MacBook Pro 2008 Is Apple's Most Boomtastic Notebook Ever
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 3:23 AM on October 15, 2008

The new MacBook Pro 2008 is, at last, the worthy successor to the mythical PowerBook Titanium. From its new design--with an iMac-style glass screen, smooth Air-style surfaces, and no-button trackpad--to its guts--with new processors and the Nvidia GeForce 9400m and 9600m GT working in tandem--there's little not to like about the new MacBook Pro 2008. In fact, this thing is absolutely amazing. Full specs and details after the jump.
The MacBook Pro 2008 comes with
• The latest Intel processors running at 2.4GHz and 2.53GHz.
• Nvidia GeForce 9400m, a chipset that includes a graphics processors. 70% of it is the processor, with 16 parallel chips in one and 54 gigaflops.
• Nvidia GeForce 9600m GT graphics. This thing is a monster:
- 32 parallel graphics cores
- 120 gigaflops
- 512 MBytes.
- It works in tandem with the GPU in the 9400m chipset using Hybrid SLI technology, so that's a total of 174 gigaflops of graphics processing power.
• New multi-touch glass trackpad that acts as single button, providing a click feedback when you push it.
• The trackpad is 39% larger than previous models.
• It admits four-finger gestures, so you can call exposé now by using the four fingers, as well as to activate app switching.
• LED displays, which makes the screen a lot thinner.
• All connections are one side.
• Black MacBook Air style keyboard.
• Mini-display port connector.
The specs and prices
• Good Model: $US1999
- 15.4-inch screen
- 2.4GHz processor
- 2GB RAM
- DDR3
- Geforce 9400m and 9600m
- 250 Gig HDD
- Super-Drive
• Better Model: $US2499
- 15.4-inch screen
- 2.53GHz
- 4 GB RAM
- 512 MB on 9600GT
- 320 GIG HDD
Like with the MacBook Air, you can get a 128GB solid state drive as an option. Both are shipping today and you can get a Best Model with a 2.8 GHz processor.
Jobs also had a laundry list for the hippies and the treehuggers at Greenpeace. The new MacBook Pro is:
• Arsenic free
• BFR free
• Mercury free
• PVC free
• Recyclable
• Ships in a a 37% smaller packaging.

Anyone who pays three times the price for a laptop with an Apple logo on it is insane.
Absolutely nothing justifies that high a price.
This is insane, the economy is going to hell and they come up with even more expensive laptops, that have nothing special to offer.
Unbelievable.

No matte option? I hate how everything is a compromise!
LED display for better battery life and color.
No matte screen option.
Better quality construction/durability.
Two-tone black/aluminum design with chicklet keyboard.
I am pleased to hear about the environmental steps Apple has taken, but I don't know if it's worth selling my current MBP.

Err. Most Stunning? It's hideous.
I mean, I've never cared for the MBP design, but I'd easily take one of the old ones over this.
And it still has that idiotic hinge that won't let you swing the screen back all the way, which makes it annoying to use if you want to just walk up to your desk and push the screen back, getting a direct view without sitting down.

"All connections are one side."
Err, does that include USB connectors? If so, I don't see how we call that a feature.
Damn, my thinness estimate (.75 inches) was wrong!
LED backlit screen is good. Battery life sounds happy as usual :)
They should have an entry level without the fancy dual graphics; some people don't want to pay for two GPUs.
That buttonless trackpad is actually really smart. It sounds like their awful Mighty Mouse (click with finger on the right side and while there's only one physical switch, it knows it's being right clicked). This time they can't confuse dumb people with side buttons, Apple's mouse accelleration isn't so much a problem with trackpads, and the button won't become unclickable as soon as the computer is lifted.

The hinge is sometimes annoying though, that is true.
But the design, you have got to be kidding, or trolling. If you look at a MBP, closely, you will see that everything, and I mean _everything_ about this laptop was thought through, designed, and made beautiful. The screws on the bottom? Designed. You can tell this was done by someone obsessed with design, bordering on the creepy.

I am totally getting this - I was sold as soon as I saw the glass trackpad. That was 15 minutes into the presentation ;)
The only downside I see is the mini displayPort. A dual link DVI adapter costs $100! A normal DVI adapter $39. My old MBP can do both for "free". I suppose the idea is that people will buy DisplayPort displays which then don't need an adapter. It's also a bit cheeky to ask for $39 for the VGA adapter for the Pro machine. The projector in the meeting room needs VGA so I appreciated that the old MBP included an adapter.
I was so waiting for the black keys. They are so much nicer than the "painted plastic" silver keys on the current MBP (and I am typing on one, the painted keys have always annoyed me).
Those that say they are expensive please provide a link to a Dell that costs half as much at the same specs. Oh, you can't? Oh, well. I am not going to bother anymore. The Apple tax myth is perpetrated mostly by Microsoft and people who can't tell a Celeron from a Core 2 Duo - if you check actual facts, it usually ends up being $50, whoopedy doo, less than you pay for a Vista Ultimate upgrade. And that doesn't factor in that the MacBook Pro is the thinnest and lightest 15" laptop on the market. The new one is even thinner, so there you go.

@Herman: It's only that expensive if you compare it to low end PCs. I am at this moment shopping for a new laptop to run Solidworks. It is between the Dell Precision M4400 and the new MBP. Comparably equipped, the Apple is $200 more expensive (less than a 10% difference). At this level, that's the same price. You don't spend $2500 on a computer and cheap out over a couple hundred bucks. I am willing to pay that premium for a much better design, and as a bonus it means I can run OSX when I'm not using Solidworks, which I greatly prefer.
Obviously some people can't afford high end machines, but this (just like a high end Dell) isn't for them anyway.

So, ya. I am kind happy and upset all at the same time.
Happy:
*I'm not liking the look of the keyboard or the two-tone case. I will wait till I see it in person this weekend at the local Apple Store before I say I hate it or no.
*Why make the trackpad glass? I feel that''s just asking for problems. Is nice that it won't wear out like the plastic ones though.
Sad:
*Having access to the hard drive is something I really wanted with my MBP. I almost bought a MacBook because of it.
*While I do not like the idea of a glass trackpad, I like the idea of no mouse-buttons and the four-finger multi-touch. I can only hope they include it in a update for current MBP users.
Huh?:
*2 graphics cards? I love the big numbers the listed in the specs, but what good is it going to do for the normal user? I don't do anything graphic intensive on my Mac (no need to) and I bet a lot of people aren't going to use half that power either.
So, as a person who bought the now "old" MBP (bought mine in July), I come out of this a little happy, a little sad, and mostly confused about some of Apple's changes. I kinda want to upgrade to the new one, but know its not really worth it.
Anyone else here in the same situation?

The redesign is awful. I can't think of an acceptable implementation of the "chiclet" keyboard with the aluminum case, but their choices are borderline repulsive. I own a PowerBook G4 and the current MBP, and won't be switching to this MBP anytime soon if ever. From a company which prides itself on aesthetics, they really dropped the ball here.

They got rid of FW 400. And there's no matte option. Are they deliberately trying to cut out their professional video editing base? And the macbook and pro are now way too similiar. I mean, give the pro something to justify the hike in price. Really disappointed. Steve Jobs thinks everything has to be "THINNER" to be better. Why not give us the features we really want?

Regarding 2 graphics processors: For now they have a 'turbo mode', which you might say is lame but realize that's just a stop-gap until they come out with Snow Leopard. Snow Leopard is going to have OpenCL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenCL which is like Nvidia's CUDA in that it allows you to run arbitrary code on a GPU or a CPU depending on where it will run best. And with 32 cores we're talking alot of processing power. So in a year when Snow Leopard comes out, all these machines they're releasing today are going to be even faster. It's not exactly clear what GrandCentral is, but it's safe to say it probably will encompass what they'll be doing with OpenCL. Enjoy!

Two-tone really sucks! They should have made it black anodized to go with the black keys. Or all silver like the old Pros. So the specs are better - As they should be. I have no need or desire to buy this generation of MacBooks simply because of the the two-tone scheme.

Now I am SO happy to have purchased my MBP 17" 2.5 GHz HD LED in May, fortunately Apple rumours sites were warning us the terrible new design direction Apple is taking. What is Johnattan Ive doing for God sake !!! I think is absurd to do a whole product line up look like and IPhone. The PB G4 / MBP was a masterpice with a perfect keyboard and SUBTLE corners, (the PB G4 of 2003-2004 was even more pretty with a fine display bezel a little marred with 2006 camera incorporation). Do you want to see (on the PC side) a very nice last generation laptop powerhouse ? See Dell Precision M6400 in person, amazing notebook and VERY nice design for a PC. And for the new display 100% the same another ugly Iphone poor brother with the worst of the old model (the stand) and gone the simplicity of the slick aluminumm frame. Do you want the best and nicest monitor on earth ? Go buy the beautiful Dell 3008WFP, period.- My general advice: GO, NO, RUN TO BUY THE OLD MBP WHILE STOCK LASTS !!! Eduardo Budan / Argentina

@xb3ngx: Colour. Armour. Holiday. All ENGLISH words. Not your bastardised (not Bastardized) version of our language.
Also, I hope one day you discover where your shift key is so you can capitalise correctly. Honestly, if you're going to mock someone else's spelling in a post, then you really should make sure your own is up to the mark.
And don't even get me started on 'lol'.

Goddamn, I absolutely loathe this new flat key nonsense. I LOVED the old MacBook Pro/PowerBook's keyboard.

Two tone sucks, and this keyboads, I don't get it. Those cheap looking black keys on an aluminium case that the Air introduced are a step backwards from the almost perfect MBP keyboard I'm typing with now. Srill not worth upgrading (thou there's some nice features), and still hoping for touchscreens or iTablet.

@KirstenAssaracus:
If you were talking about the new direction the BMW took with Chris Bangle as the chief designer, I would have agreed as my favorite 3-series was the e46 but I kind of like this new design the MBP is going. I purchased the original TiBook when it came out and although it had some unforgivable flaws, I did love that machine (until my daughter who was 1 and a half at the time destroyed it). We also had the PB G3 (Wallstreet) which was an awesome machine but what the TiiBook brought as a design refresh was quite sensational. I think this new MBP is equally unique and in time will prove that Ive's vision to be loved by many and push in the right direction.

Not at all. The Sony VAIO Z has a 13.1" screen with 1600x900 resolution, and starts at just $80 more than the new MBP -- and that's what I'll be getting once I can pony up the cash.

Most stunning? Why? I still havent seen one good thing about this notebook and it's butt ugly!. I just got my mom to buy a new laptop. $460 on sale at Best Buy. Scored a 4.8 in Vista. Aside from graphics, that laptop blows this one away and with 4GB of memory.
Also why does a Mac need powerful graphics? This thing has more GUI power then any of my G5's and they all run Photoshop just fine. It's not like this POS laptop will be running Crysis.
Epic Fail!

I guess the companies that make screen protectors for the iPhone/iPod Touch are happy to add MacBook Trackpad protectors to their catalog.
I don't care if it's a Mac or a PC, if it has a glossy screen, I'm not buying it. BTW, does anyone know what enhancement glossy screens add to an lcd screen?

@JEmlay:
Wow. Why so angry? People do game on MBP. Heck, the guy who helped me get my current MBP did play Crysis on his MBP.
While I do agree that having two graphics cards is a little much, if they are able to use the GPUs for data processing in Snow Leopard as rumored, all that extra power will be put to good use. If I didn't have my current MBP (and liked the design changes they have made) I would probably get one for the shear fact that its is a powerhouse laptop at a decent price.

- 15.4-inch widescreen LED-backlit 1440 x 900 glossy display.
Only 1440 X 900? The hell? My HP laptop from two years ago cost less, had a larger screen, and still had 1680 X 1050.
- New multi-touch glass trackpad that acts as single button, providing a click feedback when you push it.
Ugg. That brings in the same problem I've had with the last few Mac mice into the laptop realm - I'm always worried I'll put just too much pressure on the mouse, or the trackpad in this case, and click randomly when I don't want to. It happens regularly with the mice, anyway.
- All connections are one side.
That's not necessarily a good thing - it could get cluttered fast.
Overall, though, it looks pretty promising. The styling looks fine to me, and I like a lot of the concepts like the quad-touch glass trackpad (though, obviously, not the "all one button" thing) and the construction.

But it's not a decent price. It's well overpriced as I clearly mentioned in my previous post.
As well I meant to say Macbook not Mac.

Agreed. And the glossy screen is uber fail for those wanting good colour output. This is fail on Apple's side. I don't think this is a worthy successor at all.

I agree! No blu-ray? Must be a marketing scheme to get the geeks $$ a year from now, when they release their next model.

I was eagerly waiting for this for so long so I could switch to Apple. So disappointed with the screen resolution - was hoping for 1920x1200 which is the std. with PC notebook wstns. And only glossy screen? I think Apple just lost out on a lot of PC converts. Apple is out of touch - arrogance setting in ???

I have been waiting for Apple to release a compelling new MBP and now I see that I still have to wait. I was hoping to see a quad core, 8GB machine. This is just a poor marketing ploy to keep Apple "fresh." This is a failure to meet expectations and a major disappointment. Bad form Apple, bad form...

Can anyone tell me why all the ports are now on one side of the MBP? If you use any larger sized USB device, it is going to block either the Headphone/USB slots, or the USB/Mini DVI display slots. If they have to all be on one side, space them out so that most of the USB devices can actually be used without having to carry around extra cables. If I were to buy the new model today, I go from carrying only the Power Adapter and a Bluetooth Mouse to needing to carry the power and mouse as well as a DVI converter cable and a USB hub or USB extension cable. Also, a reflective screen on a laptop? I travel a LOT and no matter what "contrast" I change the screen to, if it is in direct sunlight (Or direct lighting as well), it is going to be an extreme challenge to see anything detailed. Anyone doing outdoor photography is going to be cursing so loud you will be able to hear them 5 states away. Aren't "upgrades" supposed to make our lives easier? I own a Gen1 and Gen2 MBP as well as a couple Sony UMPC's, I guess I just have to hope they never break until the NEXT new release from Apple where they will hopefully stop going so proprietary that I need to carry extra items just to normally use the device and not blind me when I use it while traveling or outdoors. And for the people that are going to say "Just buy a screen cover for it", if you buy a Porsche or Mercedes, you shouldn't have to go to Big Lots to get your floor mats. I pay a premium to have the best, but the new model seems to be a step back in both functionality and usability.

As much as I prefer the sturdiness of the new Macbook Pros and the new trackpad, graphics card, I would get all of this if they could provide with a model that looks similar to the current macbook pro, but with the BRICK manufacturing process, the new graphics, trackpads etc. Bought a MBP 2 months ago, and I don't even want to sell it to get this one. Trackpad = don't really use iPhoto, etc., Graphics - Not really a gamer so don't need the new 9800 GT or whatever GPUs, and the intergrated graphics, notice it is the same battery life as the current 8600 GTs? Anyway, I still prefer the design of the older MBPs, which I feel, is a timeless design.

WHY NO 7200rpm drive? The majority of MBP users do video, which NEED fast HD's, and 5400rpm just doesnt cut it!! Sure its got an option for SSD, but i shouldnt have to shell out 600 bucks just for something that should cost a hundrend more. What gives Apple?

Surprised how much I loved the design (esp after the nano let down) and really glad they've got rid of the awful MBP keyboard (for my hands - just found the MacBook type keyboard so much more ergonomic and was wishing and praying that they'd transfer it to the MBP so YAY!). I though I hated the two-tone thing with the imacs but it grew on me really quickly. Also glad they didn't do bluray - the sooner that consumer unfriendly overpriced format dies, the better.

I can't believe people say it's ugly. If you don't like it, fine by me. But ugly. If Dell, or HP released it, it would be all great. That's the downside of Apple, high expectations, great disappointments. There's only one bad aspect, thats the glossy screen. But I never use it outside so, sign me up!
