Free Boxee XBMC-Based Media Centre Now Installable On Apple TV
Posted by John Mahoney at 11:30 PM on October 1, 2008
Boxee has been turning any PC, Mac or Linux box into a capable, social-networking equipped media centre for a while in its extended alpha phase--and now, news is that it will also work on your Apple TV for a free way to go beyond the iTunes lock-in for streaming all DRM-free media. Like aTV before it (which is not free), Boxee installs on a flash drive (this time using Mac-only for now ATV USB Creator) and sports a similar interface as the original Xbox version that started it all. Sign up for the alpha: [Boxee]

So I can't seem to find this on their site, but...It's based on XBMC, can I run it on my Xbox?

I'm sure Steve Jobs is going to love this. Apple is usually fairly generous with their hardware.

@salviati: They are forks from the XBMC Linux port. I know that Plex is still pulling updates from the main project, but not sure about Boxee.

Sweet, I don't own an Apple TV though (and don't plan to)...
do they make this for FrontRow?

Is it just me, or have there been a ton of new XBMC ports recently. It seems like I've heard of 4 or five different spin-offs in the last year - some are cross-platform, and others are platform specific. Are these groups working together, or are they incompatible with each other?

@OMG! Ponies!: Then I guess the creators of RockBox are heading straight to the Grand Opening of the 11th Circle of Hell.

@Jon B.: This is an XBMC port. You can run it on any Mac already. It would be a frontrow replacement not run in conjunction with.

@domerdel: MKVs have worked in XBMC but I doubt the AppleTV will have an easy time with anything more than 720P. I guess it depends on the type of MKV file.

boxee is a replacement for Frontrow on the Mac. it plays MKVs as well as a bunch of other formats.
on Apple TV the idea is to complement the existing Frontrow, so boxee is added as another option on the menu, but you can still use your Apple TV as you did before
