Giant iPhone Display Runs OS X (This Time, At Least)
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 7:00 AM on October 5, 2008
Eagle-eyed reader Phelipe Hamoui snapped these shots of the giant iPhone display in Hong Kong running Mac OS X. This marks a nice change from that embarrassing little slip-up that revealed a U.S. display was running (gasp upon gasp!) Windows XP. So take a deep breath, Mac Army. Everything's gonna be okay. [- Thanks, Phelipe!]

What if one of them was running Linux?
What would we do then?
Should we still trust Apple?
Oh no, corporate bureaucracy has failed us again!!
DAMN!

As long as none of them is running Vista then we won't have to worry.

The AT&T displays from last year's iPhone ran XP, the Apple Store displays were powered by a Mac Pro. This year they are powered by a MacBook Pro, shown at the link below.

I used to work at Apple, and people would come into our lobby and try to touch it like it was a real iPhone. It was amusing to watch.

@NcSchu: what kinds of people run vista that are having problems with it? I abuse my OS and still have barely had ANY problems with it.

@shorty6049: I have 3 machines running vista, and fiance has a vista machine too. Never had any vista related problems what so ever. I want to believe the lies so much but i can't get around the fact it's the best OS i have ever used. And i LOVE the fact how it loads the most common apps i run into memory, so they load up super fast without using my slow ass hardrive so much.

@shorty6049: The average kind of people.
There might be lots of people having great experiences with Vista, but there's just as many having crappy experiences with it too.
I don't like the senseless bashing, but neither do like people who thinks that only because THEY had great Vista experiences, that everyone should be getting it too.

@NcSchu: Vista has been rock freaking soid. I have 3 computers w/ Vista and had a couple of blue screens which I later learned was due to a bad memory stick. Since then, no problems at all. Very happy with Vista.

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: True, but the thing we don't like is how the bashing is always so generic - yet when pressed, people can't find really significant problems that are any worse than what you find on other OSes.
If everyone is comparing OSes on a level playing field based on real experience, then the bashing is fair - but it does often feel like a lot of people are just bashing Vista because it's the 'in' thing to do and so score a few ego points.

Yeah, i know it's terrible, but i wasn't exactly trying to fool everyone into thinking it was real. I also didn't want to spend the extra 5 seconds to use perspective =) Didn't know there was a critic in the audience. Or maybe it's cause i am not on a mac. if i was this photo would fool everyone.

@TheWerewolf: For me the level playing field was my mom's laptop. She always wondered why her computer was so slow; once OSx86 was installed it got a lot faster. Unfortunately there are Windows-only programs she needs to use else she'd be sticking to OSx86.

@NcSchu:
I tested Vista back in it's earlier days and it was buggy and had issues. However, ever since they got so much flack they were working double time to get it out the door and have fixed a majority, if not all issues with the OS. I've had maybe 1 or 2 noticeable glitches in the interface but never any crashes which is amazing. It took them SP1 until they finally got it right but so far it's running rock solid for me these days. Performance wise your still taking about a 5-10% cut and a 5-10 seconds slower on file transfer speeds but overall it's honestly not that noticeable to me anymore because I have the hardware to pump out the juice for it.

you all know it's a 30" display that apple created an enclosure for right?

That would be pretty awesome, me and my friend were at the mall and we saw the person at the apple store taking down the old giant ipod nano's and we asked if we could buy one and he said no but he had asked his manager the same thing earlier cause he wanted one.

I'm pretty sure they just went for something inexpensive to run the Kiosk. They got more bang for the buck running Windows but clearly thought the bad press outweighed that factor.

@Bokusatsu_Tenshi: vistas just so bloated... it takes allot more resources to do the same things as xp... with a few addons you can make xp even better than vista with less resources... unless you have a dx10 card you shouldnt bother with vista...

@elcarbonite: what a waste of money just to play a video... you all gotta keep in mind that its probably cheaper to buy a 200$ pc... the savings add up fast when youre buying over 1000 units...

can you really blame em for using xp? i mean most companies try to keep costs down... sub 200$ xp box vs 600$ mac mini (cheapest mac you can get)...
so 400$ saved * (lets say) 1000 display units = new ferrari enzo for steve...
if its just there to play some petty video demo then why bother with the overkill?... its like those stupid yuppies and there spoiled kids who get macbooks just to putter out some office documents...

@kmkl: I'm rather surprised the initial models weren't just macs smooshed into that display/iphone enclosure some how. If you took out some of the casing and the optical drive, the guts of a Mac Mini will fit almost anywhere. I wonder what hardware was in the original, and why they would make it a winbox anyhoo. It just sits there and loops a video all day, any old OS can handle that.

@NcSchu: I think Hell would have to freeze over before Vista was being used to display an apple product. I can understand XP because of its maturity in the market and the amount of software (especially specialized software such as kiosk stuff) that is designed for it.

I work for Apple and it's actually just a 30' display (turned on it's side) connected to a MacBook Pro in the base of the stand. The loop is just a demo movie being played via QuickTime. They're heavy as shit to set up.
