HTC Touch HD Gets German Review (Verdict: Es ist gut!)
Posted by John Mahoney at 1:59 AM on October 7, 2008
Frustrating is the wait here in the States for HTC's Touch HD--especially when our European friends are swimming in them. German site Area Mobile is the latest to post their impressions, and unsurprisingly, they're pretty positive. I only wish iPhone-killer had a cooler German translation.
The folks at Area Mobile, in proclaiming said iPhone-killer status, were most impressed with the browsing experience, noting that the HD's spacious 800 pixels of landscape resolution allows for surfing without zooming in and out on a lot of sites. They also note that the TouchFlo 3D is as snappy as ever, and does a fantastic job of hiding Windows Mobile's inherent nastiness. Check out more in the video below, should you sprechen sie Deutsche:

The German language sounds a lot less weird than I used to think. God this phone is amazing. I second that it should come to Sprint. Instinct upgrade!

I'm looking forward to this myself. I'm a big fan of WinMo, as finally companies are putting it on devices that have enough juice to run it properly

why does everyone want to hide windows mobile? i had gotten used to the UI years ago. it's so funtional and and the application base is HUGE. on top of that WM is really customizable.
i really want this phone to come out before i end up buying the G1 and end up regreting it.

this thing needs a ton of juice to run that over animated UI ontop of windows, I guess? HD looks nice, though. Dont see to many HTC devices for the CDMA's of the world, so this is strictly a tmo/att device.. if it even comes here.

I don't know. It seems that every touch of the screen to change or move something is followed by a 1-2 sec delay. Scrolling through the photos for example. Not good!

iPhone Killer, please. Why bother, just make a good phone. Period.
I also like the lag in response during the photo browsing, that suggests that extra touch of class.
I've done some hands on with the Instinct and the Touch Diamond, neither were up to snuff. I think Blackberry will be the only real competitor.
And, HTC Build quality isn't that great.

@Stacky Botrus: CDMA's of the world? Where? US/SK/Canada? Canada (Telus/Bell) is switching to GSM/LTE within the next 36-48 months.
CDMA is a technology VERY MUCH in decline.
Get off the boat before it sinks.

Hope this thing doesn't cost as much as a laptop and it's subsidized just like the iPhone to make it more competetive. I think that's the sharpest edge the iPhone has over i's competition, its price. Somehow I prefer winmo over the iphone's interface for both form and function. Never had a winmo device but I really want to try one out now. Why doesn't microsoft just use winmo as an os on their zune to make a iPod touch competitor Lol.

Looks promising, most likely a nice iPhone upgrade. What I still don't get, from the video alone, is the browser lag still being persistent. It looks like Opera Mobile might need a desktop sized CPU in order to render pages as smoothly as the Safari on the iPhone does. If there's a way to get Safari on WM, now that'd be sweet.

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E:
Canada is switching to GSM/LTE. South American CDMA networks are already switching to GSM. The CDMA networks in Japan/Korea are switching to LTE as early as next year.
But no one said anything about the US. You can be sure that the US carriers will continue to lag behind in mobile technology.

I used a diamond in a beverly hills sprint store. I gotta say the user interface on this phone was really disappointing. it wasn't responsive and it really was illogical to navigate. I hate the iphone because i want a keyboard but i used it the same day in the apple store and i will admit. It's a much better interface. looks like it may be the android phone for me. I'd suggest using it in real life before buying it.

What everyone seems to forget about Windows Mobile devices is that you can slice, dice and re-cook your ROMs easier than making dinner. Don't like a function? Strip it. Like a program in someone else's device? Add it to your ROM. Many, many things you will never be able to do with an iPhone, which I am using now after changing from a Tilt2.

i know touch screen phones are the next big thing, but why doesn't it have a physical keyboard. maybe my view on touch screen phones is jaded by a short stint with a lg voyager (one of the first ones, and one of the worst phones ever, in my opinion). physical keys are so nice once the touch screen has pissed you off you can just open the thing up and all is well once again...

@lodleader: What about At&t? Sprint is a falling company that is making itself the best until it an regain its balance. . . I doubt it. . .
Its At&t's turn to make money, plus its a GSM model so there is no confirmed CMDA versions of the HD. . .

@Noobs-R-Us: HTC registers an input at the end of the swipe.
Its the way they decided to code it. I would have preferred it during the swipe, but after using the Diamond, its just something you get used to.

@SuramaAte: Chances are it was running on the old ROM, which is known to be laggy.
If you used a "Cooked" rom, or for sprint, the "Jucy" rom, the thing is extremely fast and responsive.
I agree, the stock rom is not impressive at all, and im suprised the CDMA latecomer didnt carry with it the updated ROM. But a simple ROM update would make the thing much better.

@OGHowie: You can find out now. The Touch Diamond is nearly identical to this interface (this one shows more content due to resolution and has a few updates).
It doesnt hide all of it, but if you look at XDA, they are pretty much tailoring alot of the future apps for WM to follow the HTC design scheme, and they all help hide WM very well.
It doesnt stop WM from having a solid backend that lets you do whatever you want with your device.

My Touch Diamond goes back to Sprint tomorrow.
What few reviews show is that the beautiful GUI (aka the pigs dress) is only 1 click away from Windows Mobile ugliness. Dig past the home screen to your email and calendar and now you are forced to navigate in WinMob land with a touch screen that isn't that responsive.
Nice try, maybe the HD is better.

I'm actually from Germany, but this test is nothing special. At first he talks about how classy and polished it looks, even though a lot of plastic is used. The touch screen responds much better than the one on the Diamond and the picture gallery (the same as in the Diamond) runs a lot smoother. The picture-quality of the 5MP-camera sucks, but a cool feature is, that you can tap on the screen before taking a pic and at that spot, the image gets sharp (i don't really know how to make that sound more logical on English, sorry) Then one of the weird guys (with the headphones) tries the built in MP3 player with "high end headphones" from Sennheiser and says, that the quality is overwhelming. After that it's just some talking about stuff, that we already know. The internet browser is comparable to the mobile safari on the iPhone. That's a little summary of what those guys were talking about. Sorry for my crappy English, as I said, I'm German. (and please don't think all Germans are as weird as those two in the video above ;) )
