iPhone OS 2.1 Won't Fetch Emails in Sleep Mode
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 9:14 AM on October 7, 2008
Another bug in iPhone OS 2.1, which we have tested and reproduced, is that it will no longer fetch emails in the background while in sleep mode on battery power. It's most probably one of the power-saving tweaks introduced in 2.1, since Apple says that the 15-minute fetch interval is the worst wear on the battery because it never lets the phone go into deep sleep mode. This Apple discussion thread chronicles the problem at length. It's possible it'll be fixed in the next update—a reader tells us that Apple confirmed it's a "known problem" and that they are looking into it, but in the meantime, don't lean too hard on fetch. [Apple - Thanks Josh!]

Is it just me...
or is Apple news starting to get annoying?

Um, if it's in sleep/power saving mode, why would you want it to check email? Seems like the whole point of powersaving mode is that it doesn't do anything that takes power.
On another note, am I the only one who has problems with podcasts not being marked as "played?" I thought this was fixed in 2.1 but I still seem to be having problems with it.

I'm set for PUSH on both Exchange and MM. The constant pinging it driving me insane. Ping Ping Ping Ping PIng Ping...arrrgh..... if not for work, I would turn the darn thing off. Why people love PUSH eMail and the need to have it ping/vibrate 24/7/365 is beyond me.

That wouldn't be a problem if the Push stuff actually worked... That seems to have been broken in 2.1 too.

So, instead of asking what will 2.2 fix, we should be asking what will it break so that 2.3 can fix it.

There is a fix that has worked for me . Here it is go into settings>general>reset>reset all settings.Once the phone has reset all settings then adjust them back accordingly. Dont ask why but since this i have noticed my phone actually goes on standby hence a diffence between standby and usage time in the usage menu.My battery life has been better and email fetch on schedule and this with yahoo push on and mobile me push on for calenders bookmarks and contacts. I tried it on a friends phone and it worked. I hope it works for you also but i cant say that 100% as ive only seen it work twice.

I read the latest txt, but the title bar still says "Text Messages(1)"
Anyone else?

Well, that would be why I'm not getting any e-mails unless I'm manually checking it.
Gosh darn it Apple.

No No - This is NOT A NEW BUG.
I had this in the 2.02 OS and it was the primary REASON I returned the iPhone (among others)..

@Ken_Darrow: That's why I use another email service that supports server-side rules (e.g., gmail). In my case, my main mail account is gmail, and I have filter rules that only autoforward important/urgent mail to my push mail address. The push mail address is only used as a "you have important/urgent" email alarm, and so my iPhone doesn't go ping-ping-ping 24x7 -- only for the important/urgent messages. All of my email is read/sent via gmail, and the push address is used only as an alarm (I just periodically do a delete all on the push address).

Heh, push mail FTW.
Note that MobileMe (which may or may not have issues) isn't the only push mail solution. There are other solutions, free and non-free.
And note that, if you use a separate mail service that supports server-side rules (e.g., gmail), you can autoforward only select email to your push mail account, effectively giving you control over which email messages interrupt you (very useful if you get a lot of email). Basically, you use gmail (or whatever supports the server-side rules) to read and write email, and the push account is used only for email notification; you don't care about the push account's contents, and just periodically do a "delete all". Another nice side-effect is that you can switch push email providers as necessary; if one becomes unreliable, you can switch to another one, without having to change your email address. You only have to change your server-side rules.

@weatherman: That's like saying that if the phone is in sleep mode, I shouldn't be able to get texts (which come through the second you receive them) or phone calls (which also come through the second you receive them). Fetch mail is broken.
If you don't have your phone asleep when you're not using it, you can just watch the battery go down. Sleep mode is the only way you can lock your phone when it's in your pocket. I'd still like to know when I get e-mails, even if it's in my pocket.

@Ken_Darrow: I need it to ping/vibrate 24/7/365 because I'm paying for that service every month and I was told when I bought the darn thing it would give me access to that info If I set it up.

@bgivnin: Oh - I totally misunderstood what "sleep mode" referred to. I thought we were talking about when you power off or some other mode that I don't use. Fetch doesn't work when the screen goes off? Seems to work for me but maybe I haven't been noticing.

It checks for new mail only when plugged in. A big point of the iphone was to notify of new mail while in your pocket. Since 2.1, it's more useless than a beeper. But hey, it doesn't crash as much. I don't know why this major oversight hasn't made more news.

Some of you are clearly impatient. As far as I know, Apple's the ONLY phone company that releases firmware so frequently. Most others would just sooner let you rot or buy their next phone to obsolesce the bug. Please tell me another company that issues so many updates on their phones? And yet, people are still bitching. Just wait a few weeks for the new one. What, you can't wait a few weeks??!?

You're right... We DO get frequent updates through Apple.
I used to have a Sidekick prior to the iPhone, and we only got an update like twice a year. @Noobs-R-Us:

@jwardell: I think it checks on battery if the phone's awake--you won't get new mail notifications while it's in your pocket, but next time you look at the phone you will.
And Push is on all the time, I believe. It's Fetch that's broken.

Good Question - :)
I did not know how to take a screen shot at the time, never thought to look at the app store for a screen cap util, I just grabbed a camera and took a photo...
I like to photograph things - so it was simple and quick :)
