HAL Robot Exoskeletons Available for Rent
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:10 PM on October 8, 2008

The day for you to strap yourself into a robotic exoskeleton and fight crime the way your normally flabby limbs would never have let you has come! Cyberdyne, the Japanese company responsible for the HAL (hybrid assistive limb) prototype robot suit, is starting rentals this week. The price for being superhuman: about $US2,200.
The 10 kilo battery-operated system is belted to your waist and captures brain signals through sensors attached to your skin. HAL supposedly works effortlessly with your muscles, increasing your strength up to 10 times the norm without turning you all jolty and robot-like. Think Iron Man instead of Robocop. If the price is a little too much for you, you can rent a cheaper option - one leg for $US1,460.
But really, can you put a price on looking this good? [Daily Mail]

@gothamdarkknight:
Well, legitimate uses could include improved mobility for those whose legs are injured but still retain residual control. For example, atrophied muscles.

Something about a company called Cyberdyne making robot skeletons doesn't sit well with me. Oh well, the global economy is screwed, why not bring on the Terminators?

Hmm, some of this sounds a little familiar. A robot named HAL and a company named Cyberdyne. These guys may be ridiculously smart but they need to work on their original names.

And, so starts the age of heads floating in jars on top of robot bodies . . . like in Futurama . . . for $2,200.

@PingMaster: Yes, perhaps this company is about to launch a satellite system called "SkyNet" to tell all of these 'HALs' to kill their users.

Could you image creeping in behind one those yuppie speedwalkers types in one of those and sporting the expression as that seen in the second picture? That alone would tempt me to spend the money on it.

@gothamdarkknight: Seems like as the ability to lift more with your legs increases, the likelihood of destroying your back increases.
Pretty soon, you'll have to upgrade to the other pieces as it slowly destroys your body: robot for your legs, back, arms, etc...

I'm really interested to see how these actually work. I can understand their use for elderly or disabled, but definitely not for regular use. I wonder if they could help you lift more weight while doing squats or dead lifts. That would be interesting, but I guess it depends on how strong the material is in the joints and if it will hold up to the stress.
