iPhone 2.2 Update Finally Brings Google Street View to Maps?
Posted by John Mahoney at 11:40 PM on October 6, 2008
After being sent out to developers last week promising only "compatibility testing" enhancements, the pre-release version of iPhone software 2.2 is starting to spill its secrets. The folks at Mac Rumors have dug up evidence that appears to indicate Google Maps' Street View finally making it into the Maps app, after popping up in the regular mobile Maps applications for non-iPhones as well as, of course, Android, with the cool Compass view feature. On top of Street View, they've also uncovered a few other new features, including the ability to disable the text auto-correction feature while typing.
Namely, the ability to turn off the keyboard's auto-correction feature and support for Japanese emoji emoticons--the typically adorable little icons that Japanese teens (and adults?) can't live without. Lack of emoji support has actually been blamed for slower iPhone sales in Japan, so there you go. I'm not sure who would want to live without keyboard auto-correction though--that would take a mastery of multitouch typing that I have yet to see. [Mac Rumors - image is a 'Shop, not the actual implementation]

Well, everyone *else* who want's it off, would want it off. Now, I know that you, with your vast worldly experience and knowledge are the de-facto auto-correction expert, may you live for ever in glory! But, allow us, others, pariahs, if I may call us that, some leverage and a way to decide if we actually want to delve outside of your safety bubble and live on the edge by turning the *uc***g auto annoyance off.

@juicebytim:
The autocorrect feature is the single handiest feature for me. Once the spellchecker learned my typing habits and I got just a little muscle memory, I could start typing faster and more comfortably than I ever could with a regular thumbpad (not that I'm some super-speedy typist). I can't even imagine typing on something other than the iPhone's keypad now. Lazy keystrokes and gentle taps FTW.

@jabiez: I believe the Compass view feature is only valid on the Android phones, and is not a feature of the iPhone (as it does not have said compass in it).
But yes, that's what it does, rotate the map to orient with whatever way you're facing. Not sure about the street view.

Although this may be true, the auto-correction's poor/lack of self-adaptability truly hurts it. I know it's supposed to not suggest things after you X them a few times, but that just does *not* work as advertised.... unless I'm just somehow doing it wrong?

Did you mean to say that lack of emoji support has been blamed for
slower iPhone sales? That is, is lack of emoji support slowing iPhone sales, or has Apple's lack of interest in implementing emoji due to the slow pace of iPhone sales in Japan?

Does the compass view means the iPhone knows which way you're pointing it and changes the Street view orientation? If so, that is really cool, but I don't think it's all that useful if you don't have map/camera implementation.

You know what? Street View is kickass & all, but I really need support for the transit options on Google Maps...I mean, I know that they've only been released in the main US market for public transit (NYC) for about two weeks, but I'm desparate for transit info on my iPhone...you know, something that might actually be valid in the real world...
Or am I just missing something and this has already been built in and I just haven't heard anything about it?

No, you aren't. The damn thing is so badly conceived that I am AMAZED Apple stubbornly refuses to fix that. It is SO bad that I suspect it must be a favorite "feature" of His Steveness. It is so bad and insultingly stupid not to be able to turn it off that I promised myself, just now, to jailbreak the phone to turn it off if it doesn't come out toggle-able in 2.2.

It's just like any other auto feature. It has to learn. It needs to learn what words you use more often, what shorthands you use, etc. I absolutely love it. Like I use I'LL 100 times more often than ill, so if I just type i l l, the iPhone corrects it to I'll. I think most people are just too damn impatient.

Stupid icons and street view? It's jackassery like this that almost makes me wish for WinMo again. I mean seriously... these are the two features they thought would improve the device?!?!
On another note, I agree that the supposedly adaptive suggestion typing does not work. I know I talk like a sailor at times but if I have to go back and change He'll, and fuching back to Hell and F%@&ing one more time I may punch Jobs myself.... that is if he wasn't so frail from coming back from the dead and a heart attack.

Autocorrection really doesn't work well for languages other than english. I write most of the time in french and it often suggests totally irrevelant english words for valid french words. It sucks big time.
If at least it worked the other way around: unless you explicitly tap on the word, it shouldn't make the correction; it's really frustrating when you're typing fast.

Can we use the accelerometer to control street-view? That would be pretty impressive. Better yet combine it with the camera view and image comparison between the stored and live images to correct for GPS errors. Then overlay the geocoded information to yield an augmented reality app. Further, allow people to capture images on street view on the ground to improve street-view.
...ok, ok, not anytime soon, but perhaps such advances might be a sign of things to come.

"I'm not sure who would want to live without keyboard auto-correction though-"
I would, the auto-correct HATES ME!
It will not let me type:
My last name - Aschan (try it, it won't let you type the 'n' at the end.)
My city - Norristown. (It won't let you type the second 'r')
My GF's company (Lego! of all things. It won't let you type the 'o'.)
And a few other words that it won't let me type. It's actually really frustrating.

I have the answer for you as to why someone would turn off the autocorrect feature. If someone regularly texts or emails in more than one language. I (and several people I know) email and text in both english and spanish. Since autocorrect only uses the language that is associated with your locale, it can only autocorrect in one language. If you write a spanish email (or any other language that is not the one you have as your default) without actively watching and declining the suggestions, you wind up sending an email full of gibberish. Again, its an issue for multi-lingual people (not people that always use spanish in the US or somoething like that, because you can just change your localization settings for that)

I mean, to us nerds, copy/paste is an important feature, but Apple has apparently run the numbers and decided we nerds aren't a large enough consituency. Same with emoji: perhaps it has been on the drawing board for some time now but given a low priority because so few people care about it.

sorry to say, but this last sentence is a bit ingorant and represents a typical part as a lot of europeans see you americans:
most of you know sh*t about other countries.
since the auto correction may work properly or at least much better in english you probably didnt notice that it works like sh*t in some other languages.
the german version (germany is probably the biggest market right after the US) definitly is bad. it suggests words that dont even exist and it doesnt recognize some of the most simple words.
now its going to be a little more exotic: switzerland. probably no one in the hq of apple knows that in switzerland we speak swiss-german and also write in swiss-german, at least between friends. business is in standard german. and there are at least 24 different versions of swiss-german (dialects). now imagine having to click X after every single word you write on your iphone. putting a auto-correction on/off switch into the settings is probably one of the easiest parts for the developers and should be standard anyway since even 10 year old mobile phones have this feature.
