do even with the price your paying. You have integrated parts (yuck)and can't screw around with your hardware (no fun). At work, I don't care about price as my boss can pay all he wants for my equipment. Like I said, I enjoy using it as it does great with the Adobe CS3 suite in which I spend my time. However; at home Vista is making me smile.

Are they buying them because the commercials say its a good idea? or Will making the decision to switch is really the best route overall?
I live in St. Louis, MO close to the Galleria where there is a Mac Store. I went because I was told by friend of mine who works there to get a Mac for iLife and Time Machine. I thought they both were excellent applications and the price isn't too bad, I just kinda felt like I was using a child's computer. Everything was gorgeous don't get me wrong. I felt when I used it I was walking in a straight line, and diverting off that path was not an option. The look is neat and from what I hear the build quality is nice I just don't get the FLAMEWAR.

@Al1enware: I totally know what you mean. my sister has a mac while I have a PC and I go crazy when I try/have to use her computer; its a laptop and mine is a desktop so sometimes I have to put up with it if I want to surf the web away from home. the mac definitely has a child computer feel to it. and I'm not sure if it is a setting that you can change or not, but when you hook up your digital camera to the mac you can't just browse the pictures on your camera for one picture and download that one picture, no, you have to download ALL of the pictures. its like "what made you think that I wanted to do that you stupid mac" put simply: I just don't like how macs are so minimalistic.

I actually like the name. I don't see how that's any more boring than "OSX". Is that really any different than "Windows 7"? It's the tenth operating system. Wow. Real...awesome...

@bysty: So, if what you say is true, then they only count 1,2,3,95,98,2000, and I guess XP, and then 7 as real Windows OSes? but still, where is the 7 from. Do they count 95 & 98 as one or do they not count 2000. There's no way they don't count XP, it's the best OS they have ever made... I am so lost...

who cares, the windows operating system has way too many needless features.. until they correct their mistakes for implementing garbage into their OS to slow down the interface for craptacular computer owners like myself, i shall not purchase or buy into their demands. I am NOT a PC. THIS IS SPARRTAAAA

@jopari:
They're expected to change a lot of OS X in ways that's not immediately apparent to users. Among the things on the chopping block:
- The means for developers to more easily make use of GPUs and multiple CPUs
- A new C-based programming language that ties in with the previous point
- A revamped version of QuickTime (to be called QuickTime X), optimized for newer media codecs
- Out-of-the-box support for Exchange
- Theoretical RAM support up to 16 TB
- A totally revamped Javascript engine for better performance (I do believe the codename is SquirrelFish)
And that's only what we know so far.

@dc-united: And if it doesn't deliver on any of the promises that were used to hype it and performance is less than stellar, the name doesn't matter.
"Likewise, coming up with an all-new "aspirational" name does not do justice to what we are trying to achieve, which is to stay firmly rooted in our aspirations for Windows Vista"
That statement makes me believe Windows7 will be a flop for all the same reasons Vista was (and none of them have anything to do with the name).

@hammertime1994: Its based on the fact that 95-2000 are nearly all the same so their all under 4. The windows versions all have numbers along with there names. XP is 5 and vista is 6.

Wait, which is newer...Vista or 7? Is Windows 7, 91 versions oldelr then 98? Is Windows 2000 better then 7?
Never underestimate the ignorance of computers in regard to the average joe.

Ok, Microsoft has already copied enough from Apple. We have the start search/spotlight, Vista sidebar/Dashboard, Aero/Aqua, and now Windows 7/OS X. Come on and be original! Next thing you know there's going to be a thing called Windows Docking Station where you can keep your shortcuts and it expands when you mouse over.

They named it after Apple System 7, which came out in the 1990's. The next version of Windows will include technologies stolen from System 7, including, but not limited to: Cooperative multitasking Virtual memory Personal file sharing Improved user interface (*stifles laugh*) Quicktime QuickDraw 3D Oh, and my personal favorite... 32 bit memory addressing! Yes, Microsoft, you're truly on your way now...
