G1 Pre-Sale Madness: T-Mobile Triples Production, Sells Them All
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:10 AM on October 4, 2008
According to a T-Mobile spokesperson, pre-sale demand on the Android G1 is so big that they have already sold all their units. She says that this is specially impressive because it happened after they tripled the amount of available G1 mobile phones. Of course, this could mean anything without knowing actual shipping numbers, but it seems there's plenty of interest despite its many shortcomings. If you want to pre-order yours, however, you can pre-order now through October 21 to get it at a later date:
Given the great anticipation and the heavy pre-sale demand for the T-Mobile G1 with Google, we nearly tripled the number of phones initially available for delivery on our Oct. 22 launch date, and have sold through them all. However, to accommodate additional T-Mobile customers who want to pre-order a device, they now have the opportunity to place a pre-order through Oct. 21, for delivery at a later date. Also, people can still pre-register on the T-Mobile G1 Web site to be notified prior to launch where they can purchase the device beginning Oct. 22.

I am kind of offended at this point.
I'm not sure what kind of circulation the TV ads have been getting... but I think it's a fair assumption that of these pre-orders, the overwhelming majority happen to be somewhat tech-savvy consumers. I.e. the kind of people who read blogs about gadgets. I mean, it's only logical right... everyone else either doesn't know about the G1 or still wants an iPhone.
And it's this sentence in the above post that offends me:
"but it seems there's plenty of interest despite its many shortcomings."
It's almost as if you want to imply that, you know, we're wrong for being excited about it. We, the people who read your site, are wrong. I don't think there's any other possible reaction, besides "be offended."

Hell yeah! I really hope this keeps up so if nothing else it'll keep apple on it's toes. Competition can only mean good things.
Android FTW!

@Riskbreaker927: Take solace in that it is doing so well. I think, of most sites, Gizmodo has been most prominent in taking stabs at the Android formula. Their status as a blog allows them to represent their own opinions and it's fair for them to do so.
Basically, you might be offended, but the only thing you really should do is look into another site for Android news if you're tired of the negative spins.

wtg Android. If the G1 is selling this good, just wait until a better Android phone comes along making up for all these lack of features.

@swoyekr:
exactly.
Everyone is saying, "well, it beats any of their other crap." Not that the G1 isn't good or anything, Im just saying, if it had a little competition in the carrier it might not be so impressive. I don't anticipate that many people are going to drop contracts and pay termination fees just so they can switch to the G1.

@Metkis: I've come to expect Gizmodo to treat pretty much anything that competes with Apple as crap and any steaming pile from Apple as a sacred tome.
I'm offended too, but I'm not surprised. I read other blogs for more balanced coverage, but I like to come here to "poke the bear" of apple fanboys.

Tripled the amount of phones and still sold out? smh
Apple should of tried this before letting people wait in line for days.
I bet the G1 still have a line for when it is released.

@BanMeAgainBrianLam: Well, the only bad thing about both of our statements is that I feel the respective views of the writers are separate in separate cases. I'm not afraid to suggest there is/has been a bias toward some Apple products from certain editorials or writers, but I don't feel it's a totally unfounded bias. Apple makes functional and aesthetically pleasing products. I just don't like seeing the bias leaking into other articles.
I don't see this totally happening here. The linkage to a positive article about Android, as well to a negative article about the G1 have a distinct way of balancing the article. I have always thought Jesus Diaz to be one of the most unbiased writers at Gizmodo, personally.

I think everybody here, Gizmodo included, has missed the point and completely underestimated the number of GEEKS out there willing to spring for, pre-order, and eventually stand in line for the Android prototype test phone! And the prototype it is. Look up the early video demos of Android by Andy Rubin and as much as they try to hide it, it is very obvious that it is the G1 and it has changed very little from prototype to retail.
Think about it... all the Linnux geeks out there finally get the cell phone equivalent. Hell yeah it's gonna move!

It's only for existing customers, the lowest price is only for the upgrade eligible, and the marketing was comparatively limited (maybe they will ramp it up later) so it's expected it won't be too high a number.

I imagine that with proper advertising they could sell a few tens of thousands. Probably not millions. And that's ok. Their goal with this phone is a start up an ecosystem. Think about the iPhone 1.0. Why did they only release it in the US? Why didn't they open it up to developers? It is because they needed to start somewhere and get feed back. It's a 1.0 product. Always wait for 2.0.

seems to me that the g1 hate has been mollified by blam and chen to an extent. i still have my contract w/the big V to wait out, but then i will be looking to go to either the g1, or what has been released in the interim. but i want wi-fi. i don't need an extra data plan, when the only time i would be surfing on it would be when i am out and about, and that would be more than likely at a place w/free wi-fi.
i am telling myself that this will be a part of a possibly-successful attempt to get all my stuff in one place, so i can become more organised. (fat chance, but i can hope)

The G1/Andriod will be a successful platform for the same reasons the PC trumped the Mac... It's open, and inclusive of everybody.
It doesn't have to be feature rich out the box because people will make it a million times feature rich. Just like the IBM/PC.

Seems that the Apple fanbois are fretting that people will pick something other than their beautiful iPhone. Why do they care what other people pick? It's like worrying what other people in a restaurant choose to order. You eat your meal. I'll eat mine. I don't need to trash your choice in order to feel better about my own.

@Blaxpear: But that's the whole reason I stopped using a PC once I tried Mac. Open is great until someone comes around and builds a good closed system - quality control.
Windows might technically "do" all the things I want it to do (and more than my Mac in some cases), but it does them so much worse than OSX that I have no desire to go back.
If absolute performance was the only measure of success, we would all be driving stripped down rally cars. But it's not.

Hey I own an iPhone and a Blackberry Curve (Given to me at work). I also have a Samsung Windows Mobile piece of....%&*
Am I a "fanboy" because I bought the iPhone 3G, the best mobile device available? I also own a Mac, so am I now a "fanboy?" What is a fanboy? Is it the guy that bought something you didn't? Maybe you are jealous? I dunno.
Well I am actually rooting for Android. Why? Because it is NOT Windows Mobile and open source, that's why! If Android does well, the iPhone will have more competition and benefit from that. Windows Mobile and Blackberry are last century technology, that beat the Palm, that was two centuries back!
Android will have an uphill battle against the iPhone with plain old consumers and with usability. BUT, I am rooting for it big time.

@Coffeejolts: They care what other people pick because the device was marketed to and purchased by them as a status symbol. They've been indoctrinated to think that the iphone is and always will be the best device on the market and are militant towards those who think otherwise. Their attitude towards different products is a result of the need to protect their misplaced feelings of superiority. They've been sold.

apple is the master of a technique called perceived obsolescence; making you think that your current device is obsolete because every year there's an upgrade that lets everyone else know you dont have the newest model anymore. except in this instance, apple doesn't just make people think that their old iphones are obsolete, but they apply it to everyone else's products too.

The G1 is like the Instinct...the carrier with the crappiest phones gets a phone that is half as good as an Iphone and it becomes their best selling phone.
Even with all the hybe about G1, I would bet that Tmobile still loses more customers to AT&T/Iphone then they gain from G1.

for those who really think that the g1 has sold oh, five or so phones.. the first batch of phones for the initial preorder was rumored to be about 60,000. now, that they have already tripled that, they have sold over 180,000 phones. They phone hasn't even been released and has had very little advertising. you vapid little hipster fanboys can keep your iphone and leave functionality to the g1.
