Lego Mindstorms Fat Boy Is Controlled with Actual Bike Handles
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 9:00 AM on October 11, 2008
This remote-controlled Lego Mindstorms NXT Fat Boy bike is cute and stylised enough to guarantee a post on its own. But when you see that the actual controller is shaped like the handles of a real motor bike, then it's just not a matter of writing about it or not. It's a matter of taking a plane to Germany and stealing it.

for something that has the level of detail to have "real" bike controls, how did they manage to not put the brake lever on the correct side?
cool nevertheless.

He should make it thinner so it can lean more for faster turns.

Whoever made that has got talent.
He DOES NOT have too much time on his hands. So don't even think of saying that.

You had me thinking the handlebars on the bike, controlled the bike. That would be sweet. We could put a guinnea pig on it, get stoned, and watch it ride around.

I want to know how it was done wirelessly. Did he use the power function remote to link the two NXT controllers? Can you use the blue tooth function.

Unless building that was for his job which supports his living in a society, he has more time on his hands then me!

The music made me feel like I was attempting to front flip over the Sears Tower in time to blow up a school bus full of extreme kids, but watching that thing putz along at .5MPH was more like helping a dying yorkie -- you know, the one that's been in your family for like 15 years -- enjoy its last few steps before puppy heaven.
Not for nothing, but this sort of egregious choice of soundtrack is fast becoming the norm among makers of home video.
It's very, very upsetting.
(In a I really don't care and nor should you kind of way, that is.)

The music also fit the Engergizer Bunny beating his drum in the ad running below. Pretty good synch.

@Gilbert: well, it is mindstorms NXT, those are stepper motors so that's as fast as it can go.
that being said, DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT DO WANT!!!

Is that supposed to be a motorcycle? Looks more like a Vespa to me. Regardless, it's pretty cool. It's always neat to see some of the really odd controller designs that people have come up with. Steve Hassenplug still probably holds the claim for wackiest controller concept with one that has no moving parts (just uses accelerometers to determine which way you've tilted the control stick), I think I'm the only person who's designed one based on a classic gun-style RC controller (built entirely with one NXT kit...now if only I had enough spare time to figure out how to program the blasted thing so it'll operate my little NXT hot-rod), and I know I've seen at least one design based on the older twin-stick RC controllers.

@mfusion:
Not true. You can always gear the motors up. And unless you've built wheels the size of dinner plates, you pretty much have to.

@Xterm11:
The NXT brick comes equipped with Bluetooth 2-way transmission. You can control one NXT brick's functions with a controller built around another NXT brick (which appears to be what this person has done), or you can control them with a Bluetooth-enabled cel-phone or computer.

@Gilbert: funny -- i, too, found the music way too exciting and adventurous for that video. i think something along the lines of "elmos world" would have been more appropriate.

one problem, real motorcycles and bicycles steer using something called "counter steering".

@fuzzylollipop: Well, this is certainly true. Only, you are easily able to steer a motorcycle in the "correct" direction at low speeds, such as the one this thing is traveling at.
In fact, as a rider with well over 100,000 miles under his belt, I find counter steering silly under 7 or so MPH. I assure you, for example, you would be uncomfortable pulling the left handle and leaning right from a dead stop to simply turn the bike around.

Exactly. If you aren't going fast enough, then there is no way for the center of gravity to move to the opposite side to create the turn. You would just fall over. Bicycles are even more prone to this. Very rarely will you have to countersteer unless you are a track racer or moving down a very steep hill.

Awesome, he should convert it to a Batman 'tumbler' bike design (whatever the heck that thing was called).
Only prob with the controls are - the brake lever needs to be on the right. Thats the clutch lever at the moment (unless this thing has gears?).

@GwynnAnchialus: Not really. Counter steering happens at any speed sufficient for the bike to be stable through the gyroscopic effect of the wheels. You hardly need to be a racer to appreciate it. Its just more noticeable on a motorcycle since it is much much more massive.
And the brake is on the wrong side too.
