John McCain Blamed for Sucky Broadband in US
Posted by Wilson Rothman at 12:30 PM on October 2, 2008
Our friend (and Wired editor) Nick Thompson wrote a piece in the Washington Monthly accusing John McCain for the sorry state of America's broadband. It seems the e-mail-avoiding presidential candidate, as chair of the Senate Commerce Committee, supported too much consolidation and too little oversight. The end result? "Since 2000, the United States has gone from fifth in the world to twenty-second in broadband penetration."
To make matters worse for McCain, Thompson points out that France, the scourge of Republicans and veterans alike, now has broadband that's four times as fast—and half the price!
Admittedly, there's a bit of fuzzy matching required to join McCain's vehement opposition to the 1996 Telecommuncations Act and his subsequent statutory castration of its powers with the slow increase of our cable modem's actual download speed. However, there's no disputing the fact that McCain has done nothing to grow broadband penetration. (Even that comedic allegation that he helped invent the BlackBerry doesn't do anything to support any kind of breaching of the digital divide.)
In fairness to anyone who thinks we're reporting this lopsidedly, we have previously shared reports about Democratic vice-presidential candidate Joe Biden's opposition to net-neutrality legislation, and his Hollywood-backed war against citizen-pirates. And the reason we haven't discussed Sarah Palin's stance is simple—she's a clean slate, baby. Not a word on any of this.
But as you might imagine, Thompson uses his main point—McCain's consistent and ongoing hampering of the kinds of technological innovation that are commonplace in other countries—as a good reason to repeat what we have also recorded on Giz, that Barack Obama's attention to these matters will not be so blasé, that in fact he has interesting ideas, not just that America needs a cabinet-level CTO or that there should be true neutrality on the internet, but that, for instance, rural-phone subsidies are used to provide rural broadband (which would basically includes free phone service anyway).
Thompson makes the point that Silicon Valley has gone O, saying that 555 employees of Google have donated to Obama, compared to 26 for McCain. He says the market freedom that McCain wants is "freedom for his country to fall further and further behind as AT&T and the other telecom leviathans sit back, ignoring your customer service calls and just watching the $US90 monthly checks roll in." That's harsh, Nick, but it also sounds pretty damn accurate. [Washington Monthly]

Because anyone over the age of 30 doesn't care. (and anyone under the age of 22 will be in college, where broadband is plentiful)
So basically, you're looking at a very narrow market that makes a lot of noise. It isn't as big of a deal as Rothman would like to think it is.

Sounds like a crappy article with a crappy premise to me.
Like the current financial mess, one man (in this case John McCain) is not wholly responsible for this. Any journalist worth his salt would look at the intricate web of factors that have contributed to this. While consolidation certainly would play a part in this, did Thompson ever consider that perhaps the market has not demanded faster speeds?
Unlike France and other European (and Eastern) nations, the government does not fund, nor does it control, the means to provide broadband to the people. We are a market driven economy; the lack of broadband on the scale of those nations is because the market has not demanded it in that quantity.
There's also another significant factor that Giz and Wired ignore; the US, geographically, has a much more difficult time spreading broadband to the bulk of the population, most of which still lives away from big cities where broadband will be more prevalent. Its easy for France and Eastern nation to provide broadband on that scale because their population is tightly packed into large cities; its easier to lay the infrastructure in a dense city than it is in a rural setting.
Come on Giz, I expect more from you. Try thinking about these things before posting them.
P.S. Fix the damn italics, its annoying and hard to read.

"Inability" to use a computer isn't a valid reason to ignore the presence of the technology everywhere in our lives and stifle progress. In this world, blindness, quadriplegia, Lou Gehrig's disease (where you can't control any of your muscles) aren't enough to stop people from embracing and using technology and computers. "And it's not just that the United States is a big rural country. That explains some of our lag, but not all. Canada and Australia are thumping us too."
Every time I hear people justifying the suckitude of our current broadband situation in this country using this logic, it makes me want to barf. Why the hell drink the telco koolaid? Do people like you work for them?
Obviously the size of the country plays a role. But just as obviously, factors like serious lack of competition and serious lack of government lead incentives also play huge roles in this.

Please.
I've read this article twice now. And for the life of me I can't figure out 1) why Senator McCain is responsible for cable companies not achieving greater broadband penetration (by being against phone companies turning over their equipment for leasing to "little guys?" that's the reason??) and 2) why Senator Obama is not just as responsible by doing nothing tangible to improve broadband since he's been in office.
I can tell you that download speeds in rural France suck. Suck very bad. With some commonality, there are total down-time periods as well. I spend a lot of time in France and I overwhelmingly prefer my broadband infrastructure here in Florida. The article and writer really get this very, very wrong. We are much better off in the U.S.
[en.wikipedia.org]
{French} Service Quality and Connection Availability
... France has an unusually large proportion of overhead, as opposed to underground, phone lines. Underinvestment in infrastructure improvement has resulted in a steady decline in reliability and service availability, with certain areas of France experiencing widespread service failure several times per annum. Although a programme of fibre optic cabling is under way, it is a year behind schedule, and parts of the French telephone network have some of the worst signal-noise ratios in Europe. France Telecom's standard broadband offering is the Livebox, a combined modem and Wi-Fi router, with over 6 million units sold by August 2008. The Livebox has been plagued with problems, however, and often requires extensive user intervention before it will function properly. Some Apple Mac users report that all attempts to use the Livebox's Wi-Fi connection have failed, even after repeated calls to France Telecom's helpline. Broadband linespeeds can also be significantly less than advertised, particularly in rural areas where customers may be a considerable distance from their nearest exchange, in which case peak-time performance can be similar to that available with a 56K modem...

@Jon B.: I think JFK said it best: "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible, make violent revolution inevitable."
Also, if the last 8 years hasn't been enough motivation for you to be deeply impassioned about the future of the country, I don't think much else can.
Let me also say that I'm not strictly liberal / conservative- but I acknowledge that certain situations are definitely more suited for one or the other. In times of relative peace and prosperity, It's good to be conservative. When things need reforming, it's time to get liberal. When you want to hire a bouncer, you don't look for the guy who does your taxes. When you want someone to work as an accountant, you don't go scouting at the gym over by the squat rack.

Just who do you think owns that 70% of imported oil. Big Oil is making record profits on that imported oil and they don't care who drills for it as long as they use their drills. A rational energy policy will not happen as long as we have democrats and republicans only and it takes 100's of millions to be elected president. We need no political parties and let real people run for public office and then only let them run 5 ads that tell us what they stand for not what is wrong with their opponents. They could pay 10,000 to run for president and that money could be used to pay for the 5 ads to run on TV. That would shut up the media and the big corporations. Otherwise we can expect more of the same from now on.

Remember how people used to buy tech from us and corporations used to be based. Its the little things that keep them here. When you can't participate in a teleconference somewhere else because the internet you have is too slow then you tend to move eventually. eg. In France the internet is four times faster, Theres better drug laws, More efficient cars, better education, rising economy, and it france its pretty. Its the little things that matter. More like McCain was for the cause the housing market crash. I would recomend not listening to what either candidate says because 90% of it is out of context crap spun it a way to make the other look bad. Instead listen multiple news programs not one because they are all biased one especially Fox or CNN which are biased rebuplican and democrat respectively find multiple sources that don't get their information from the same place. .... i wouldn't blame anything on a presidential candidate... ESPECIALLY if it's in comparison between here in the US, and say Japan. Japan has the mindset to put money towards stuff that will benefit future generations. Here in the US.... our leaders have the mindset of only putting money towards what will benefit us in the next year or a few. Japan.... pretty much has fiber-optic everywhere. here in the US.... fiber-optic is basically in major cities only... and also in that regard is NOWHERE near Japan's connection speeds (1Gbps makes me wanna move to Japan. lol)
What we need is a hardcore Japanese president... one with the frame of mind they have in Japan, so that MAYBE.... MAYBE their point of view will spread here, and our presidents and leaders won't be such snobs looking to increase the coin in their own pocket more than the overall well being of the nation. Canada (among other places) has free health insurance... Japan has blistering internet speeds... in Sweden, work is optional.... what do we get? in short... the shaft.

@Eric Merrill: Except the part about the bill is true and fact that we don't have laws that would have come the bill is large part of why are internet speeds are slow. The bill would of forced telecoms to lease their networks to businesses at whole sale rates the businesses would then sell internet competitively causing the prices to lower and speeds to go up. Theres a lot of Liberal Stupidity out there, but this isn't it. This largely because our government is and may continue to be run 60+ year olds who hardly know how to send emails. You can't expect them to understand the internet and potential.

@AtomicSpud:
I'm sorry, I cannot say it any other way:
You sir, are an idiot.
The statement of "Socialist States of America" makes me laugh. You silly conservative, America ALREADY has PLENTY of socialist elements. Even with these elements, we are FAR from a socialist state. And FYI, liberalism and leftism are not the same thing. Leftism is towards socialism, and liberalism is not.
By the way, I don't understand the ruckus over taxes. Of course getting taxed more sucks, but we NEED taxes to run the country. And taxing the rich more makes completely perfect sense.
Oh, and liberals are barely in control of the Senate, and were not until the 2006 election. The House of Representatives is more liberal at the moment, but liberals do NOT have enough of a majority to get any work done with the dumbass we have as president throwing around signing statements and vetoing everything under the sun.
Please, do educate yourself before making such statements. And please cut down on your use of all caps. Contrary to popular belief, caps lock is not "cruise control for cool."

You know the people who think everyone in cities are elitist and dropped out of high school, believe in withches, have 8 kids named Tron, Trip, Zig, Zoink and couldn't tell you where the Middle East is leta alone Iraq. Yeah those people should be able to run for president. The only good things the political parties do is keep the stupid masses from being elected. Yeah I know the current people in office aren't the smartest people, but I'll take George Bush again over some random person from Idaho that I've only seen on five thirty second commercials.

@scarbrtj: Download speeds in rural france are about what they are here the average speed here is 2 Mbps in cities. Once you go rural here the only broudband your getting is satelite or dial up and satelite unlike in Japan is the worst broudband you can buy because the satelites are so overloaded with rural consumers that during peek hours your connection slows 200 kbps. The telecommunication act which John McCain opposed. Would of have allowed for a competitive communications market unlike the current monopoly of about four telecoms in the US. In Japan and Korea who have the fastes and lowest priced internet speeds they have hundreds of ISPs while here we have under ten for the whole nation. Your lucky if you have a choice between two reasonable ones (not satelite or dial up). McCain is directly responsible for opposing this bill. As for Obama I'm not sure, but at least he addresses it in length in his campaign statement while McCain's statement consists of I will improve are infrastructure. He has never mentioned and probably never this article is completely accurate

Like not taxing consumers who buy on the internet. Obama's site mentions nothing about this.(lord knows he is going to need LOTS of money for his spending plans).
Also he wants to expand broadband into more areas so everyone has access to internet.

Ahhh, the wonders of socialism. France can have their fantastic broadband. They can also have their 25% unemployment, the huge population of unhappy immigrants that riot when they don't get free handouts, and the unbelievably high taxes.
If you look at most everyone on these lists, they're smaller countries with dense population centers. Those countries didn't suffer nearly as bad from the dot.com crash. They didn't have thousands of companies ordering billions in infrastructure, and then sticking the Telcos with the unpaid bills and overbuilt infrastructure. The telcos are still trying to eak out a living. They can't afford to upgrade infrastructure every 2 years.
GPON would solve much of the problem. However, to do a city like Baltimore, Verizon would have to hire 3000 people and spend several years to get the city completely connected. What does Verizon do with those 3000 employees when the project is done? What about every other city in the US? After 3 years, do we just drop them like garbage, only to be forgotten about when the project is finished? Do you force the telcos to hire contractors? Do you get the government involved? The unions would have a fit. The newspapers would cry their sad songs. Obama, Pelosi, and Hillary would moan and have press conferences.
And who wants to pay for it? Market acceptance would be 50% or less in the best neighborhoods. In the worst neighborhoods, they won't be able to afford it. Then the politicians will cry about the high price! Do you want Verizon to spend billions to connect everyone, and then only get 50% acceptance or less? I'm sure we could have the government subsidize it. Who wants their tax dollars to pay for Bubba's broadband so he can eat cheesy poofs and sit at home and watch porn all day long? Pelosi, Hillary, and Obama will want that... that's their voting base.
If you don't like your broadband situation, there are plenty of alternatives, including MOVING. I'm tired of the "Hey, we're not winning the race" articles about broadband. Last time I checked, there wasn't a prize for being first. And there are plenty of people who don't want their children exposed to broadband and all the wondrous things it has to offer. For those of you geeks that have kids, you know what I'm talking about.

IE: It's very expensive. I don't want my tax dollars going to it. I think capitalism/free market will eventually drive nationwide broadband.
On the flip side of capitalism, that also means I don't want the government regulating it so much. Let the free market do what it does best. Let more internet providers come into the area, and let them offer plans they design. Let competition flourish.

But unfortunately, we've let ourselves get so polarized into a RIGHT/LEFT mentality that most people can't see things any other way anymore. It's a terrible shame, as it's destroying rational dialogue (just take a gander at half the comments here) and paralyzing the entire country.

The highest principle of Nazism (National Socialism), said Goering, is: "Common good comes before private good."Socialism is the social system which institutionalizes envy and self-sacrifice: It is the social system which uses compulsion and the organized violence of the State to expropriate wealth from the producer class for its redistribution to the parasitical class [read- People that willfully sit on their ass and wait for a monthly check, when they can be out fliping a burger and taking the jobs that supposidly no amreican would do.]

@Jon B.: Understand that people are individuals first, and members of a group second. Every group has its share of combative idiots, as well as its share of rational, compassionate people. The trick is to separate the individual attitude from the ideas they espouse, and not always use the most negative or extreme example to represent a group. That person you described was probably in the "combative idiot" category, but that doesn't mean everybody who shares his ideas is one. Deal with people as individuals first, and you will be better able to communicate, compromise and relate to others.

@AtomicSpud: If you want to keep ALL your money, move to Mars: There isn't a government out there that won't tax you. And you might want to do the barest modicum of research before saying Obama is going to tax the middle class out of existence: His proposed tax raises are pretty much all above that bracket. You can believe in whatever supreme being you want to - you just can't integrate it into governmental channels. That's one of the premises upon which this country was founded, after all. If that's not good enough for you, go move to a theocracy. I hear Saudi Arabia's nice this time of year.
I earned everything I have by my damn self, thank you very much, but I recognize that others might not start on the same level as I did. The premise at hand is not to give away "handouts," but to try to ensure that everybody starts at a base level so that they can contribute to the economy. Some government programs are horribly misguided, yes, but that doesn't mean that the best alternative is to eradicate them all.
I'm perfectly willing to have a rational conversation with somebody who has a different perspective, but if you're going to be insulting and combative towards anybody who doesn't agree with you, you're just shooting yourself in the foot.

@jayhawk11: Yeah, given that this demo's "values" are more focused on high-speed internet and mobile phones than, say, defense against Islamofascists, curbing of resurgent Russia, tax policy, selection of SCOTUS judges, etc. I can see why Obama would be a very attractive candidate for them.

@Dancing Milkcarton: Jon B didn't have a point, except to point out how apathetic he is when it comes to politics.
"Why do (insert group here) seem so angry"?
It should be extremely obvious.

This is my last post.. I promiss! the guy next to me in the plane gave this to me after he read your posts: I hope you laugh....
COW POLITICS:
DEMOCRATIC
You have two cows.
Your neighbor has none.
You feel guilty for being successful.
Barbara Streisand sings for you.
REPUBLICANISM
You have two cows
Your neighbor has none.
So?
SOCIALIST
You have two cows.
The government takes one and gives it to your neighbor.
You form a cooperative to tell him how to manage his cow.
COMMUNIST
You have two cows.
The government seizes both and provides you with milk.
You wait in line for hours to get it.
It is expensive and sour.
CAPITALISM, AMERICAN STYLE
You have two cows
You sell one, buy a bull, and build a herd of cows.
BUREAUCRACY, AMERICAN STYLE
You have two cows.
Under the new farm program the government pays you to shoot one, milk the other, and then pours the milk down the drain.
AMERICAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You sell one, lease it back to yourself and do an IPO on the 2nd one.
You force the two cows to produce the milk of four cows. You are surprised when one cow drops dead.
You spin an announcement to the analysts stating you have downsized and are reducing expenses. Your stock goes up.
FRENCH CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You go on strike because you want three cows.
You go to lunch and drink wine.
Life is good.
JAPANESE CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You redesign them so they are one-tenth the size of an ordinary cow and produce twenty times the milk. They learn to travel on unbelievably crowded trains. Most are at the top of their class at cow school.
GERMAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You engineer them so they are all blond, drink lots of beer, give excellent quality milk, and run a hundred miles an hour. Unfortunately they also demand 13 weeks of vacation per year.
ITALIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows but you don't know where they are.
While ambling around, you see a beautiful woman.
You break for lunch.
Life is good.
RUSSIAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
You have some vodka.
You count them and learn you have five cows.
You have some more vodka.
You count them again and learn you have 42 cows.
The Mafia shows up and takes over however many cows you really have.
TALIBAN CORPORATION
You have two cows.
They go into hiding.
They send radio tapes of their mooing.
IRAQI CORPORATION
You have all the cows in Iraq, which are two.
You don't milk them because you cannot touch any creature's private parts. You get a $40 million grant from the US government to find alternatives to milk production but use the money to buy weapons.
POLISH CORPORATION
You have two bulls.
Employees are regularly maimed and killed attempting to milk them.
BELGIAN CORPORATION
You have one cow.
The cow is schizophrenic.
Sometimes the cow thinks he's French, other times he's Flemish. The Flemish cow won't share with the French cow. The French cow wants control of the Flemish cow's milk. The cow asks permission to be cut in half. The cow dies happy.
FLORIDA CORPORATION
You have a black cow and a brown cow.
Everyone votes for the best looking one.
Some of the people who actually like the brown one best accidentally vote for the black one. Some people vote for both. Some people vote for neither. Some people can't figure out how to vote at all. Finally, a bunch of guys from out-of-state tell you which one you think is the best-looking cow.
CALIFORNIA CORPORATION
You have millions of cows.
They make real California cheese.
Only five speak English.
Most are illegals.
Arnold likes the ones with the big udders.

@johnnyabnormal: Obama has had sex in the last twenty years...his name is Larry Sinclair. Obama bought Larry some powder cocaine, then got himself some crack. I guess he likes to be hardcore. Biden's son even had Larry arrested on bogus charges after speaking at the National Press Club.
Porn spurs innovation. I just don't want to see Michelle Obama's long, flat ass, cause it is covered in dust cause Barack ain't touching it.

"GOD I am Glad That they DO!! We have Rights to ya know!!!"
Well, duh. It still doesn't exempt you from looking stupid for saying the dems have controlled congress for x amount of years.
"the Right to believe in what ever God we want without the government saying we cant mention his name"
Uh, are you trying to say Democrats won't allow you to say your "god"s name? Prove it.
"the right to raise up our children with out asking for a Handout"
Oh yeah, because you never had that right... Send your brats to private school.
"the Right to Keep ALL our money and use It as we see Fit"
Uh huh. Republicans never take your money. Yup.
"I guess you faild American Government in Highschool cause you seem to forget that this country is NOT about who is in the Majority gets to STEP on the MINORTY."
